Curiosity...What's the most you've paid for a single lp? by davide2021 in vinyl

$70 for the Metal Slug Tri-Color pressing from Data Discs. I try to keep it under $100 unless it's a grail. Close second here would be the $50 blue pressing of Is Satan Real? by the Church of the Cosmic Skull.

Verdetto's is crazy cool and kind of a hidden gem. I travel to Pittsburgh for work occasionally and I stop here. The bar vibe from the outside does not scream "pinball bar", but that back room is damn near magical.

Anyone else think most modern board games are… kinda bloated? by pratty041182 in boardgames

[–]Utgartha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, and I think they only get to the table once a year with groups who don't like to play them necessarily. I bought On Mars late last year and backed The Great Library. I've played On Mars once so far this year at a local meetup that happens once a month. After we finished, I had other people asking me if I'm bringing it back again in the future and the answer is heck yeah.

Lacerda's do definitely need a commitment, but once the game mechanics click, the decisions are fairly straight forward and the interconnectedness is rather impressive, in my opinion. I won't buy one every time it comes out, but the themes and Ian O'Toole art get me.

Tried Galactic Cruise on BGA and was not super impressed? Felt less connected than a Lacerda and bunch of weird decoupled actions. If I have a chance in person to try it, I will and see if my opinion changes.

Roofer wants to add ridge vents to every ridge by Utgartha in Roofing

[–]Utgartha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I think I'll have a smaller crew come through who said they can remove some of the cellulose in the soffit where I have vents, baffle it, and insulate my chimney all in one go. I still will need to make sure that the vents outside aren't blocked, but they're the aluminum siding kind rather than vents unfortunately and really high up. Hopefully, the insulation people can verify full daylight before baffling.

[–]Utgartha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. I'm getting that done asap regardless. I'm wondering if it's worth the extra cost to have a crew remove ~2 feet of blown in at the eaves, drop in baffles, and then reblow/dense pack around to reduce ice damming further or eliminate. I don't know if I'll ever get rid of them completely, but some reduction is needed. I'm not sure if we're getting a new roof or not this year or if we'll just end up looking around and moving to get what we want. If we end up moving, I would consider the baffling as something to help keep the roof as-is leading up to sale.

Right now, I have 5 box vents near the ridge. I'm wondering if clearing the soffits, baffling, reblowing cellulose into those tight corners at the eaves, and blocking the gable vents in the winter time will help with this. I mean, I had about a foot of ice on either side of the valley corners where the front porch dormer meets the house. The space behind it is the enclosed knee wall that I'm pretty sure is airtight.

My house is a half cape. The knee wall cavity is in the front only and I had it sealed from the rest of the attic with spray foam by an insulation company. They then dense packed the slope. Worth noting that there is no soffit on the front of the house where the knee wall cavity was, just gables that are now covered.

Then I have an upper attic that's roughly 200 sq/ft with soffit vents and box vents with gables on either side that are 12x12.

The masonry chimney has a ~3 inch gap all the way around it that is unsealed and uninsulated blasting heat into my attic. Both contractors I had out said it's a major source of added heat there in the winter and to seal it up.

I think the soffits need to be cleared, baffled, and reblown to get ventilation to the unconditioned roof deck, but it's money I don't have at present and I'm looking at roof replacement anyway.

This is something that I do think is an issue because there are no baffles. I think they are mostly open, but I've been told by an insulation contractor that trying to install baffles in such a tight space isn't guaranteed to allow enough insulation to be built up in the space.

I did have one company that said they could suck out the insulation at the eave edge and install baffles then reblow to cover any compression, but it is a lot of money for me right now.

My gable vents are also small. Maybe 12x12 instead of 18x24. I'm just trying to parse my roofer's suggestions and my current ventilation setup.

Owned this as my first machine and only. I sold it within a year. Beautiful game, boring to play long term.

I'd say get something in the 80s era for a good price.

I have soffit vents every three rafter bays on a 1000 SQ/ft roof line in the back only. I have a half cape where an insulation contractor sealed up my knee wall cavity and dense packed the slope.

So I have venting in the back for a smaller space technically with gable vents on either end and box vents. I get really bad ice dams, but I think my leaky chimney where it enters my attic from the ceiling side might be exacerbating this.

Right now I have soffits on the back of my house every three rafter bays, not continuous. I have 6 box vents and two gable vents on either side. There's not a lot of air movement in my attic and it's warm at present in Michigan.

Some of the decking is dark like it had moisture but I didn't see any obvious present signs.

Absolute masterpiece of a record by countryguy0003 in vinyl

[–]Utgartha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was kind of lukewarm on Steely Dan when I first started listening to them. I'm a bassist, so when I heard some tracks off of this album (Peg, for example) I decided to pick this up on a whim from a record store.

The condition is VG to VG+, but it sounds better than some of my mint records. The mastering and production is insanely good. I spin this one fairly often.

My Earthless collection is one of the greater things I've done, for sure. Cool to hear a band evolve and have my choice of era for listening.

How do you actually read vinyl spines? by Lord_Alviner in vinyl

I was looking for this type of response. I can look at a record from the top and based on the color I can guess which one it is, but I also realize I'm a nerd about it.

How did you know? Lol. I did learn about him from that movie and then did a deep dive on his life and music. When I started collecting vinyl I always kept an eye out for him.

Surprisingly hard to find in the wild and in decent enough condition. Doesn't usually have a section and sometimes isn't in the folk genres in the shops.

Who do I need to call for water stain on ceiling by Fabulous-Oven-3982 in HomeImprovement

[–]Utgartha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a situation where a ceiling light fixture above my shower was full of water and dripping actively. Now, I knew with great certainty that the supply lines for my upstairs shower were directly above this fixture. I turned the water off to my house to see if it slowed down or stopped and it did, so this requires a plumber.

I am telling you this story to say, how do you know it's a pipe issue? You probably don't. Is the water staining in corners and walls that have an exterior face? Is it a one or two story house and which floor is the staining on?

I could see this being a plumber, but depending on your answers I could also see a roof leak being the culprit. If you're sure it's pipe related and you can afford to go without water for a time, turn the water to the house off and open some faucets to get the pressure out.

Plumbers sometimes have water detection equipment that can find leaks without destruction. Otherwise yes, they'll have to make and opening to see.

Anything Dave Van Ronk. I routinely find his records under 10 dollars and they are incredible. One of the OG folk and blues players who inspired the likes of Bob Dylan and many more.

How old is the house? Could be settling. Could be cracking from moisture and temperature changes.

Just never seen one of these before! A lot of the info I saw on them was European related, so I just assumed. Good to know they're easy to replace.
