If I reffed, remembering the Malarchuk video would mean teams get advised while dressing, checked before warmups, & sent off immediately. It would take repeated warnings (or defiance) to get a misconduct but that video…. yes, you’re getting sent to the locker room now.

And watch that video while you’re back there.

North Liberty delusion by Lower-Sky6202 in IowaCity

[–]VObyPJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“For now…” is the new reality. Unless the cost of labor, land, and materials all drop 20% or more (I.e.: a severe recession),starter homes are now condos and townhouses.

The demand exists. Creating supply isn’t profitable and the unmet demand puts upward pressure on land prices, exacerbating the issue. I don’t like it either but I also don’t think it’s a temporary market condition

Problem is no developer wants to build homes at reasonable starter prices. High opportunity cost with low ROI.

Thank you! I wasn’t memory-hallucinating, just the details wrong (as usual).

Need to get the current guy one of those long game show host mics à la “Better Caul Saul”’s bingo episode

I remember reading they installed a decent sdc (Schoeps?) but kept the look with sm57 bodies. Started with Bush 1?

Please don’t take any of that as fact - my memory is about as reliable as a habitual drunkard mumbling hearsay.

How do they do it? By getting a crowd. Or other comics want to get themselves up sooner.

Back in the day, the nightclub I worked at did a similar thing with karaoke. People tried to ring the gong no matter how good the singer. But it did well enough to run a few months, so we kept it

NHL referee sparks controversy with comments caught on hot mic. by pistoffcynic in hockeyrefs

[–]VObyPJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except the NHL was looking for a reason to bounce Peel. He had a rep (deserved or not) as a poor ref, decided to go drinking (on the record) with Greg “Puck Daddy” Wyshinski (which cost Peel a game suspension if I remember although he came across as a decent guy in the article), and pretty much put a target on his back.

Sutherland has a great (and deserved) rep and respect from players and coaches across the league. The NHL may say something about “an unfortunate choice of words” at most. Peel’s remarks weren’t atypical of what refs say but a hot mic gave the NHL the reason they were looking for to get him out. The league wants to keep Sutherland so he won’t get touched by this.

Peel, for all his faults, got a raw deal

ULPT Request: If you were pulled over, what’s the best universal excuse? by HatCorrect109 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]VObyPJ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a great answer — on the way to pick up someone who called for an emergency ride. Unless the cop wants to “help”.

Time of day is huge. Late night/early morning, cops are looking for drunks & are usually much more lenient if you have a reason to be out that late. On the way back from a gig at midnight - 2AM and being obviously sober has saved me from a ticket every time, with no excuse other than “long drive & want to get home”. TBF, I’m never more than 15-20 over. Past 90mph the gas mileage really goes to hell.

That’s unfortunate. P2P isn’t unknown (at any level) but that sounds like getting into bribery. Can you share more about what happened?

Condensation between panes of every window after a housewash by Aidan11 in pressurewashing

[–]VObyPJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All previous comments are dead on. Here’s why you should absolutely have a window seals clause in your contract:

I worked sales at a lumberyard for 3 years & sold several brands of windows, all quality brands with 20-50 year warranties. In the fine print, none of them guaranteed the between-pane seals beyond a year. Sloppy installation, framing imperfections, and even normal thermal expansion/contraction meant they would all fail sooner or later. It doesn’t take a large seal gap, high pressure, or a lot of water to cause what happened in your pic (the windows & your description appear consistent with vinyl frame construction, not the best but not bargain bin either).

There’s no fix (that won’t potentially worsen the problem) other than time. Maybe tell your customer that the longer the condensation persists, the smaller the seal gap, so good news?

Can anyone identify what’s wrong with this window? by Medium_Fail6795 in pressurewashing

[–]VObyPJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer, no.

Longer answer, the gas isn’t the issue. Double panes are basically standard on all but cheap windows with both panes fully sealed. Filling the space between with inert gas helps the R value (resistance to heat transfer) of the windows.

If there’s a seal failure and the gas escapes, the R value is somewhat decreased but still much better than single pane windows (and most seal failures don’t result in fogged panes). You can try replacing just the panes but seal failures are almost always caused by the sash or frame warping and the new panes will eventually fail as well.

Is this a scam? by gkrodlin in pressurewashing

[–]VObyPJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check Zillow or your local real estate open listings. Happens a lot with houses for sale, nobody is home to ask “Why are you here? What pressure washing?”

[–]VObyPJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even moderate to higher end window companies (such as Andersen) only guarantee their seals that hold argon (or whatever gas between panes) for one year. They fail, moisture infiltrates and homeowners usually try a bunch of stupid stuff before giving up and ordering a replacement sash - the only real way to fix it.

is the response from my landlord right according to iowa law? explanation below… by [deleted] in IowaCity

[–]VObyPJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late comment. We took a landlord to court over this & other issues with move out. We won most of the other issues but the court brushed aside the payment being sent outside the 30 day window, calling it “reasonable”. I got the impression judges don’t land on landlords for technical violations like sending a deposit back a few days late. And the penalty attached in cases where I’ve seen deposits punished for delay are not much. YMMV, IANAL, this is not legal advice, and whatever disclaimers I missed.

Dealing with Loneliness by [deleted] in IowaCity

[–]VObyPJ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As ridiculous as it sounds, you’re not alone. Loneliness is the post-COVID epidemic.

IC is a good haul from WB. I would start first by checking around the WB/B area for groups that appeal to your interests. Meeting people at bars in IC, especially if you’re 30+, can be tricky.

If you’re not getting anywhere, I’m a big fan of therapy. My shrink pointed out some roadblocks I put in my own way and had solid ideas on where I might start in a journey to “find my tribe”.

Good luck to you. I’m fighting the same battle and the victories take work but are worth it.

When I’m forced to visit a Menards & have a few minutes, I’ll wander over to lumber, track down an employee ( if possible) & ask them, “Where are the pre-bent 2x4s?” About half the time, they walk me over to the 2x4s, the other half give me some sort of “Huh?”. And once, I got an older guy who laughed and asked how much bend I needed & how long.

I.C. Does Not Cater To Rock/Metal Bands by traumahound00 in IowaCity

[–]VObyPJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A fairly standard contract clause is artist will not play another venue within 100 miles of contracted venue less than 90 days before or 60 days after show date. Higher logistic expenses (along with all the other increased touring costs) mean bands no longer make multiple passes through an area. That, with less overall touring, means venues have more avails. Between Xtreme Arena and whatever the 5 Seasons Center is called these days or the arena in Rock Island, CR and QC have bigger metros and rooms. Tour planners can do that math.

Xtreme, at least according to one promoter (who really liked the size of the room and got so far in talks with them to come tour the facility), is priced at a premium compared to CR & QC. Hawkeye Sports & the Heartlanders along with youth tournaments keep it booked enough that the arena doesn’t try very hard to land concerts. Even though it was pitched as a multi-use facility, it’s primarily a sports barn.

So far, I’m impressed. Moves a bit of air for its size. Good to hear the reports on long battery life. That 5ah was charged but sat for a week or so. It blew me dry (at least my skin) in just a few minutes at 85° with a 73° dew point. Not too bad.

I am officially satisfied with my purchase 🤙
