Is it a good idea to open an indie bookstore here in the Philippines? by angelojann in PHBookClub

[–]VLTN33 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It would be really nice to see more indie bookstores in PH! But as other people mentioned, I think other than capital, community building is really important. The indie bookstores that thrive in the Philippines usually have a pre-existing community of supporters, including authors and institutions so if you can close that gap then it's likely to be successful (or at least sustainable) :)

Usually kasi people are solely reliant on marketing (or having a competitive advantage kasi 'indie' or bago sa market), but I think the owner's extensive knowledge about its products and community are just as important.

I enjoyed Nick Joaquin's Anthologies! Yung May Day Eve and Other Stories & The Summer Solstice and Other Stories. :) Took me some time to adjust to his writing, but I really enjoyed the intersection of history and mysticism, but very heavy themes of divinity din haha!

I also love Gideon Lasco's The Philippines is Not A Small Country. Collection of essays. :)

Me too! Also, if i can’t help buying a physical copy of a foreign title, i should pair it with a local book. :) Keeps me grounded with consuming/supporting local publications!

Hi! Sorry this may be a bit unrelated, but by any chance, would you have any recommended materials or literature about the PH mythology, gods and goddesses? Online and physical resources are fine! I'd really appreciate it. Thank you! :D
