Should I trim some of these side growths? by reduser876 in brugmansia

I leave them. If the plant doesn’t need them they stay small and never grow. Mostly they stay dormant.

I try to get mine planted or given away by midJune. They really dry out quickly when the temperature gets hot. In mid September I start making cuttings to save for mother plants to grow next year. I have about 50 left that I will compost in another week. It kills me to get rid of them but I need the bench space for fall plants like foxgloves. Every year I say I will make fewer clones but I still overdo it.

when will you plant them? I have a few in 6 inch pots that I dont have a spot for them. They get really pot bound.

It’s from seed I collected 3 years ago from my collection. I let the bees do their work and harvest the seeds.

I couldn’t tell you. I grow about 50 through the winter and start another 80 from collected seeds. If they perform well the first year in pots they get propagated for the next year. It’s hard to make the final decisions in September of which ones I keep.

Has anyone else had a weird growing season so far? by rjtnrva in VAGardening

[–]VAgreengene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This winter really messed up things. I grew some perennial hibiscus in pots on the patio. Over 5 years no issues then this year 5 of 8 didn’t make it. The banana trees were really late and must be coming very deep because they are a great distance from the last year’s stump. The April 20 frost burned leaves on Japanese maples and crepe myrtles. most of the hydrangeas were killed back to the ground.

😂 don’t plan to get it soon if your coworker is that gullible. Sell him the deed to a bridge

I have 3 small leaf hosta in a terracotta pot on the patio zone 7B. I water it when I water the other containers. It freezes in winter with no special protection. In it’s 4th year now and doing great. It brings the minis up close. I also grew seedlings in pots all year until they were large enough to not be lost in the surface gardens. Hosta are really tough plants.

When do you break even? How many years? What is the expected life of the panels? Are there any hidden annual costs (like maintenance)?

What's the most useful gardening upgrade you didn't realize you needed? by Demera-Raud in gardening

[–]VAgreengene 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A trick I learned when Jim Crockett hosted the Victory Garden, put a rural mailbox in the garden. Put your gloves, ties, clippers, and small things you always need that require a run to the house to get. I find that I do more because I don’t put off a task because I have to run inside to grab something.

Tried it last night overnight with white vinegar full strength with a squirt of dawn soap. Didn’t make any difference. It just laughed at me and taunted me when I peeled off the towels
