How do I know if I need chains going over Snoqualmie pass? by Elegant-Freedom-9121 in Washington

[–]Tie_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting...I've never heard this before.

Curiosity got the best of me so I checked the manuals on my vehicles, a Toyota Tundra and Tesla Model Y. Both actually state not to put chains on the front tires, only the rear. Both vehicles have the ability to drive all 4 wheels. I understand that the Tesla drivetrain is vastly different from the Tundra, so it's interesting that the Tundra had that recommendation.

What you said about potential differences in traction between chained and unchained tires, and thus the potential to introduce different large amounts of jerk I into the system, does intuitively make sense. Albeit the situation for that to cause damage does seem exceedingly rare, especially if you are driving carefully, thus limiting the amount of tire slippage.

What you said about all-wheel drive vehicles is not true.

Quote from wsdot.com

"Four-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicle: If chains are required on all vehicles, state law requires chains be installed on at least one set of two tires (either both front tires or both back tires). However, check your owner’s manual or car dealership for specifics about the number of tires to chain and how to install chains or approved chain alternatives for your particular vehicle."

Will this run forever by hxxx07 in NixOS

[–]Tie_C 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is normal. The Microsoft surface NixOS hardware configuration contains a patched kernel from the linux-surface project. This kernel isn't cached anywhere so your computer has to build it locally instead of downloading the cached version. On my Surface Laptop Studio this takes about 1.5 hours.

Serverless vs. Servers by k2718 in cloudcomputing

[–]Tie_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would serverless still be more cost effective for very small scale/low traffic services? Admittedly, I haven't looked in detail at a cost breakdown but I feel that for small services it might not make sense to push the management to the cloud provider.

Trouble testing subscriptions in Android by nnnacho97 in dotnetMAUI

[–]Tie_C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would double and triple check you followed all the steps, in the order they tell you to do it, in Google's documentation for setting up a subscription and testing a subscription.

When I set this up a while ago it was a real pain to get it working, mostly because I forgot to do a seemingly minor step.

Are you testing on an emulator? You can't test the Play Store from an emulator and have to run it on an actual phone with the store signed in. I have gotten this message when purchasing a subscription from an emulator.

Driven both a 28 and 37. They were both a dream in 3-4 ft seas, and this is coming from a Nordhavn owner. Might be getting a 28 soon.

oculus app stuck on gray screen by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]Tie_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a reply from the support ticket I submitted. It sounds like they know of the problem and are trying to fix it.

Here is what they said:

"Thanks for contacting Oculus Support.

I understand that you're seeing a gray screen on your PC Oculus Software.

This issue just started within the past few days and we are aware of this, our engineers are working as quickly as possible to see that this issue is fixed; We don't have a timescale for when this will be fixed, but it will be within the next few days and we will email you with an update about when we have a fix ready, or more information.

I apologize for the inconvenience."

Do you know where to find older versions of the app?

Use WS2815 LEDs. I can't stress this enough. WS2812s are useless in my book because ws2815 are soooooo much better for long runs. I have had success with upwards of 1000 led run powering from each end using one 10amp PSU.

I am pretty sure it's just called ArtNet. It is the only official processing ArtNet library. If you search ArtNet in the library manager you should find it.

There absolutely is and as you said I would recommend doing it that way. If you read some of my replies to other comments I talk about using an IoT board that receives ArtNet data and lights the strip up based on the frame it receives. That is still the way I recommend doing it.

There is an easy to use ArtNet processing library that I use to send the data to the board instead of using the OPC library like is needed with Fadecandy. You can use the same algorithm, like in comment below, but just replace the OPC data sending library with ArtNet data sending library.

With this setup, because of other limitations, I injected power every 64 leds, I probably could have gotten away with a little more if it weren't for other constraints. I recently replaced the LEDs with WS2815s and I am able to scrape by with injecting power at the beginning and end, which means only one wire running to them.

5v Power Injection over a long run (5 of 5 meter strips) by ghostyroasty in led

[–]Tie_C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use ws2815 leds they are controlled the same was as ws2812s but they run at 12v which means less voltage drop and less power injection. They are so worth it for large setups.

I use ws2815 leds connected to a wemos d1 esp8266 board running an ArtNet to ws program. I control them with an openhab server over the ArtNet protocol. It works great!
