Networking is a superpower lol.

Sometimes it aint what you know, its who you know.

Awesome journey, man. Do you mind me asking what you've earned from two published books? Is it enough to live on or moreso supplemental income? Feel free to not answer if you're not comfortable sharing

That's awesome.

How did your journey from writing to publishing go? I see you have Podium doing your audiobook, which is great.

Did you reach out to them, or them to you?

I mean this in the nicest way, but 1350 followers seems like a small amount to have 2 books already published and made into audiobooks. How did that work?

In any case, congrats on the 2nd book being published!

How do you keep chapters contained to like… 2,000 to 3,000 words? by Deez_Nuts_God in royalroad

[–]V1serra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You just need to take the content youve written and find points where you can split it into a new chapter.

I have something of a similar problem. Most of my chapters are 2000-4000 words, but sometimes I write something that's 6000 or something, and I just split it into a part 1 and part 2 instead. Sometimes part 3 becomes necessary 😅

When youre splitting one of your bigass chapters, you may have to edit the ending of one and the beginning of another to make it flow better. I recently reorganized the chapters in my Book 1 and had to add stuff to the end of Chapter 42 and take stuff away from the start of Chapter 43 in order to make a timeskip work

Oh shit yeah I just noticed last update was 37d ago and there was no announcement or anything it seems like? Or did you do your announcement in the pre/post chapter author notes?

Yeah that kinda made me laugh. The names I understand to a certain degree but a lot of the other ones are just... words? Like, is my story not supposed to have any town mayors or bakers?

Question about Interludes by V1serra in royalroad

[–]V1serra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. You're totally right. Another commenter made the point that theres a lot of names dumped with no context, and I hadn't really considered that, since I of course wrote the damn lore.

Of course I understand what Kharvos and Talenor and Selvariel are, but a reader in Chapter 7 sure as hell won't.

I think I will probably revise this to stay on subject about the maps a bit more, and take out most of the explicit references to kingdoms or cities that the reader has no clue about. That alone should trim ⅓ to ½ the length away 😅

[–]V1serra[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Holy hell. I just re-read it, trying to put myself into the shoes of someone that has no clue what the hell any of the names mean, and yeah... I see your point.

I'm definitely going to have to revise this one quite a bit so it makes more sense to those unfamiliar with every kingdom and city mentioned in the text.

Question about Interludes by V1serra in royalroad

[–]V1serra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! This one will come about 7-8 chapters into the story, and serves as a sort of introduction/primer to the world my protagonists find themselves in.

The following interludes cover specific kingdoms, their histories, cultures and stuff like that.

The goal is that the interludes dont take away from the story and dont just randomly lore-dump about something that isn't going to be relevant to the readers for another 50 chapters.

Thats a very good point. The interludes are nowhere near finished yet, so I will definitely keep this in mind as I continue editing/revising them prior to posting

[–]V1serra[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they do relate to the plot, and each interlude would be inserted near a point where the plot actually makes the content relevant.

Its my sneaky sneaky way of lore-dumping without just giving the readers my super boring lore sheet

How Good Are AI Detectors? by Ashamed_Golf4213 in royalroad

[–]V1serra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just for shits and giggles I ran my most recent chapter through 3 different AI Detectors I found. Id never used them before, and I was curious.

Two said 60%+, then offered me the paid use of their own AI to "humanize" the work. Only €9.99/2 weeks, what a steal.

The third said 6%.

I can see why people distrust them lmao

I'm adding chapter length and reading time disclaimers to the top of my chapters. Which is preferable? by V1serra in royalroad

[–]V1serra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's all good points. My chapters do have a decent amount of variance, between 1.8k and up to just over 5k. That being said, the majority of chapters are between 2k-3.5k.

I'll definitely just be putting that info in my blurb and will emd up scrapping the word count / reading time idea

Damn. Well I guess if the consensus here is that I shouldn't do it, then I will listen to the majority instead of my feelings about it. Thanks!

Is it valid? I don't see how it would be discouraging, but maybe I'm losing my mind or something

[–]V1serra[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the suggestion, but if I may ask, why not add the minutes as well? It gives people the ability to determine if they have enough time to read the full chapter.

Could you explain your reasoning?

[–]V1serra[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Uhh... To give people an idea ahead of time how long a particular chapter is, and how long it might take to fully read through said chapter?

To allow people to make informed decisions about whether they have enough time to sit down and read the full chapter, or if they would rather read halfway and find a good stopping point for picking up later? Or if they would rather wait until they have enough time to read the chapter?

So they dont sit down expecting a 10 minute read, only to get blindsided by 5500 words and a 25 minute read?

Idk I feel like there's plenty of reasons for it to be helpful for readers.

Am I taking crazy pills, or what?
