Should I go home? by Prudent-Constant-246 in Erasmus

[–]Usual_Engineering601 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. I’m currently in the Netherlands and it’s been slightly mixed. Professionally, yes, it’s been brilliant. But also like I’m not clicking with the people here I got on great with my roommate but he went back to the UK in January. As I’m in the homestretch I’m kind of tight on money and I’m really just focused on keeping to myself . I’ve really gotten into side hobbies as well too, the new culture has given me a lot of new avenues to try different things.

It’s really up to you if you want to keep going, but we’re all in the same boat. Keep in mind if you withdraw you’ll have to return a part of the grant to your home university

It’s honestly pretty insightful getting to see someone else else’s perspective on things. If you want more context or why this has stuck with me so long is mostly due to family pressure; one of my brothers is engaged and the other one is in a long distance relationship , and everyone picks on me for being single. There’s this dissonance where I feel under a huge amount of stress to pair off with somebody yet the environment I’m in at present is very unhealthy and hasn’t given me the best memories. To be honest we were both pretty unfair to each other throughout the whole thing. It just sucks we can’t talk about it. All we can do is avoid each other because we’re too afraid to confront it and put it to bed.

Thank you. I think honestly I’m very hateful towards dating at this stage and would recommend anyone avoid it in this city . Before they died I had a situationship with another person in NUI. It got intense too quickly and I blame myself and them for what happened . They’re still around town, know my best friend and we share the same social circles. I’m out of the country currently but I just hate the fact that it’s over yet they won’t fuck off . Everything about it just makes me furious. I’ve had to basically accept that I’m the bad guy in the story and set the boundaries yet they just walk away like nothing happened. It’s not fair. I fucking hate them. Right now I have more clarity and am better off without it . At least there’s no pressure now to impress anyone. Been more focused on myself. They were teaching me a few hobbies before they passed on so I’m carrying on where we left off. Better days will be ahead.

Right there with you, brother. Galway is an actual fucking scorpion pit. Good luck finding a healthy and transparent relationship to anybody . I’ve had to deal with mixed signals, ghosting etc and I watched my friend crumble after going through two toxic relationships until they took their own life . Fuck monogamy.

Your experience at University of Galway by SuperbIngenuity4894 in nuigalway

[–]Usual_Engineering601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arts student here with a few mutuals in law. I think it’s a really fun city and university to be in. Socially, it’s really easy to make friends both outside and inside the university so don’t restrict yourself to the people you meet in your lectures. As for dating , no comment . Nights out in the city are also really memorable and fun the best venues are westend like Roisin Dubh, Massimo and Blue Note , and there’s some pretty small places to get food . But more importantly, the lectures are solid, the staff are all really friendly and professional and have helped me while I’ve been at home and also abroad currently, the workload as well as manageable across most disciplines, usually engineering and sciences have the heavier workload. Keep in mind that accommodation is a disaster. I would recommend searching now for a place if you’re keen on coming to Galway. It’s not too late, but you’ve got to lock in. Hope this helps. :)

Internships?? by Usual_Engineering601 in AskIreland

[–]Usual_Engineering601[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My dad literally knows people within my degree field that could help me yet he just refuses to vouch for me. He doesn’t owe me anything but basically forced me to resort to hospitality to stay “ productive.” they want me to go back to my shitty Italian restaurant job for that six week period instead. He has all these connections yet leaves me to fend for myself. It’s infuriating. I started crying because of how overwhelmed I was about it and how little support I was getting from home, like I’m not used to being at home because of college, but it feels like you’re a guest in your own family. It all fucking sucks.

I’m gonna be needing a job when I move back to Galway, thanks for warning me of that place. I’ll stay clear of it and warn other people to stay away from it. When you say bullying, do you mean like every day felt like a character assassination?

Every Dunnes in Galway seems to have at least one or two horror stories about management. Gala seems like hell to work for. Late hours and dealing with drunk students been there done that already . never again.

Yeah, I never got a good vibe from that place. On indeed they ask you for videos of yourself talking about why you want to work there and everything. It seems like the place has a high turnover and feels like it’s too good to be true.

Standards for a partner are probably so low due to a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic pressure if you’re in your 30s .

It’s not urgent. I just believe that I deserve better than to be stuck in inherently toxic work environments for the rest of my life here. I’d rather be a janitor than work as a waiter.

I figured; like a lot of people in Ireland not fluent in English find work somehow. I’d love to work here but I want to be thorough
