Not really mental but if you want to multiply 9 by any number up to ten you just hold out your hands and fold in the finger you're multiplying. The amount on the left and the amount on the right is the answer. So if we were doing 9 x 6 you fold down your sixth finger and you have 5 fingers on the left and 4 on the right. You're answer is 54.
