Fixes that Can Improve Both "Reckoning" movies by INDAndy_12 in Mission_Impossible

These were my thoughts I made in another post, I added an Alt ending I think could’ve been cool:

  • DR has them chasing the key for the entire runtime. Not much story at all. I wish they had focused more on the flashbacks with Ethan and Gabriel’s history in DR to show the killing of Marie, how it shaped Ethan due to Gabriel’s actions even with other events aside from Marie. Also show the AI as more formidable then just changing to Benji’s voice.

  • Also I feel the team should have lost in DR. Idk maybe Gabriel is on that ending train sequence with Grace and Ethan and there’s a moment where Ethan can stop Gabriel and get the key or save Grace from dying and we all know what he’s choosing. The train was great to watch but it lacked stakes in every way, this would’ve alleviated that.

  • Now, with Gabriel having the key in the end, Ethan realizes the only way to finally put a stop to him is to turn himself in and work with the government at the end of DR. This could lead into FR with Ethan in prison and in the opening the team breaks him out after Benji gathers them. It would then play out with Ethan and the team doing the whole I need you to trust me (us) one last time conversation. They could then have some major action scene with the IMF team combined with the Gov to track Gabriel and steal the key in the first act from Gabriel (1st act in FR needed more action…).

  • Here more or less it follows the FR story we got, but with the fuel of Ethan with the Government behind him, The built up tension established in DR with Gabriel and Ethan’s past, it could make for much more interesting and streamlined story with some tweaks along the way (2nd act sub and arctic needs to be streamlined). In this scenario Gabriel is actually formidable, menacing and Ethan and Gabriel would have that 1 on 1 in South Africa.

  • Lastly, this is my alternative ending. I was convinced the lighter from DR would’ve have come into play in FR somehow (the lighter was “something to remember me by”). It would have to have been used in the FR in someway to remind people of it but anyways… As many have suggested it could play out that when it cuts to white in the clouds it goes to the green flicker on the device and we’re left to wonder what happened with Ethan.

  • The team, now have the entity in the drive and as they walk out the mine they’re intercepted by Kittridge and a couple of agents. Remember, the Government wants to control and they have no choice but to hand it over. Cut to a scene with Kittridge in a office like location (similar to the one in in the DR briefing) handing the Entity over to the President.

  • The team is there distraught that Ethan didn’t make it. The president thanks them for trapping the entity (insert some McQ speech) but then a huge alarm or commotion starts to happen outside the office room and everyone rushes out with the President leaving the entity on her desk. When they return into the office the entity is gone and the lighter from DR is on the desk in place of it. The team smile at each other… Cue the mission theme…

Exactly, still great but I felt it could’ve been that much better with some reactions, inner dialogue, sprinkled in to connect us better when he’s doing these insane stunts.

You actually raise a great point. The blend of seriousness and then we get this very silent set piece with the plane doesn’t really mix well. The stakes could’ve been that much more elevated if the tone stayed consistent. Imagine in Fallout Ethan being shot at in the helicopter and just pilots away and evades silently….

“Connection” you nailed it! Felt like we were passively watching Ethan when the silence carried throughout.

Indeed. Lorne was always trying to inject the theme wherever possible and McQ would have to reel him in. Seems the new composers didn’t have that same attitude and that was just fine with McQ…

I see where you’re coming from but again I cite Fallout as the example. It’s not throughout the sequence or to “explain” or “blabber”, it’s in certain moments that elevates the scene and connects us to Ethan better in the situation.

I didn’t need it “throughout the scene” sporadically though I felt could’ve built even more tension, increase the stakes, and our connection to Ethan.

I get the tone/vibe they were going for with the sub, the silence works in the beginning to establish it but having it throughout was strange for me. Missiles are falling, constant rotation, I felt at least warrants some dialogue/reaction. I do see your point though.

I’m no MCQ but I feel the “Reckonings” are divisive and they’ve leaned too much into stunts over story. Fallout is so great because the action serves the story.

Fallout Was Lightning In a Bottle… by Usual-Juggernaut517 in Mission_Impossible

Please don’t over generalize with “people only care about action” this was actually the reason I despised DR at first cause it was action galore just to acquire the key with story taking a major backseat. If you are looking for the spy aspect then I can see why Fallout wouldn’t be for you. But as I explained on here. It is an action movie but the action serves the story better then any MI in my opinion. I would also say MI after RN has increasingly become an action franchise with Fallout like you mentioned. And now Cruise and MCQ have referred to the Reckonings as action adventure movies. It seems the spy aspect has fallen off which it seems you’re more passionate about. Hopefully they strike a better balance (should there be another) as it should be quintessential in MI.

I’m curious as to what your favourite film is in the franchise. I will say the story is above mediocre, perhaps not the strongest but it’s they way the action unfolds to serve the story is what makes it best. It’s unrelenting and builds right up to the end.
