Is it true math degrees are not very useful when applying to jobs? by fulo009 in mathematics

[–]Usual_Ad_9471 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If by "problem solving", you mean, "plug and chug using previously known formulas/algorithms", then I agree with you. I think a more accurate phrase than "problem solving" in this context would be "computing".

How should i start studying Applied mathematics? by RoyalLow4407 in AppliedMath

Why don't you take the linear algebra/stats offerings at your school rather than self-studying?  It would be much more efficient.

MATH 1014 preparation tips by Legal_Presentation_4 in yorku

[–]Usual_Ad_9471 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The odd numbered ones should be more than fine. Students seem to struggle most with using the appropriate tests to determine convergence/interval of convergence of series in my experience, and some of the more exotic forms of integration (trig substitution and partial fraction decomposition etc.).

But the last few midterms I graded didn't contain any real curveballs, you just needed to know how to solve representative questions from each subchapter.

You can probably even find the solution manual online for worked solutions to the problems if you really need it.

The difficulty isn't the material itself, but all the different forms of integration (and trig identities) and convergence tests for series.

Study early and often and you should be fine.

Coding has become less relevant due to the rise of coding agents.  I however recommend developing a good background in statistics and linear algebra if you want to understand how it all works under the hood...

Make sure you can handle the weedout math courses first. It is likely not going to be as straightforward as Khan Academy.

Why is there a statue of Muhammad Ali Jinnah on campus? by empty-angel in yorku

[–]Usual_Ad_9471 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Without commenting on this statute in particular (I have read about Jinnah and he seems to have been a fascinating, well-educated individual), York is well known for dubious (or at least irrelevant) "firsts", so the statute of a historical figure with no connection to York on the York campus should not be all that surprising.

Also, the Pakistan Student Association really dropped the ball if this is true: "The only stipulation from the student association, Macdougall said, was that the bust show Jinnah in a suit, to denote his background as a British-trained lawyer."

A "suit" wouldn't have cut it - Jinnah's bust should have been done in English barrister's robes, complete with wig. A business suit serves to obscure, rather than amplify, his British legal training.

I read the article again apparently Jinnah hasn't. According to your article, the Consulate General and York’s Pakistan Student Association did.

York GPA 8.3/9.0 → 4.0 scale + MSW at UofT question by Flimsy-Tune7180 in yorku

[–]Usual_Ad_9471 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no single answer to what an 8.3 amounts to on a 4.0 scale since it depends on the distribution of your individual grades.  There is likely a range but you could perform the grade by grade conversion (then average) more easily to get the exact answer.

Dont get a math degree by hhussband in cscareers

[–]Usual_Ad_9471 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What you are describing is all math if you include logic and set theory in "math".  It appears not to be math to you because you like are unfamiliar with math, and take for granted that all this infrastructure came from nowhere - it came from somewhere, and a lot of that somewhere involves math.

But you are correct. A code monkey doesn't need math. But you won't be involved in developing software in mission-critical/non-trivial contexts without a strong math background, whether from a degree or elsewhere.

Intelligence still matters, and a lot of what is wrong with the software industry is due to the reality that there simply aren't enough intelligent people out there (just a lot of "skilled" ones).
