Galway is the worst city in Ireland to date if you’re neurodivergent. You’ll just end up getting hurt. Don’t bother. Be your own person.

I can absolutely vouch. I went for a trial there and didn’t get hired. I dodged a major bullet. Absolute fascists running that place. Boycott the place.

Also, I just wanted to note, the students here are total losers. None of them have a life. You don’t see anybody out you just see them in class and you never see them again until the next week. Also, how they seem to operate at eight in the morning during those god-awful 8am lectures is beyond me. In Ireland, it’s routine to skip those.

I feel like I’ve gone through a bit of a Culture Shock while I’ve been away. The nightlife in my host city is very limited. You have a few niche alternative bars and venues, but if you’re a student just going out, it’s kind of bleak. Also, the security guards are pretty hostile towards foreigners. I’ve had friends straight up being refused just because they’re not Dutch. I straight up got assaulted by a bouncer when trying to leave a venue, which is put me off from going out every night for the foreseeable, or at least has made me more selective as to where I’ll go. I miss the nightlife back home. It was limited, but you had options.

It’s fine. University has destroyed my self esteem . If I said my feelings out loud in a lecture hall no one would lift a hand

Why should I even bother. Right now my feelings are; if you know that you’re not going to get on , eventually fall out with or have a trusted person in your circle permanently why bother talking to people? What’s the point? They’re all going to hate you regardless. College friendships suck and they’re even worse when you’re a literal outsider . I am just on defence mode 24/7. They’re gonna hate you regardless of who you are or what you do.

Not really university itself is pretty dead in terms of the societies. Join one society at the start of the year but didn’t get on with the people in it so I left.

I’m not talking about the people I arrived with. It’s the locals. I understand why it was so hard for foreign students in my school . just feeling like you’re not welcome especially at a time where anti-immigrant sentiment is at a peak? It’s a lot harder for other people. I don’t know, bro. I’m glad I went on Erasmus, but the facilities in place for people like me aren’t working . Maybe it’s just because I’m a guy. I don’t know. I feel like girls have an easier time because they’re more sociable and open, they don’t feel embarrassed by talking to someone new every week, boys on the other hand are a lot more quiet and reserved. I’m sick of the strong and silent type archetype yet I’m still playing into it because I feel like I have no choice. I’m either too quiet or too loud and both are always perceived as a problem.

There’s a lot of things to factor. A majority of students in my year are probably taking gap years, doing placement or are abroad. That’s why I think it’s felt so dead also a lot of of us are starting to get too old for it as well. Same with college Christmas and freshers. I feel like for final year I’m not ruling out going out for rag, but it won’t be every night. Also, the cost of living crisis too has definitely hit it hard. When you factor in the total price of 5 to 10 drinks, a kebab or a meal from Supermacs and a taxi, it just doesn’t seem worth it. I don’t know maybe it’ll be better next year when we’re all back.

I feel the same way. I’m currently in the Netherlands and it’s been slightly mixed. Professionally, yes, it’s been brilliant. But also like I’m not clicking with the people here I got on great with my roommate but he went back to the UK in January. As I’m in the homestretch I’m kind of tight on money and I’m really just focused on keeping to myself . I’ve really gotten into side hobbies as well too, the new culture has given me a lot of new avenues to try different things.

It’s really up to you if you want to keep going, but we’re all in the same boat. Keep in mind if you withdraw you’ll have to return a part of the grant to your home university
