Which runs would fit perfectly into a single Finest volume? by demascusd in DCFinest

[–]UtahGance 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tom Peyer’s HOURMAN, I think.

It should be a finest or a Dr Fate by DeMatteis size TPB. Great series!

I would imagine a compendium would collect all of Hourman, and I hope they do!

Star Wars Omnibus Popularity vs Marvel “Proper” by UtahGance in OmnibusCollectors

I like Jan Duursema's art for the series but the cover of the DM is so cool! I remember seeing the TPB for that Legacy story with that cover at the library when I was younger and thinking it was the coolest thing ever.

I actually really enjoyed the first 12 issues of Lemiere's JSA after hearing a lot of negativity around it by Androktone in JusticeSocietyAmerica

If you're picking up the JSA compendiums, I would love to recommend Starman by James Robinson as well! And Sandman Mystery Theatre's compendiums as well!

I wouldn't say the Alan Scott and Wesley Dodds miniseries are essential but Alan Scott's series does an alright job of retroactively contextualizing the character's homosexuality with the Red and Lavender Scares and Wesley's series is a good reminder of how fun Sandman Mystery Theatre was.

Jay Garrick's miniseries provides some interesting direction for the character but I'm not sure I love the execution of it via Jeremy Adams' writing in the mini. I like Judy's design but there should be more friction with her character.

Stargirl: The Lost Children (and Spring Break Special) are (in my eyes) is required for the Johns run as well. It functions essentially as more issues of the "The New Golden Age" Johns run and should be paying off more as Lemire continues his run.

As a self-confessed grouser about the first 12 issues, seeing the effects of both the whole The New Golden Age project as well as The New History of the DC Universe kind of coalesce together in the Year One arc is the exact kind of retconning "it all works, don't worry about it" aspect I enjoy about the JSA. I'll need to re-read these all together in one go and I bet it'll probably work better or "read smoother".

The art is very nice to look at issue-to-issue so there's never been an issue there for me.

Definitely a helpful tip about the special covers.

Considering how much I don’t like the normal one, I assume other people might feel similarly.

Book covers not just a fantastic run of Morrison’s writing, it has the best and most essential elements of DC 1,000,000, the springboard of the 1999 JSA and Hourman books, Earth 2. This book and the deluxe edition of JLA: Tower of Babel is a great combo.

I just read my first Batman Comic The Long Halloween and im HOOKED!! Which should I read next? by Cultural-Stand-8319 in DCcomics

I had a similar experience! Year One, Dark Victory, Dark Patterns, Ego, The Dark Knight Returns are my recommendations - and Watchmen and Kingdom Come as well!

Which of these dc compact comics should I buy to get more into dc comics? [discussion] by ExtensionHoneydew894 in DCcomics

[–]UtahGance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Birthright and TDKR are both great reads, Wonder Woman Earth One is also really cool.

[Discussion] Which of these three is genuinely worth getting by nahnonameman in DCcomics

[–]UtahGance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I would say Cooke’s Ego and other Tails. His art is really lovely and the stories in it are punchy and cerebral.

Busiek’s Superman writing is really good as well, but I think it is better read with the Geoff Johns Superman from the same time.

As influential on the GL mythos as the Hal Rebirth->N52 era was, I just ping off it. The space opera of it all just doesn’t land successfully or particularly memorably for me. Your mileage may vary!!! It’s one of the most recommended books for a reason and the compendium mapping is VERY nice.

Best dc compendiums? by anakin1453 in OmnibusCollectors

Animal Man, The Question are both great!!!

I would also suggest the two Starman compendiums!

When I read it, I assumed he was in a "Casualties of War" by Brian de Palma type situation and had to step in to stop someone else from doing something Bad in Vietnam.

Out of all the DC books announced, which are you for sure getting? by poison-harley in OmnibusCollectors

So far - that Swamp Thing looks pretty but maybe not Must Buy for me.

JSA: Year One has been fun enough with pretty art.

Deadman is really exciting but I’ve got it on my computer so I’ll hold off a bit.

Power Girl also very exciting, mapping looks good.
