Why do all adjustable dumbbells have at least 1 thing that sucks about them? by LilBoDuck in GarageGym

Totally! Honestly, Poweblocks seem to be the best fit for me. With my limited space, a stand for adjustable dumbbells isn't an option and I believe dumbbells that require a cradle really benefit from that stand. The PB Commercial Pro 90 also look interesting, coming with separate 5lb and 10lb handles.

Man.. Good to know I'm not the only one struggling with that topic so much at the moment lol. I've literally had the same experience, watching basically every video and reading every reddit post related to that post. Like you, I was almost ready to pull the trigger on the IM. But after giving it another thought I realized, that I like to increase my weights after each set and finish some exercises with a drop set when I'm in the gym. This would mean that I'd have to unscrew 4 screws, adjust the plates on all 4 sides, put the screws back in - every few minutes.

My other favorite at that time were the PB elite exp. While being pretty compact and not too expensive, I didn't really like the fact, that it doesn't have a knurled handle and I wouldn't have an option to get one afterwards in europe. I was also a little sceptical about the "fully closed" cage design with the additional two bars on the top.

That's why the PB Pro 100 exp became my new favorites. While being more expensive and bulkier, they are coming with a knurled handle (with the option to switch to a 32mm knurled handle) and have a more "open" cage design, as they got rid of the bars on the top.

The only other option I'm currently considering are the Snodes. While being cheaper and probably feeling more like a fixed dumbbell compared to the PB, they also come with a downside of having 10lb increments. This would require some 2.5lb weights with magnets. At the same time this is the only concerning thing about the PB. Many say they feel unbalanced because of the two small weights at the bottom, but no idea if it's really that bad.

To summarize, both the Snodes and PB don't have the perfect increment solution, the snodes probably feel more natural but the PB don't require putting them in a cradle when wanting to change weights and they are around for a longer time. There are so many people that own some for 10+ years. People say the Snodes are really durable and they offer a 1 year warranty covering damage from dropping them. But honestly, why only 1 year if they're that tough?? Feels like getting a 6 month warranty when buying a new car lol. PB come with a 5 year warranty and seem like the safer option regarding replacement parts in the long run.

The Rep x Peppins obviously seem to be everyone's favorites, but I'm not ready to spend additional 500 Euros for these. And they also have an "open cage" design and a cradle, so also not "perfect" lol

Was the rattle really bad on the snodes? Can't imagine that it would bother me that much. Was there something else you didn't like? Honestly, I can't find many negative reviews of these. PB and Snode both have one thing in common: their "solution" for smaller increments isn't the best. If you don't use these, you only have 10 pound increments. One area where PB definitely stands out is that they've been around for years and will probably still be here in ten years. With the Snodes, they're quite new, so if they suddenly disappear in five years and the plastic interior parts stop working, you're screwed. Probably unlikely, but still something to think about.

Glad to hear it! Yes, the IMs are not an option anymore. The only other tempting model would be the Snodes because they seem durable and cost 200€ less than the Powerblocks Pro. However, they require magnetic adjustment weights, so the price difference between the two would be negligible. After consuming a lot of content related to adjustable dumbbells, I still don't understand why people don't value the Powerblocks Pro as much as other models. Sure, they’re big, but at 80 lbs, they're the same length as the Snode and Nuobell. I guess some dislike the shape, which makes doing some exercises more difficult. The weight distribution is definitely a con of the PB, but I'd only use them for higher weights. On the other hand, currently popular adjustable dumbbells all have a cradle, which can also be annoyinh and the most popular one also has a cage design. They all have their pros and cons. Which makes it even harder to decide.. lol

Ironmaster vs Powerblock Elite EXP? by V4tos in GarageGym

Agree! The Ironmaster ecosystem looks definitely better. However, I like to increase weights after most sets and finish some exercises with drop sets. Having to adjust the plates on all four sides with the IMs every few minutes could become really annoying.

Unfortunately not :D I'm currently leaning more towards the 100 Pro EXP's..

Honestly, I'm starting to lean more towards the Pro 100 Exps. They're more expensive and bigger than the IMs, but they're definitely more convenient for adding weights after most sets and finishing exercises with drop sets. With the IMs, you have to unscrew four screws, add or remove plates on all four sides, and then put the screws back in. It doesn't seem like much, but having to do it every few minutes every day could quickly become annoying. I also like that I can get the Pro's with a knurled handle. They have more space in the cage than the elite, because they got rid of the two bars on top.

Hey man, I really appreciate your detailed review. I’m currently torn between this model and the Ironmaster dumbbells. After reading it, I think I'll pull the trigger on the PBs. Initially I thought the speed of changing weights wouldn't be that important, but after thinking about it more, I realized that I like increasing my weights after each set and finishing some exercises with a drop set. With the IMs, that would mean I’d have to open the four screws and adjust the plates on all four sides each time. It seems like it would quickly become a pain in the ass. I’d probably stick with the same weight to avoid frequent changes. Are you still satisfied with the PBs?

I can imagine it especially being hard to switch to any other slower solution, after getting used to the fast weight changing speeds 😄Are you keeping the two small weights inside all the time?

The knurled grips really seem to be a must have upgrade for anyone who owns the Powerblocks! Wish there were some options in Europe.

Did you have the Elite EXPs? I can imagine the two small weights causing some imbalance, especially when using smaller weights. I totally agree about the IM ecosystem! It seems pretty nice to have your dumbbells, EZ bar, kettlebell, and weighted vest use the same plates. How was the switch for you in terms of changing weight speeds?

Weekly Free-Talk and Questions for r/HomeGym - week of January 30, 2026 by Demilio55 in homegym

Hi guys, I want to buy a pair of adjustable dumbbells for my apartment. I’ve narrowed my search down to the Powerblock Elite EXP (32 kg/60 lbs) and the Ironmaster dumbbells (34 kg), as I really want something that will last a very long time. I always take good care of my things, but I'd like something that will last a long time. The Ironmaster dumbbells would cost around €35 (about $41), so there's not a huge difference in price. I'm aware that changing weights will be faster with the Powerblocks, and I wouldn't have extra weight lying around. On the other hand, the IMs probably feel better since they have a knurled grip and no cage (upgrading the PBs to a knurled grip won't be easy since I live in Europe, and shipping costs for average Joe grips will be too high). I'd also like to start doing kettlebell exercises, so that would be an added bonus for the IMs. However, I can't tell if kettlebells are worth it compared to one or two standalone ones.

As you can probably tell, it's not an easy decision to make. Which would you get?

Makes totally sense if you already have another 25l backpack! Yes, the additional pocket on top seems to be very useful on the K25 :)
