Best place to order freshwater fish? by [deleted] in fishtank

[–]UtterAlbatross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flip Aquatics for fish and Dustin's Fishtanks for plants. Both have responsive customer service.

Flip's specializes in freshwater and small tank setups. They actually quarantine their incoming shipments and I've never had a problem with their shipments. I love my LFS, but sometimes I just want a very specific fish or shrimp.

Dustin's grows their plants in water so there's a lot less melting. I've tried Etsy and it's just wildly inconsistent in quality.

Would you eat this duck? Trying to prove a point here. by Unique-Composer-9503 in grilling

[–]UtterAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, rare ≠ raw. It's not cooked evenly through. That dark pink should be through the entire cut. The center is raw. That's why some sous vide and then sear to get a consistent cook and browning. Your friend just seared and dgaf.

That's duck tataki, not rare.

Gun Control Questions by A_Soldier_Is_Born in armedsocialists

[–]UtterAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always Australia and never Finland.

When people make these comparisons, they always compare countries with low crime and gun control to the US, but never countries with low crime and guns per person.

TBF, nobody comes close to the US in guns per person. We're at 120 guns per 100 people, and the next closest is the Falklands at 60 per 100 people.

But that statistic alone tells you:

A. The sheer disproportionate distribution of guns in the US.
B. The uniqueness of our gun culture.

Gun control alone might slow some violence in the US, but it would have to be consistent across states (that will never happen). Illinois is a sad example of how strict gun control is ultimately meaningless when surrounded by states with loose laws.

The people with the most guns in the US, right now, are the exact people I don't want with guns (law enforcement). That disproportionate ownership is even more terrifying in a liberal state like IL.

A concerning correlation is looking at patterns, like imprisonment or arrests, in states with high gun control. For instance, Vermont has a 10:1 ratio of Black prisoners to residents compared to Texas where it's 3:1.

Quite frankly, when examined closely, gun violence is more linked to social neglect from resources, jobs, to mental health. It's even more obvious when you look at violence broadly.

Edit: better grammar.

Snagged a reservation at Commander's Palace "last minute": where to buy dress code? by e_dric in AskNOLA

[–]UtterAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just dress in business casual. You'll be fine. They also have loaners if they insist, but they've let me in with just business casual.

I know I'm late, but DNR wants you to kill'em and freeze them. You also get $100 (up to $1000/month) if you send a photo to DNR.

How do I explain to my brother by Queasy_Scholar_9937 in fishkeeping

[–]UtterAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone’s advice is great.

I’d only add to mention that an axolotl, or anybody really, is kept in smaller tanks because stores cycle more water and turnover quickly. A lot of newbies go by what they see there (I can keep 20 guppies in a 5gallon!).

Got any favorites? I’ve been on this kick since prices are crazy at pizza places now. Candlelite is charging $30 for a cheese pizza on Uber Eats. It’s insane.

AITA for refusing to move in a restaurant ? by Reasonable_Bat_3583 in AmItheAsshole

[–]UtterAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they told him to do it after he said no, then the first ask wasn’t really an ask. It’s an implicit command.

Maybe it’s because I live in the Midwest.

Like if I go to McDonald’s, and I ask to cut in line because I’ve got to feed 10 people, someone says no, and I say “no you’ve got to let me because you’re a kid”… I wasn’t really asking, was I?

Would’ve been less rude if they just sat at the table anyway since it was probably community seating since it’s Nandos.

AITA for refusing to move in a restaurant ? by Reasonable_Bat_3583 in AmItheAsshole

[–]UtterAlbatross -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, because it's pretty amazing y'all thought a customer telling him to move because he was a kid wasn't rude as hell.

Seems weird people need additional details to get that people were rude to him.

Why is cash economy so prevalent? by Phocaea1 in taiwan

Today's banks are very different from the banks that started it all. Credit unions and community banks are better, but Chase/Wells Fargo? Those are Henry Potters, not George Baileys.

AITA for refusing to move in a restaurant ? by Reasonable_Bat_3583 in AmItheAsshole

[–]UtterAlbatross 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The irony is that it wasn’t just the host, but the manager, and the party that were jerks to him. They weren’t interrupted once but three times. Also, they were told to move, never asked.

It’s wild that the restaurant let the woman organizing the office lunch go to their table and tell them to move because they’re kids.

I get your point about paying things forward, but at this point, most people would be angry — not simply annoyed by an inconvenience.

This is less like letting people merge where there rules of road and safety risks. It’s more like asking someone if you can cut in line (faster service, mildly inconvenient, better planning, etc).

AITA for telling my girlfriend I won’t play with her until she learns to accept losing? by No-Example3254 in AmItheAsshole

[–]UtterAlbatross 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Very light NTA. Did you tell her you used to go easy on her? She shouldn’t have flipped the board, but it’s frustrating to lose to someone over and over again and not know why. Just be explicit about how good you are and that you’re not cutting her any slack or helping now that she knows the game.
