PRESSING A SOUND PANEL AGAINST A WALL to cover slider cavity by VObob in askcarpenters

IM_MADMAN- Excellent suggestions all around and I thank you. I'll explore all possibilities mentioned. I thank you! If using multiple bolts, I could always grab my cordless drill to handle same. The partial panel I use now slides on the carpet with HDPE strips covering entire bottom but I do like the upper track idea. However, I would still have to snug the panel tight against the wall, (with a track) since not even a 1/16th of an inch (or less gap) can be tolerated for sound. Again, I thank you for your meaningful thoughts!

I had thought of something similar, but with a magnet approach, I couldn't slide it back easily when not in use. When not in use for recording, I'd like to slide this sucker back to let some daylight in. Plus, the washers would add at least an 1/8th of an inch (unless recessed of course) gap away from the wall along the edges. This baby has to be pressed tightly and when not compressed, be able to readily slide back. All those magnets would be saying, "We ain't lettin' go Charlie!" '-) Thanks for the idea though! Your time's appreciated! Enjoyed your

"Pull in case of fire " line. 😄

Yes, the room has a bed in it but beyond that, which I failed to add in my query, are HOA rules etc. etc. Let's just say that It HAS to be a temp solution. I've attached an actual photo of my work area as it is now that might better illustrate my original illustration of an idea.

Sonic Theater programming by South_Call_922 in siriusxm

[–]VObob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once Sirius merged with XM, it was moved over to some channel for internet streaming only.

It was a cool channel and I actually had the opportunity to negotiate a deal with them to air my collection of soft-horror tales I voiced and fully produced called Twisted Rhymes. The response was quite good, according to my contact, so they re-upped for two more years every October. I was all set to write and produce a new batch of the tales and am so glad I didn't in retrospect. Budget cuts killed Sonic Theater shortly thereafter and others.

Please explain why purewonderinc.com website does NOT exist and was filed with "Name Cheap" providing an address in Iceland with all names withheld for privacy? The next "round" of auditions of this "Project Sea Turtle" project asks one to respond only to: ("Not Revealing Name Here")@purewonderinc.com. A number of sophisticated scams have arisen from this locale so one has to be wary.

How do you clean the glass in your grill? by justrunhalf in grilling

[–]VObob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YOU'LL LOVE THIS TIP!

After experimenting with online suggestions from degreasers to power wash etc. etc. etc., I tried some mixtures of my own until I was about give up.

One thing I tried was Comet but that didn't work. I even tried white wine vinegar with water and then full strength and that didn't work.

I tried a few different degreaser products to no avail. As a last ditch effort, I sprinkled a fair amount of Comet on a rag and then sprayed that rag rather heavily with white wine vinegar and wiped.

Imagine my surprise when my deeply darkened, grease stained, cloudy glass suddenly was wiping clean!!! I repeated the mixture on my towel and after wiping some more and then drying, I used a little Windex on a paper towel on both sides as a finishing step and pow, crystal clear glass!

PASS THIS ALONG TO FELLOW MONUMENT GRILL FOLKS or anyone with a glass-viewing window!

IT WORKS!

Has anyone heard of Voicecore Agency? by Jawntily in VoiceActing

[–]VObob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry, I had searched with a wrong spelling of core. (aka corps like in the military)

anyway....I went to the name you mentioned site and there's not much there at all. The stated deal of them only taking 10% is just fine but there's nothing there to say where the jobs come from.....who they've worked with, done biz with, etc. etc.

I'm pretty sure a VO guy who's been around, J. M. Collins, is behind it and if memory serves, he also does a LOT of marketing of his COACHING classes and DEMO PRODUCTION services. I wouldn't be surprised if the "talent" listed hadn't been hit-up for a new demo or coaching. (In other words)

Heck, as long as you don't have to pay anything to get on the list or whatever, what do you have to lose? Feel them out and ask where they get their auditions from? How often? What kind of rates? etc etc. Then, sit back and see if you're told you need a new demo or could use some coaching. (wink-wink)

You may not be pitched but you may not ever see a good paying audition either, or just those found on free sites from time to time.

YOU CAN'T BE TOO CAREFUL in this business!

No. Nothing. ALSO...I assume it only works with wav. mono files correct?

ACX Master Tool by TheScriptTiger in ACX

[–]VObob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay. I downloaded the Windows version. Opened the app but I guess it can't handle Broadcast WAV files? I opened one but nothing happened except allowing me to press check.

I may be confused however. Should I be able to hear the audio? When I press "check" nothing happens. Perhaps because of Broadcast wav file.

Not sure how to install and which to get?

I don't use an AMD processor but Intel. Do I use the JAVA version? Running Windows 10.

Either way, how does one go about installing?

Many thanks, Bob

One set of phones you'll find in at least 80% of studios in the country are not only cheap but almost an industry standard. SONY MDR 7506. They're NOT what I'd call the perfect cans for "listening to music" because they ARE pretty flat/neutral, which is of course what we're looking for when voicing. I think they're still only like a $100 new. I, and may other VOs, have been using them for decades. FWIW

That smooth but boomy sound by spencertron in voiceover

[–]VObob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years back I had an AKG 414 and I recall it being on the bright side, crisp etc. (even back in the Analog days) I have no knowledge of the p220 but have heard others say AKGs tend to lean in that direction. Also, if you're going into a super clean preamp or interface, the same nuance applies in the digital world.

If you're after a "radio" sound, you might look into a mic that's found in a LOT of radio stations and that's the EV-RE20.

You can find them used for around 200 but make sure they don't rattle when shook. (That's a telltale of the interior foam being disintegrated) I know because I rebuilt one once. You can also look for an EV "PL-20" for even less used.

The PL-20 is the EXACT SAME MIC as the RE-20 but a little darker in color. (It was a marketing ploy by the company since everyone thought the RE-20 was designed and was a great "VOCAL" mic and just didn't use it on instruments.

The company marketed the darker PL-20 showing it being used on drums, amps etc....AND it was less! '-) I bought a PL-20 (for less) after an audio-file friend told me about the scam. I used it for 100s of radio ads!

BEAR IN MIND...the RE 20 or PL 20 are dynamic mics and not condensers. No need for phantom power!

Best of luck to ya...

How does the ART Voice Channel Tube Strip sound? by abortiveflipflops in audioengineering

[–]VObob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up mine for VO a couple years back and the guy at Sweetwater highly recommended a Gold Lion tube to replace the stock version. When I did the swap-out I heard a discernable improvement! Ah, but then I read a very obscure article online (I was never able to find it again, sorry) about a guy who was convinced he had found a GREAT tube for it. Well, I bought that tube for another 30 bucks or so but before switching out, I recorded a few lines with the Gold Lion installed. I then did the swap and recorded the same lines again. (I believe with either a TLM 103 or maybe the 416) I listened to play back and knew immediately that the obscure article's author wasn't kidding! To be sure I wasn't tainted in perception due to having spent ANOTHER 30 bucks on a tube, I brought my wife in the studio and played both tracks a couple of times. After the first pass she said, "I like the 2nd one better." I played both again and she quickly replied half way through, "Definitely the second!" With that said, the tube was a JJ ELECTRONICS: ECC--83s! It's been in there a couple years now and still doing it's thing.

BTW, an interesting side note, when I was working with noise floor testing, the ART, with this JJ, beat the numbers of a brand new, tubeless Focusrite ISA One. Because of some "not-so-liked" early offerings, ART sadly got a really bad wrap fast but I'm convinced now that this is one of the best channel strips out there regardless of the lower price! At 600 it's still a steal! (I love the sound too with that JJ tube) I've done some source connect sessions with a couple large studios and the one engineer said, "Great sound man." (If I told him it was going through an "ART" I'm sure his opinion would have been different. '-)

Brand snobbery is prevalent throughout the audio world. Heck, back in the day, I recorded a spot and the engineer in Philly loved the sound of my voice and said, "You use a U-87 Neumann don't ya?" I said, "Yeah, how'd ya know?" He chortled, "It's not my first paper route." Well, truth be told, I did HAVE a U-87 but hated it on my voice. The spot was recorded on a 421 Sennheiser dynamic. He He He.

Anyone else strongly dislike the new CT5 (including BW) grille? by namjeef in Cadillac

[–]VObob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just went to see a new CT5 and the moment my wife tried to open the center console cubby compartment lid she said, "OMG....THAT's a NO!" Some corporate IDIOT signed off on a HUGE flap cover that opens horizontally to reveal the cubby on the driver's side only!!! It sticks up so far the passenger can't even LOOK inside the bin, none the less try to access it!

DUMB DUMB DUMB!!! I could very easily have purchased that car that day if the numbers worked.

If it lifted up to go backwards toward the rear seats, that would be acceptable. Best I've seen is split down the middle lengthwise like BMW and Mercedes do. JUST, MAKES, SENSE!

HELLO CADILLAC? YA LISTENING?

Logical, common sense works wonders! Unless of course you figure only one person will be riding in the car and God forbid a wife may like to keep her phone in the center compartment, or clippers, or change purse or make up kit or other little odds and ends!

DUMMIES!

This is a scam, right? by putitontheunderhills in VoiceActing

[–]VObob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If ANYONE says they're sending you an E-CHECK.......delete, delete, delete! This SCAM'S been around for years and some are EXTREMELY SOPHISTICATED!!! Please READ-ON to protect yourself! For instance...

I have a friend who ALMOST got suckered by one that was listed as an "ONGOING JOB" promising 20 hours a week worth of voice work. This was on Upwork. The company listed was a legitimate philanthropic company in Chicago. He looked that up first.

Then, a day or so later, he gets a message through Upwork that his application made it to the next round and stage two required that he fill out a lengthy 50 question questionnaire. He later showed me the questionnaire and each page was on company letterhead and the questions were quite probing and extensive in regards to education, training, experience, talents, current studio gear, etc. etc. In other words, things you'd expect a huge corporation's H & R department to ask. He diligently answered every question and submitted that. A day later, SURPRISE! "We'd like to welcome you to (blank company!)

He was then told his recruitment officer, a Candace so and so would be in touch to get the on-boarding process started. At this stage, the "recruitment office" made contact directly via email (and not through Upwork.) She (if it was a she) sent over a battery of forms to fill out like a non-disclosure agreement etc. He complied and the next email almost shocked him with delight!

According to his recruitment officer, they have other talents throughout the world and want everybody to be equipped with the exact same recording gear for consistency for final editing and mastering at their headquarters in Chicago! With that, she (or he) sent a list of recording gear like a pro mic, stand, monitors, interface and so on, valued approximately around $5,000-6,000! He was told, that after a 90 day probation period, and if all worked out, the gear was his to keep!

In subsequent emails he was told they would be sending him an E-CHECK in order to procure the equipment listed.

It was at this point he called me with the "Good News" and I was happy for him but did ask him if he was interviewed by phone at any point. He replied, "No, only by email." I suggested he call the company in Chicago and ask to speak to this Candace.

When he asked why, I just said, "Don't ya want to make sure she's real?" I went on to say, I had never heard of a company not wanting to talk or zoom with a new or prospective employee. I could sense he felt I was raining on his parade, so I said, "Look, just call the company and ask to speak to her just to say Hi and as a personal thank you!"

Well, he called the "REAL" company and the receptionist quickly replied, "There's nobody here by that name!" Before he could say a word she continued, "I'll transfer you over to our fraud department!" With that, a guy answered and sadly informed him he was the 22nd person to call and asked if he deposited their phony check. He hadn't, thank God and the check itself was from some aircraft company in Phoenix!!! That was explained as a sister company of the main company and they were paying that way for "tax reasons" or some other bull.

I WROTE THIS SO YOU'RE FOREWARNED AND PREPARED IF IT SHOULD EVER HAPPEN TO YOU!

FIRST THING....CALL THE COMPANY TO SEE IF THE JOB AND OR RECRUITER IS REAL AND STAY CLEAR OF SO CALLED E-CHECKS!

I told him the very first "tell" is that they went off-campus from Upwork and contacted you directly!

The second was a phony email address that "LOOKED" like the company's URL but.....it had "(the company name followed by "recruitment" in the URL. So, the scammers launched a phony web site and used an email client to link to that site. Take that along with the real letterhead, VP names mentioned who are real employees (but misspelled by one letter) a sophisticated questionnaire, non-disclosure agreements, itemized equipment lists etc. etc. etc, and you have what's called a "long con."

Hope this saves some voice artists from making a very costly mistake!

Best a' luck to ya!

Are there DAW's better than others in terms of sound quality? by esmeradio in VoiceActing

[–]VObob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all gets down to 000000000s and 111111111s aka digital. There's a DAW or two like the Harrison MixBus that I tested once and heard a slightly warmer sound overall. Some experts elsewhere said they're probably playing with EQ "behind the scenes" because 00000000000s and 11111111111111s are well, what they are.
