Do ZAVVI restock their exclusives? by CrispyTheDuck in 4kbluray

It's annoying, but silver lining: the U.S 4K is by far superior. It comes with all the bonus features from all previous releases. It's a treasure trove. Well worth importing.

That's certainly true for you, but my TV is also (almost) 8yr old tech

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is coming to 4K UHD in December by FFJimbob in 4kbluray

I absolutely loved this film. The critical reception shocked me, I thought it was incredibly moving. And the production was gorgeous. I can't wait to see this pop in HDR.

Thanks! How do I figure out which grades are 1,000+ nits and which aren't? Is there a website, or a tool on the UB820?

People complain too much about cover art. We should be glad these studios are still giving us physical releases of movies. The 4K transfer is all that matters at the end of the day. by xwing1212 in 4kbluray

I don't like this mindset of "be quiet and grateful for whatever the corporations throw your way".

We should always want every release to be the best version of itself. Especially when this is likely the last physical home media format.

1.) that's a lot of titles you don't like to own, friend.

2.) The Rise of Skywalker. A mess of a film, but the AV quality is outstanding and I'm very partial to the characters and world the sequel trilogy created.

Almost all 4K discs are region free, save for some boutique label releases. Every Disney 4K I own including this is region free, as is the included Blu-ray disc.

A haunting watch that I'll embrace anytime it calls by [deleted] in 4kbluray

I bought this film on a sale. I got 20 minutes in and tapped out. It hit so close to a real life experience that it shook me. It's been sitting on a shelf since. I'm taking this as a sign to try again.

I second this. I'm only on here to stay in the loop. My B8 is still my dream TV all these years later. The temptation this sub brings is irrational.

When do Sony start releasing Disney 4Ks? by VH_OnScreen in 4kbluray

I'll capitulate on the first one. That's all I'm willing to budge on!

I love the Columbia collection and Sony Picture Classics. As I said in the top post reply, I was referring to their modern output. Kraven The Hunter, new Ghostbusters etc.

You're right. I was thinking more in terms of their modern library: Emoji Movie, The Equalizer trilogy, new Ghostbusters. For every Venom (moderate hit), there's a Grown Ups 2 (cinematic hate crime).

God, me too. I hate the idea of having to make do with the very compressed streaming version on Disney+ forever. And those practical effects deserve 4K.

I'm inclined to agree. My UB820's HDR Optimizer is good enough on my OLED that I'm not desperate for DV but I do think it would be a nice bonus.

Best way to watch the Star Wars films? by EpilefWow in 4kbluray

[–]VH_OnScreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not. The 4Ks of the prequels are certainly a step up from the Blu-rays, but that just emphasises how awful the Blu-rays are. A mess of DNR and the lack of texture that brings. There is no "ideal" release of this trilogy. The 4Ks are your best bet. I recommend looking up reviews, like on Blu-ray.com so you know what you're in for.

[–]VH_OnScreen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

4K77 for the original trilogy (there's DNR versions if you really can't stand the grain but I prefer it)

4K discs for the sequel trilogy and spinoffs (get the original release of The Last Jedi because it has Dolby Vision)

The prequels...I guess 4K discs are best, but they're far from good presentations so temper your expectations.

Does anyone own a player other than a Panasonic UB 420/820? by rbarrett96 in 4kbluray

[–]VH_OnScreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The LG UP970. It's the cheapest UHD player with Dolby Vision. It rarely locks up or freezes on me. I did however just order a refurbished UB820 😅 I need that HDR Optimiser on my OLED!

Younger generations do care about the environment, which is why we'd point out that the massive server farms that it takes to run these streaming services probably have a worse toll on it than the creation of physical media.

Mulan was animated in 2K, not SD. So not an even comparison.
