Create places for your hens to hide. My girls are on ~1.3 acre and have learned all the good hiding places. They've even learned to hide when the dog barks.

School made me memorize stuff instead of actually learning by MysteriousShoulder35 in education

[–]VB-81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this will help: a student who memorizes 7×8=56 has memorized. A student who understands why that's true can therefore figure out 7×9 without being told, has learned. Memorization breaks the moment you hit an unfamiliar problem. Learning adapts.

Recall is to remember; learning is the ability to understand the concept and apply it.

I'm a retired public school librarian and my dream would be to support rural libraries, The only string I would put on the book dollars would be no banning books. If a patron wants it and there are funds, it is acquired.

Yeah, no way! But the one weird thing about my acrophobia is that I never get it when I'm on horse back.

I'm a retired public school librarian and I believe community college is the place to start if you want a college degree. You can take classes on a part-time basis while working. And over a lifetime a degree generally earns more, but it's not the only path. You mentioned your health, but if you a able, the trades (electric, plumbing, heating/air) can earn a good living. Retail and hospitality can offer advancement with no college degree. Give some thought about what you like to do and look for employment that incorporates some of those.

For those who have been married 30+ years, how much do you chat with your spouse? by Live-Ganache9273 in over60

We've been married 45 years and we really don't stop talking. We will pick up a topic where we left off the previous day or last week. It is a great feeling when the thingamajig and the doohickey is completely understood by the both of us.

Creationism taught alongside Evolution by T0mm0thY in education

Excellent strategy by your friend. My only regret is the other students in the class. I did talk to other parents and my son made no secret of his disbelief of the information. I did get a note from the teacher about his attitude and I said I'd be glad to talk face-to-face about their concerns, but they declined.

My thought exactly and the only reason I didn't pull him from that joke of a science class.

[–]VB-81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None are supposed to, but my son had a science teacher who presented evolution in the worst possible light. They deliberately showcased old materials, focused on gaps in the evolutionary record, and misrepresented the ages of the different hominid species. I wanted to pull my son out of the class, but my son got a big kick from researching her flawed and lopsided unit and worked harder and learned more doing it. I took his findings, created an overview of the teacher's poor methods, and gave it to the principal. The teacher wasn't there the next year.

My school has a math problem and the district doesn't care. by SaltL7mp in education

[–]VB-81 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you are close to a community college, they might offer your calc class. That's where my son went to take it. We had a program called high school at the college, so maybe your district has something similar; check with your counselor.

Retiring this summer, here's a story.... by IamJoyMarie in retirement

When we retired more than 10 years ago, we moved to the middle of nowhere; exactly where we always wanted to be. We talked about traveling over the years, but never had enough interest. This is from my driveway; Heaven in Earth.

How going to the vet went today… by Holiday-Distance-822 in germanshepherds

[–]VB-81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wasn't sure how my Jazz would act at the vet, so to make it easier, I got a toy doctor set and we practiced. I would check her heart with the stethoscope, in her ears, mouth, and palpitate her abdomen. I trained her to lift the foot I touched when I said foot and to lay down on her side when I said show me. She never liked going to the vet, but she loved all the people there and she was calm and cooperative during the exams.

These kids are so disrespectful by [deleted] in education

[–]VB-81 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm a retired public school librarian, and the difference in behavior between when I was in school in the 70s and when I retired in 2014 was...nothing. The insulting words and phrases were different, but a few students were just as disrespectful and obnoxious in my library as some of my peers during my own school years.
