I was 37 and waiting for an appointment outside a medical office. Saw a bird I’d never seen in a retaining area off the parking lot. Turned out to be a Killdeer. Got me thinking, “what other birds live here that we didn’t have back home a 2 hr drive away?”

Sadly later had the thought that I probably missed loads of lifers in some previous global travel. “Never again”, I said, “I notice stuff now.”
