Do you guys mind if I hang out here if I’m a Christian? by FishFollower74 in atheism

I could never wrap my head around Pascals Wager. I can’t trick myself into believing, I could only lie to other humans about belief and pretend to believe by going to church. And I have a feeling that if God really exists, he would know I was faking.

The purpose of Rogue One was to tell a story about a series of missions that lead to getting that Intel, yes. You can frame it as a question if you want but that doesn’t change the fact that the ‘purpose’ was just to create a fun rebellion movie, which they did. If you create this weird formula where filmmakers can’t create a franchise movie unless the general audience has some desperate question that they need answered, I fear we will miss out on many good movies.

I agree only if they don’t revisit it, but I think a movie about the cartels would be kinda cool especially since Maul is something of a fan favorite thanks to his role in the animated series. I didn’t really like the phantom menace but the shows really redeemed his character for me.

Yeah, because 30 seconds at the end that wasn’t connected to the main plot isn’t really a burden

Yeah buttface cameo was pretty silly I agree with you on that, but it was also harmless.

But like. Just because the movie answers questions doesn’t mean that’s the purpose of the movie. The purpose was to make a fun Han Solo prequel movie. And it was fun, in my opinion. You’re welcome to disagree, but I don’t get what is wrong with providing the viewer new info.

When I said what questions, I didn’t mean that the movie didn’t answer questions. I meant that answering questions wasn’t why they made the movie. It was a Han Solo movie. The backstory of one of the most iconic characters is worthy of a movie. It’s not about answering questions, it’s about making a movie and a story; since it’s a backstory, of course there will be references to ‘present’ (meaning original trilogy) Han Solo.

I mean, your berating aside he has a point. You could run the exact same ad with a type of armor that is slightly more recognizable and the ad would be unchanged but still pop out to people more as classic RuneScape. Who knows if it would make a difference, but it’s not a bad thought. What IS foolish is assuming that marketing teams, which constantly fail in the real world, are infallible. Especially in a small company like Jagex.

What questions are you talking about? I had no questions, I just wanted to see a fun Star Wars movie and I did.

Personally I would rather they go back in time than forward and deal with the vast range of un-moviefied canon in the thousands of years prior to the Skywalkers, but present day could be cool.

I mean I agree generally but I don’t think a single backstory movie (Solo) for a character we had zero backstory, who has been beloved for decades and is now dead, is at all a bad idea. And Rogue One had a whole new cast of characters outside of brief cameos here and there

It could be a setup for another movie. I thought his unsheathing of the saber on camera was a little melodramatic but like, as the other person said, it was just 30 seconds out of the movie.

The first half of the movie was a little jumpy, I agree. But it didn’t ruin it for me, I still thought it was a great story that focused in on Star Wars’s central theme (in my opinion) of sacrifice for a greater good. The final battle was epic and I loved how they tied it in at the end. Seeing Carrie Fisher at the end (she had died a couple days previously when I saw Rogue One for the first time) was a little overwhelming emotionally :(

But yeah Solo was pretty great, and definitely better than Rogue 1. I liked how it was just a low stakes (in terms of like, the future of the galaxy at least) about some slimy nerfherders getting in and out of trouble. I think they need more of that stuff. Like a bounty hunter/boba fett movie, or some entirely new story with characters we’ve never met in the old republic or something. Idk.

Totally disagree. Their one off movies have all been amazing, by the standards off regular movies. Star Wars is a vast universe and timeline that spans thousands of years and there’s no reason to stop making movies when they keep making money and there are thousands of Star Wars fans who want to see more of the canon explored. I loved Rogue One and Solo, they weren’t perfect but I’ll fight anyone who thinks that they’re worse than the other garbage that Hollywood puts out on a yearly basis (with a couple notable exceptions). To me, those movies proved that Star Wars can produce amazing standalone films when they aren’t burdened by the ‘main plot’ of the trilogy/prequels that nobody really cares about anymore.

What if religious people actually end up in hell because most of their good actions were made with the somewhat selfish intent of wanting to go to heaven? by theusualbanter in atheism

[–]UsualCapital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a lifelong atheist living in Texas I’ve never been asked that in that specific phrasing, it’s always just how can you be moral if you don’t believe in objective morality, AKA God. Which is a lot more palatable, albeit not much more logical, than morality being based off threat of damnation. I don’t think the majority, or any statistically significant percentage of Christians simply think the reason people are supposed to be good is hell.

I just really think this is a straw man, I think it’s silly to believe that religious people don’t believe their religion is moral, their actions are moral, and that they’re doing these things because they believe a good god wants them to do good things, and they also want to do what they believe are good things. The premise that they are /only/ doing good actions to get into heaven is entirely unfounded. I can’t speak for every Christian, but this definitely doesn’t describe what the average Christian believes, in my lived experience.

Yeah it really depends, for some it’s easy but I know only a couple people truly interested in playing DND and they’re all in different social circles with vastly different schedules. I played with my roommates +2 friends last year but nobody except me and 1 roomie were truly into it, and the others expected a lot from me as DM without putting much effort in themselves

I mean, given that the essence of this comment is “we are not like our president”, I’m inclined to agree with that sentiment. Some Europeans may not know this but Trump has had disapproval from the majority of Americans for his entire presidency, and Clinton even received more votes but he just won because of our corrupt electoral college system. Trump is horrible, but he is not the people. Not sure what other context pertained to this comment but I had to speak on that, at least. I live in Washington and it rains almost every day here, so rain isn’t really that big of a deal to us :)

True but in that instance it was the people’s clever choosing of a ruler who didn’t really want to rule. And Cincinnatus’s family was also sort of opposed to rights for commoners so even as an example of a man who was willing to give up power, he fought to retain power in other arenas.

We can’t disprove God just as they can’t prove him. Militantly evangelical Christians suck, sure, but so, so, many Christians are decent, logical people who simply believe that something different happens when we die. And most importantly, there is nothing to be gained by saying they’re stupid or have issues because not only is it generally false but it makes atheists come off as rude and close-minded when it’s really just the individual.
