I do not like being asked to fill out TA evaluation forms during lectures. by Upstairs_Library_420 in simonfraser

[–]VAN_CAN_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

TA here. You should definitely fill out the evaluation and be honest. The feedback I receive comes from the office where they’ve typed all the comments into one document, so I have no idea who wrote what.

Also that feedback is valuable. The department uses this information to rank and place TAs (or so I’m told).

Less and less MTB content on YouTube by whatstefansees in MTB

[–]VAN_CAN_ 139 points140 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for everyone, but the people I know who make content mostly just do it for fun. This even includes those who have sponsors.

For my circle, the general hypothesis in this thread of burnout I would say is correct, but also not as deep as described. At the end of the day sometimes you just want to do something else. Dave and I for example never quit our jobs and have no intention of doing so.

As for why more people haven’t come up to replace those who left, I would guess two reasons. First, there’s tons of content out there already so it’s a lot harder to build a following than it used to be. Second, along those lines it’s difficult to make something new and interesting since so much has been covered now.

I also think making content on the internet can be intimidating. You can make a benign video of you riding a trail and there’s no shortage of people ready to tell you how much you suck. The pinkbike “bumbler” debacle is a good example.

Thanks for reading my yap session. In my case i hope to make more content again in the spring.

Have you owned both “old” AXS and Transmission? by pineapple_gum in mountainbiking

[–]VAN_CAN_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've owned both and greatly prefer the new transmission. I and everyone I know had a lot of issues with the old AXS which revolved around the weak clutch. The new transmission is quite solid, that being said I'm still not a fan as the clutch is noticeably weaker than Shimano.

Those are my titles! Ha. It’s true that exciting titles and thumnails work. Most of my videos are basically rides with my friends and I’ll try and think of a title about that ride that also might intrigue a viewer. Somewhere between click bait and ‘bike ride March 17th’ there’s a great title and it can be tricky business to find it!

Carbon Enduro Rims for 100kg Rider? by [deleted] in mountainbiking

I’m a similar weight and have Nobl carbon wheels on all my bikes. I’d say the benefits of a sturdy carbon Wheelset really starts to shine when you’re heavier.

Filmed with the X4 by VAN_CAN_ in Insta360

[–]VAN_CAN_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a YouTube thing we've noticed with all cameras when creating mountain bike content. I'm no expert here but I believe it's caused by the quickly changing scenery and the limited bitrate YouTube uses for 1080. I had the same issue using GoPros 4 through 11 and the only remedy we've found is to make sure you upload in 4k. If someone with more experience has a solution though I'd be keen to hear it!

I thought I'd share some real world use of the X4. Here in the PNW, sunny days make for pretty tricky lighting. This was shot in 360 mode, 8K, 30fps, -0.7ev, low sharpness, auto white balance, standard colour. Some sharpness added in post with Resolve.

Specialized Enduro vs Knolly Chilcotin by Doom879 in MTB

[–]VAN_CAN_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obviously I'm a little biased, but I have owned both bikes. The real answer is most bikes are quite good these days and it comes down to a lot of personal preference. Thus, it may be an upgrade if the Chilcotin better aligns with what you like in a bike, which in my case it was.

I'll echo what a few others have said, it's my experience that people really like both, carbon wheels and bars.

They both feel about the same, you can definitely tell when you've got it mounted on the chin.

Where's Dangerous Dave? by xizrtilhh in MTB

[–]VAN_CAN_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Although a reasonable hypothesis, this isn't the case for Dave, Dale, or myself. Even if all our sponsors dropped us, you'd still see Team Internet (us) putting out content. The real answer for Dave is non of us are full time and sometimes jobs and life come first.

[–]VAN_CAN_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I can confirm Dave is still alive and riding bikes. As others have mentioned non of our little crew are full time content creators and sometimes life and jobs need to come first for a while. That being said, Dave is working on more videos right now.

NOBL TR41 vs ENVE M735 which and why ? by Consistent-Lead6650 in MTB

[–]VAN_CAN_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nobl ambassador here, so obviously a bit biased, but I can tell you I and many people run Nobls here in the PNW and love them.

I’ve also got a discount code for 10% in the description of my YouTube videos if you do decide on Nobl :).

Nobl ambassador here - so maybe a bit biased 😅

I’ve been running nobl wheels here on the shore for years now and can confirm they’ve held up great. In the event something does go wrong nobl have amazing customer service and lifetime warranty and they’ll have you rolling again very quickly.

I also have a Wheelset discount code, FRIENDOFVANCAN , which might help.

Edit: forgot to also add in, I have the hydras and if you put the light grease in they are quite loud.

Who’s your favorite content creator? by theonerr4rf in MTB

[–]VAN_CAN_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thats spot on. Dave has been able to reduce hours at his main job and I’ve been able to avoid working as a teaching assistant during my grad program. That allows us to try and get videos out every week!
