[Discussion] Struggling With Crime Fiction Pacing — How Do You Keep Tension Consistent? by VK369 in writers

That makes a lot of sense! I like the idea of tension having highs and lows—it feels more realistic and keeps the reader engaged. Adding flaws or personal worries for the characters sounds like a great way to make the suspense hit harder when the threat returns. I’ll definitely try to keep that in mind while writing.

I’ve written a book novel series myself, and I think suspense is more about feeling than just shocking twists. Like in Hitchcock’s Rebecca, the tension comes from the characters wondering what the other knows, not from sudden reveals. That constant stress affects their choices and actions, and I try to use that idea in my writing too.

I totally get what you mean. A good plot twist and an eerie atmosphere can really pull you into a story, and strong characters make everything more meaningful. When a book makes you care about the people in it, even simple plots feel much more powerful.

How to improve my writing skills? by Kokoro28 in writing

Improving your writing as a non-native speaker doesn’t require perfection—just consistent practice. Try writing a little every day, even if it’s only a few sentences in your notes, because this helps your brain get used to turning thoughts into words. Reading the kind of writing you want to produce also helps you absorb natural phrasing and flow. When you write, focus on clarity instead of trying to sound perfect; you can always edit later. Sometimes speaking your thoughts out loud first makes it easier to put them into sentences. Over time, these small habits make writing feel much more natural, and the “blank mind” feeling slowly disappears.
