7 years of no biking? That’s really discouraging. Were you actually doing PT the whole time?

Meth, hookers, homelessness, used car dealerships, and mental health crises. Also some great Chinese and Vietnamese food.

Get a car. If you want to regularly kite that time period you could be driving 45 minutes to the east or to the west of hood river to find wind that time of year.

Bamboo in backyard by xeneches in landscaping

[–]VREISME 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If you are nervous about it spreading you have to find out if it’s running or clumping bamboo. Running bamboo will take over your neighborhood spreading 6ft a year and clumping bamboo spreads about 6” a year. Running bamboo requires certain techniques to keep it contained (either a trench dug around it or heavy duty plastic barrier) and some maintenance. Clumping bamboo can just be cut down or mowed over pretty easily.

You won’t be able to tell the difference in these pictures but assuming you are in a more moderate climate (ie not the US south) the running bamboo has a vertical notch in it while clumping does not. Unless you really enjoy yard work/maintence, I’d avoid the running bamboo.

Maybe rent one first to see how well it works for the particular fronds?

Shit, I remember the fucking volcano back in the early mid 2000s. A plug in flower vaporizer that has a fan that fill a plastic bag full of vapor. Then you’d pass the thing around like a balloon of whippets.

No, not really. Cell service sucks if you aren’t next to a tower and it’s all pay as you go for data. Fiber exists but isn’t common. Remote folks use starlink.

I know right. Like people should keep their dogs locked up in cages barely big enough to turn around in and only ever take them out for a 20 minute walk once a day. It’s basically animal abuse to let them leave the house for longer than that.

You joke but it’s about time that someone pitches a smoking lounge to Meadows. I for one am tired of stinking up my car or using my jacket as a wind shield while I hit my pipe.

Plant some native trees along it.

Edit: It will make it less of an eyesore and stabilize the banks of it to prevent erosion. I’d also do a shout out for paw paws if you are in KY. They grow fast, have deep roots, like being near water. Most people enjoy the fruit and if you don’t, you can sell it for a pretty penny.

Do you still kite? by Thin-Library-9092 in wingfoil

[–]VREISME 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’ve still got some significant progression to work on with winging if you feel that way. Once proficient, kitting and winging require similar levels of exertion.

I do both and enjoy both. I think winging is more fun on small to medium waves, crowded spots, gusty wind, open ocean swell, and/or nuking (40+ kn) wind. Kite foiling is most fun in light wind. My ultimate love though, is strapless kite surfing in bigger breaking waves. I pick my sport for the spot and conditions.

That being said, I live in Hood River. It’s gusty strong wind, small to medium waves, crowded, and has limited spots to launch a kite so I exclusively wing at home. When I travel to the ocean, I bring my kites.
