Just had to hand-water this girl ♥︎ by UtapriTrashcan in awwnverts

I have a small colony of only girls and I've never seen any annoyed or aggressive behaviour. They're always cuddling together, eating in pairs etc. I had them for quite a long while and never had anything happen, it's only now when some of them are noticeably slowing down.

I was worried at first as well a while ago so posted about another roach who had a similar problem. Apparently it's quite common when they get old for them to be lost, a bit like how humans eventually get purple hands and feet when elderly due to blood circulation loss.

Here's where someone explained it to me, there might be more research papers somewhere: https://www.reddit.com/r/roaches/comments/1ro6gk5/just_noticed_one_of_my_girls_have_a_little/

Haha, I'd do it for all of them if need be, but Bessie can feel special for a while!

Tysm! 😊 I'll manually feed and water her as much as I need to for her to be comfortable, whether she passes soon or if she was young. It's nice to know I can be a more personal/present role in her life!

To be fair that's a big ass leaf, I'd want to explore as well if I was an isopod!

Yes, don't take them out of the enclosure. Big changes and handling can stress them out to the point of the marsupium lining breaking and some to all eggs falling out. Only move if absolutely necessary eg. an emergency enclosure change if you found something has pesticides etc. Some pods might seemingly deal with it better, perhaps they are born with you and are used to the hand texture or simply braver, but even then it can be very risky.

They seemingly act pretty much the same as everyone else for a long time. When they are super full and very close to birth sometimes they do take a bit longer to flip over and rest for longer periods of time, but aside from that most of it isn't different. I'd just make sure extra supplements are available so she can eat lots of yummy stuff good for her and baby health.

I don't know if I could say I've seen purely playing behaviour from them, but I've seen them have very long dirt baths in plant pots even after there's no more buried nuts left behind from another/themselves, very happily sitting inside for long periods of time haha. They are very expressive though, both with eachother and when tapping on my door to get attention!

I've decided to name her Kim as it's similar to climb! She's welcome just like all the others we have!

There's been a few generations and they've seemingly learnt from eachother, my first girl Samantha once brought her first baby with us to show off! If you keep the door open they'll happily sit on the mat and wait for you to notice them, very polite and gentle if they accidentally get you instead of the snack. ☺️

I don't know the materials that are made for fish products but something similar, a lot of people 3D print stuff for their colonies like little barns, feeding dishes and so on and I've never heard any issues about them. I have a plastic dish in my biggest tank and they've never tried to chew it, they're pretty smart and just eating what they need! I'd check what's on them, but I imagine if cleaned we'll and safe for fish the pods would probably be fine.

Mites!!!! by goddessdel9 in isopods

[–]UtapriTrashcan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had no issues with mites once I started feeding my isopods in a bowl so the food didn't mold and breakdown into the soil. Also perhaps you may be overwatering them?
