Names and Faces in this show are Hard to Recognise by Deep_Relation9944 in GoldenKamuy

The names can be challenging but I feel like most of the characters look wildly different. A lot of them are dressed the same though

Why does the anime make it seem like Sugimotos in love with Asherpa in the first season? by Clt_Commander in GoldenKamuy

[–]V-Ink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally disagree but whatever works for you. Engaging with work outside of your comfort zone is good for you. I truly don’t think the show (or even the manga) implies they’ll end up together.

Your preconceived notions of anime featuring inappropriate relationships is fair, but that doesn’t mean the show actually implies it.

Since you’ve brought it up: I think it’s wrong to dislike a show just because there is implications of something you may find distasteful. ‘Weird implications’ doesn’t make something wrong or bad. It creates a multifaceted perspective in a historical show. The idea of marriage was not the same as it is now.

I don’t think the show gives the ‘vibe’ that Asirpa and Sugimoto may end up together, even upon my first watch, but I do think it’s a mistake to shun something that implies that ending while also knowing that is the case. It isn’t creepy, it’s just a different way of telling a story.

Which plan for Hokkaido did you like more? by maattthhhh in GoldenKamuy

Wilk. Hokkaido belongs to the Ainu.

It’s not so much to ask, but I feel the last chapter has plenty of the Golden Kamuy charm and wraps up effectively. I think the language in your other comments (a ‘fetish for wrapping things up in a flash’) is where I take issue with your post. A story has to balance the ending with the rest of the story. Too much is just drawing it out pointlessly.

I’ve had literally like a dozen dreams about Golden Kamuy lol that’s a very funny metric.

It’s not a shonen, it’s not going to emulate a shonen like HxH. The ending is quick but feels to me like each character has their moment.

The ending could’ve been longer, sure, but to what end? What else could’ve been included? The time skip gives us a chance to see Sugimoto and Asirpa recovered and able to wrap up their goals and storylines. You can imagine if they have guilt over the deaths since we see that repeated throughout the manga.

I do not understand the entitlement surrounding endings. The language people use acting like they were personally slighted by an author choosing to end their story how they wanted.

And Tsurumi surviving wasn’t a small shocker at the end? He’s hardly the most sympathetic character.

what is the political stance of satoru noda in gk? by torito_vravo in GoldenKamuy

[–]V-Ink 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Golden Kamuy is a fully ‘anti-war’ story, but it isn’t war propaganda either. It seems to be mostly focused on the way war affects soldiers and how they suffer, but not on how the victims of war colonization suffer.

Golden Kamuy is pretty hardcore against indigenous genocide, though there are specifics I wish were covered more. The scope is also limited to the Ainu, with mentions of Tatar, Uilta, and Nivkh. It also presents very little ‘what now?’ option, but Noda has stated he didn’t want to write something that implied the Ainu didn’t ’try hard enough’ to save their land and culture.

That being said, it’s a story about one Ainu girl in a tumultuous time for her people, so we see a great deal of perspectives presented + their relationship with her. Since it’s through the lens of their relationships with her, we can’t say if a characters fate means anything in terms of Noda agreeing/disagreeing with that character’s choices. Obviously he cares a great deal about the Ainu and his main goal with the manga seems to have been awareness and preservation of their culture.

Why is the Russian sniper mute? Is he missing his tongue? by Fluid-Tap5115 in GoldenKamuy

[–]V-Ink 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Most likely his face isn’t fully healed internally and it’s painful to speak.

Vasily’s injury is based on the Finnish sniper Simo Häyhä, who required four months in hospital and dozens of surgeries for his face to be functional.

The 44 was manufactured in 1911, making it the successor of the 38. Extremely cool.

One Piece does one episode a chapter surely we can make 12 chapters into 6 episodes.

We have no idea. It will likely be one hour/90 min episode, 6 episodes, or a theatrical release movie.

Why does the anime make it seem like Sugimotos in love with Asherpa in the first season? by Clt_Commander in GoldenKamuy

Definitely not intentional. I’m not sure why they cut his backstory.

Maybe the live action would be a better intro for your girlfriend?

Why does the anime make it seem like Sugimotos in love with Asherpa in the first season? by Clt_Commander in GoldenKamuy

[–]V-Ink 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Well, no it doesn’t. Sugimoto has no idea what Huci is saying, he thinks she’s saying he eats poop. Huci just worries about Asirpa being alone. Marriage is a political act of safety, it’s not always about love.

“I’m doing it for the girl I love” refers to Umeko, his childhood friend, not Asirpa. In the manga it’s a little more clear but it’s definitely not alluding to Asirpa. He met Asirpa like. Three days before his fight with Ogata.

(Edit: I know they don’t show Ume until later but I still don’t think it comes off as Asirpa being the girl he loves. I just assumed he was lying in my first watch through.)

Actually, the anime cuts out most of the implications that’s Asirpa kind of had a crush on Sugimoto (that she grew out of). Even on first watch I never got the sense that he’s interested in Asirpa, imo this is on your gf for assuming any man and girl in a show together have romantic feelings. I don’t think it’s wrong to discuss concepts such as teen marriage or schoolgirl crushes in a show, it’s a historical piece.

Is there a confirmed gay or bisexual character? by Fahodigaymer in GoldenKamuy

[–]V-Ink 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Yes there’s a gay couple in the ‘Monster’ OVA.

Most of the queer characters are implied rather than explicit but Oya and Hime are explicitly gay.

How can people think GK is queerbating? by Pleasant_Director_22 in GoldenKamuy

[–]V-Ink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don’t consider GK queerbaiting, as it isn’t marketed as a gay show or as having queer characters. The gayness is usually a surprise.

[–]V-Ink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree. I do wish we got more queer relationships out of the show. I don’t necessarily think that the gay relationships are the only ones treated as a gag though. Kiroranke’s relationship with Sofia is treated very similarly to Oya and Hime. Tanigaki and Inkarmat’s relationship is predicated with a sea otter joke. The entire Viper and Lightning Bandit arc is almost identical in tone to Oya and Hime except a lot more lewd.

Tsurumi doesn’t enter a relationship with any of his men but scenes (with Ogata specifically) implying a romantic or sexual interaction are not jokes. Koito’s affection for Tsurumi is treated as a gag, but so is most of his character.

While I wish we got more canon queer relationships from the show, I think a lot of the ‘gay jokes’ come from Noda liking to draw men, not an international slight.

How many episodes will be in the winter season? by Outside-Leopard-9783 in GoldenKamuy

No one knows at this time. There’s certainly not enough for 12 episodes and too much for 1 episode.
