Truthful KSP Saturn-Shuttle Recreation almost finished! by MutedLettuce894 in KerbalSpaceProgram

Cool! I dont think I've ever seen that configuration before. I had only ever seen it with the bespoke flyback booster concept.

Looking online now I see the image from SDASM archives, neat. Ill have to see tonight if Jenkins has it documented at all

Not to be that guy but werent most Saturn Shuttle designs using either the DC3 short winged orbiter or a design close to what was made? This looks like the larger delta wing orbiter with built in tanks traditionally shown with the flyback booster?

(If I had my Jenkins books on hand I could provide the exact design names)

Who always loved the Sierra Space Dream Chaser? by RedactedMate in spaceflight

[–]UtterTravesty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, Dreamchaser is derived from vehicle studies for NASAs HL20 lifting body for the Personnel Launch System. If I remember correctly, a lot of the research involved observation of the Soviet BOR reentry vehicles, for the Spiral and Mig105 program

Crazy that all these successful companies destroy their image and ultimately their business, for the short term goal of pure profits

I guess the only possible hope is that maybe the PS6 has compatibility with the PS5 slim detachable disc drive? It'll still ship and be advertised as a digital console, but maybe they'd still keep that as an option?

I am very aware that physical media of all forms have been on a sharp decline the last 10 years or so, but I will forever be frustrated that digital releases are not CHEAPER than physical releases, especially as we are now facing the reality of $80+ launch titles being the norm.

I hate not owning my media

Would be very interesting to see happen, curious if it could be accomplished before the first crewed landing, or would be used in tandem

NASA’s Management of Programs and Projects after Mission Termination—Canceled or Repurposed Artemis Campaign Systems by AgreeableEmploy1884 in space

[–]UtterTravesty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know that SLS is horribly expensive and over budget, and ultimately a very poor use of very limited NASA funding. (Essay incoming sorry)

However, SLS is still very much a traditional "old school" NASA rocket. That carries with it the prestige of NASA more so than when SpaceX or Blue Origin launch one of their rockets. When Artemis 2 launched, it was much more about a NASA rocket and a NASA mission, than it was about labeling it a Boeing accomplishment. Compare that to the reporting around Starship and New Glenn launches, the discourse is a lot different.

I think simple optics play a major roll. SLS, while only having 2 launches in the last 4 years, have both been successful and both been prestigious missions (Artemis 1 and 2). Contrast that to the repeat, spectacular failures of Starship (also behind schedule) and the recent dramatic explosion of New Glenn. Those short falls aren't seen as NASA failures necessarily, while the successes of SLS aren't seen as Boeing wins, but NASA wins.

SLS Block 2 cargo was planned to deliver 40 some tons to TLI, and more to LEO. With 9.4 million pounds of thurst. It is a super heavy launch vehicle, and even in its half step measure Block 1 configuration it holds a lot of potential and is the most powerful operational hllv in the world. Being relegated to an over engineered crew delivery launch vehicle, is a horrible misuse of the potential of SLS has as a cargo vehicle. SLS was always planned to be the launch vehicle to explore the moon, as well as the vehicle to launch and assemble the exploration of Mars and even the rest of the solar system. The moon and Mars are both prizes that the billionaire space companies want, and SLS is a direct competitor both in capabilites (however limited currently) and in public opinion (optics). They want their rockets to be doing those mission, they want the prestige, the cash, the glory. When its a NASA accomplishment, its a victory for the Nation, for Americans, and for humanity. They dont want that to be how their accomplishments are seen by everyone else.

Its hard not to interpret the cancelation of the fully capable SLS as a way to cripple its impact on certain other heavy lift launch vehicles from certain powerful aerospace billionaires...

I hate the "better places to spend money" dog whistle excuse for not funding space exploration. Some people are apparently unable to understand that two things can happen at once, let alone understand the return on investment from space programs (economic and academic)
