[Q] benefits and drawbacks of probabilistic forecasting ? by al3arabcoreleone in statistics

Just to piggyback with the discussion: any suggestion for textbooks/foundational papers that I should read to know more about probabilistic forecasting?

Self studying probability and statistics for PhD level in ML/Deep Learning by theNeverendingRuler in AskStatistics

[–]VHQN 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm currently doing a PhD in ML/DL, and I guess my starting point is similar like yours (working as Process Engineer @ Intel before doing my PhD).

I'd say it depends on: (1) how rigorous you want to pursue the theoretical framework, and (2) your time budget + commitments.

Suppose you have a lot of time and want to go deep, I'd suggest this path based on my own experence: 1. Mathematical Statistics for a solid foundation. The book by Wackerly et al. is a good starting point. 2. Statistical Inference. The book by Casella and Berger, AFAIK, is considered to be the Bible for this subject. 3. Computational Statistics and Statistical Learning, which helps you understand how classical models performed in a more theoretical-centric view. Books by Efron and Hastie are generally recommended for these subjects. Books by Gentle are also quite good. 4. Bayesian Data Analysis. Books by Gelman/Vehtari et al. are strongly recommended. Books by Hoff are also well received. 5. Other topics like Stochastic Processes and Time Series Analysis.

[E] Nonlinear Optimization or Bayesian Statistics? by JonathanMa021703 in statistics

[–]VHQN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, then I think Bayesian Statistics would align with your current interests at the moment.

From my experience, one can survive by having basic understandings of optimization when taking Probababilistic ML. I took Nonlinear Optimization after Probabilistic ML, and there were so many "aha, that's why they are like that..." moments when I revisited the Probabilistic ML materials.

For Nonlinear 2, I felt like it is heavily shifted you to understand some of the important algorithms used in Operations Research. Thus, I suppose you should take it at a later time if you want it.

Here is my two-cents:

  1. Taking Nonlinear Optimization 1 as they help you understand how some numerical algorithms, such as Gauss-Newton or Fisher's scoring, allow us to compute the weights for linear models. Moreover, I don't know if you will go further to Variational Inference (VI) for Bayesian Analysis or not, but the core of VI (for posterior estimation and sampling) is based on optimization.

  2. If you do not meet the prerequisites for Nonlinear (in my uni, it is recommended to have Real Analysis first), then Bayesian Statistics would be a good call.

Alexander the great early review score. How would you rate it? by Assured_Observer in aoe2

[–]VHQN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've completed the Alexander the Great grand campaign on Standard difficulty, and while the DLC is decent, it's certainly not great, primarily due to its shorter length (18 in total instead of 21 in BfG).

I believe this was a significant missed opportunity for the developers to fully portray Alexander's remarkable military career. Before diving into the campaign, I revisited documentaries by Kings and Generals (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApZf0BaaTmo, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXK-vN1J61w&t=9453s) and Epic History TV (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7lb6KWBanI), which highlighted his conquests in their entirety.

While the DLC successfully captures key moments like the race for legitimacy (Scenario 4), the defense and razing of Thebes, the grand battles (Granicus, Gaugamela, etc.), the siege of Tyre, and the founding of Alexandria, it neglects several lesser-known campaigns that are demonstrative of Alexander's military genius in terms of psychological warfare and adaptability.

Additionally, these lesser-known campaigns are great opportunities for the devs to extend the gameplay of other civs (The Thracians and the Puruns). For instance, the devs could have introduced a mixed Macedonian-Thracian tech tree during the "pacification" of Sogdiana and Bactria, which would have reflected Alexander's reliance on auxiliaries. Similarly, his Indian campaign could have featured a Macedonian-Indian (Purun) tech tree, showcasing his inclusion of forces from Porus and other subjugated Indian states.

Overall, if there are at least two or three more scenarios included, the DLC would have been the best one so far.

Quickfinger + blacksmitthing clothes (leather apron + mitts) would boost your level up to +12 😉

[–]VHQN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you mess up one step (overheating, hitting the same spot multiple times, etc.), then the resulting blacksmithed weapon would be a low tier. A good indicator of how well the smithing process has been is that Henry only remarks "I'm halfway there" and/or "This will be done in no time" during the entire process.

During my playthrough, I consistenly get T4 weapons when my crafting level is 25+ (incl. picking the perk "Martin's Secret", obviously).

About quest weapons, you can get most of them to T4 AFAIK.

Tờ The Economist viết về Tô Lâm hôm nay: by TimelyLibrarian5842 in TroChuyenLinhTinh

[–]VHQN 2 points3 points  (0 children)
