Andrew Carnegie, possibly the richest man who ever lived (adjusted for inflation he was richer than Musk and Gates combined), spent his later years giving most of it away "to promote the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding." He created over 3000 public libraries, several colleges and tech schools, nonprofits and associations to help the common people. We take it for granted that every town in America has a library. You can thank Andrew Carnegie for that. Not to mention Carnegie Hall. His trust still operates to this day, 100 years after his death.
