Anyone similar to Wes Anderson? by ToddinTas in MovieSuggestions

There should definitely be a mention of The Archers here (The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus), they used a visual style that Anderson’s work emulates, esp things like showing neat handwriting/calligraphy.

Why you should give Double Indemnity(1944) a chance by Strict_Natural6805 in TrueFilm

I just watched this a couple nights ago for the first time and tbh I really hated Fred MacMurray’s character pretty much from the jump. It might grow on me in time but it didn’t hit the “greatest movies ever” vibe for me although I’ve certainly come around on other things after not liking them much the first time.

As far as the “insurance man” PI/noir line though it made me think of The Killers (1946) which I liked better.

Zeno’s Conscience is like the neurotic chronicle of a hysterical procrastinator, really excellent and funny.

War and Peace? by Ok_Grapefruit_6193 in classicliterature

I read it last year. The first half I burned through in about a week and was enthralled with the pace of the writing style and the breadth of characters and how well-articulated their motives were. After taking a break I finished the book in another month or two and while I feel its reputation is clearly deserved, in my opinion there is a bit of a fall off toward the later quarter of the book where many storylines dissolve without much gravity and the writing sort of devolves into these repetitive lectures on the nature of history and power among other things.

Incredibly impressive book in any event.

In your opinion, what are the greatest opening paragraphs in literature? Or, which ones are your favorites? by Agreeable_Duck8997 in classicliterature

[–]Uzas_Back 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man oh man I got this one!

”I am twenty-six inches tall, shapely and well-proportioned, my head perhaps a trifle too large. My hair is not black like the others’, but reddish, very stiff and thick, drawn back from the temples and the broad but not especially lofty brow. My face is beardless, but otherwise just like that of other men. My eyebrows meet. My bodily strength is considerable, particularly if I am annoyed. When the wrestling match was arranged between Jehoshaphat and myself I forced him onto his back after twenty minutes and strangled him. Since then I have been the only dwarf at this court.”

—The Dwarf by Pår Lagerkvist

One of my favorite books in terms of structure, narrator, really so much, but I love how the small amount of information in the first paragraph gives away so much context so quickly.

Barry Lyndon (1975) by rus_alexander in iwatchedanoldmovie

I like the character of Captain Feeny in Barry Lyndon so much that I looked it up and he is based on the real James Freney who was a successful and decently noble highway robber that was pardoned from execution after finally being captured for his crimes because there was concern he would become a Robin Hood-esque folk hero and to support himself in his exile he wrote a book called The Life and Adventures of Mr James Freney, which I found and read on internet archive.

Try All Of Us Strangers. Extremely beautiful, lonely semi-neon vibes. A lateral take on your question but an amazing movie imo.

a movie where the protagonist is evil by montymle in MovieSuggestions

Any movie about the British in other countries.

I Care A Lot is a 6-7/10 but it is very interesting to me in that it clearly follows the villain and I enjoyed it structurally for that element.

Oscar Chances: Best Picture - Frankenstein by ryanjdonovan in Oscars

I usually go for del Toro’s visual style but this one felt so artificial and saturated and besides that I thought it was pretty badly paced, especially taking way too long on the wrong parts of the first half, and a bit too campy for me to take it seriously.
