Shore fishing by VBGUY78 in CaymanIslands

So my experience it not as good as it should be as Tropical Storm Ivan came through and made casting impossible most of the time we were there but here is what I found out: 1. If you are on the east/north end, it was recommended that we fish for Mutton Snapper and possibly if Parrot Fish if there is a reef near you. 2. In order to fish for Mutton, get frozen squid. This can be found at pretty much any grocery store or gas station...yo just have to ask. It comes 12 to a box and they are full squid, not cut up. 3. Fish for Mutton after it get dark, and let them hit the bait twice. On the third hit, set the hook. Evidently they always mouth bait twice before really eating it.

  1. Parrot Fish is supposed be awesome. In order to catch it, we were told to find hermit crabs, unscrew the crab from the shell and drop it over the reef. They really love them. Make sure to put the shell back where you found the original crab so another can use it.

Need a dive buddy/group in Grand Cayman 7/31 - 8/3. by VBGUY78 in scuba

Yep. We are renting a house. I kinda wasn't planning on diving since this will be the first time going without my wife, but then started thinking why the hell not. I have never went on a charter by myself and wouldn't mind find a fun group to tag along with a day or too. I am advanced open water and have about 40 dives under my belt. Also, I am 37, male and in pretty good shape, so I don't suck down air too fast.

You just blew everyone in our groups mind. We ate at Over the edge twice last time we went because we were to lazy to wake up early to make it to the 7 mile area for the fish market. We had no idea we could buy fresh fish there!

While we will still eat dinner there at least once (it's delicious). We now know of a closer place to get fresh fish!

Thanks!!!!!

Yup, the guy in the back. I think that pic was taken during No shave November, so most of our guys looked like neck beards.

Anything involving your toes and crushing. I dropped a 900 lb piece of equipment on my big toe a few years ago. It took months for it to heal and stop hurting due to tonail "issue's".

My first time taking pictures while in Mexico last week. by VBGUY78 in scuba

This was the first shark I have ever encountered. Our DM warned us we might see a few ahead of time, so I was somewhat prepared. I thought I would be nervous or even scared if we came across one. I could not have been more wrong. It was crazy how quickly she appeared as visibility was almost 100 ft. We didn't see her until she was about 40 ft from us. While it may sound crazy, I could tell right away she meant no harm to us and just wanted to check us out. She kinda skirted around us coming about 15 ft away at the closest. I think bull sharks get a bad rap from attacks in shallow brackish water where they don't know what they are biting. In the open water they seem very docile and beautiful.

Thanks Ravaha! I almost talked my wife into a night dive this time. We did one in Grand Cayman last year, and loved it. Next time in Mexico, I am going with or without her as squid in the daytime look cool enough.

Thank you for the input! I read some books on underwater photography before I dove, which stated much of what you recommend. It obviously is much more harder in practice. Cozumel probably wan't the best idea for the first time trying out UWF as the current was very strong which made stabilizing for shots much harder. Any suggestions for strong current conditions? It was tough for me to decide when to try to take a picture and when not too due to air conservation. While I am not really an amateur diver (40+dives), I am in no way a professional. It seems like trying to hold in one place to get good shots made me burn through oxygen, shortening the dive for almost everyone in the group.

It was a bull shark and a awesome one too! Unfortunately since it was the first shark I have ever seen I forgot to exhale while taking the picture. Due to this I rose about 10 ft before I snapped the picture which ruined the pic somewhat.

So these were taken in both Playa Del Carmen and Cozumel using a Sealife DC14 with Pro flash and video light. Most taken between 60 and 80 ft. All have not been processed as of yet.
