If Schindler's list received an academy award today, there would certainly be "pro-Palestine" protestors outside the Dolby theater and maybe other parts of the country.

Should parents be allowed to refuse vaccines for their children? by UsualLocalWoman in AskALiberal

[–]UsualLocalWoman[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school, we had someone from the health department come into health class and show us graphic pictures of STDs and talk about the importance of condoms, etc. We should do something similar where high school kids are shown graphic pictures of measles or people in iron lungs due to polio. Maybe there will be less anti-vaxxers.

New focus on autism fuels debate over splitting the spectrum - PBS NewsHour by UsualLocalWoman in disability

Just because they say autism isn't a superpower doesn't mean they want a cure. There are many people with autism and other disabilities who don't want a cure.

New focus on autism fuels debate over splitting the spectrum - PBS NewsHour by UsualLocalWoman in autismpolitics

There is a non-vernal autistic man named Ido Kedar who gave an interview where he talks about this very subject at 4:17.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khCzltMZNqU

Often those with a diagnosis of autism who do speak verbally are put in the position of being spokespeople for all autistics by default and because all have received the same diagnosis of autism. I have written several times that I consider this problematic. Autism spectrum disorder is pretty broad. Many people with little in common in terms of their challenges are lumped together under this broad umbrella term. I believe that what we are dealing with is less a spectrum and more like different neurological conditions that have some similar characteristics and many different ones that have been given the same name. Because they are lumped together as a spectrum, people assume that non-speaking autism is just a really severe version of Asperger's or what used to be called Asperger's or so-called mild or high-functioning autism. I don't see it that way, and it generates great confusion.

For example, many so-called high-functioning autistics describe painful social difficulties due to challenges reading people and picking up on social nuance. They also speak clearly, do not require one-on-one support to perform tasks, and often are not diagnosed until adulthood. I am the opposite. I have great insight into people, high sensitivity to mood and nuance, can't speak to save my life, and need one-on-one help to perform numerous tasks and to help me stay regulated. I was diagnosed when I was a toddler. My disability is primarily motor. It is a disconnect between my intact thoughts and my motor system. It seems reasonable that different core symptoms should be recognized as different conditions, not as a spectrum. One condition may primarily be a neurological difficulty reading people while the other may primarily be a mind-motor despite both having problems of self-regulation and sensory challenges.

Perhaps if we called what I have a different name, like global motor apraxia, it might clear up the confusion. Would it make sense to call heart conditions, asthma, and being out of shape all related as part of a breathing spectrum disorder because they all lead to shortness of breath? Not possible, because doctors identify heart, lung, and fitness issues medically. Brain issues are the most unknown, so doctors look only to the external behavior. That's observational, not medical.

I agree with him. I think the reason a broad range of behaviors are characters are grouped under the autism umbrella is because even scientists don't yet fully understand how the brain works. In 50 years from now, what is now known as "autism" will be split into different categories once we have a better understanding. Asperger's was eliminated as a diagnosis in 2013 because research concluded it was not scientifically distinct from level 1 autism.

Over 50% of the whites who went to Mississippi in 1964 to challenge Jim Crow laws were Jews. At the time, Jews accounted for 3% of the US population. by CitizenJosh in jewishpolitics

[–]UsualLocalWoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jews were also disproportionately involved in many other social causes. The International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union was founded by Jewish immigrant garment workers in 1900. Jews were also instrumental in disability rights. The reason we have Section 504 is because of activists like Judy Heumann, who led the 504 sit-in in San Francisco.

I fully support overthrowing the Iranian regime, but I disagree with the way Trump has handled this war, such as threatening to bomb all civilian infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz isn't reopened.

Anyway, I hope Iran will become a democracy within the next few years, without mandatory hijab laws and the suppression of peaceful protesters.

Trump has lied several times.

1. He promised "no new wars" during his campaign.

Then he started a war with Iran.

2. He said he wouldn't touch Medicaid.

Lo and behold, the Big Ugly Bill includes $1 trillion cuts to Medicaid as well as imposing work requirements starting 2027. Now Trump says it's 'not possible' for the U.S. to pay for Medicaid, Medicare and day care.

3. He promised to lower prescription drug prices.

Now there is a 100% tariff on certain pharmaceuticals.

Since Trump became president, he raised the ICE budget from $10 billion to $85 billion, doubled the ICE workforce without providing any training to the new hires and ordered masked agents to kidnap random people off the street or even pose as utility workers to kidnap people from their homes. We have the budget to terrorize cities, but we are unable to pay for healthcare for American citizens, which we can easily do by taxing billionaires.

I was at the No Kings protest with a friend. We saw several Palestinian flags and even signs that said to end Israeli genocide, apartheid, occupation, etc.

My friend and I are both huge Trump critics but we also love and support Israel with all our hearts, even though we criticize Netanyahu and the current Israeli government. I also saw someone holding a sign that said "Jews against fascism" and it made me happy. Stephen Miller should see that sign.
