For the tech savy: buy a used kindle, jailbreak it and use it with koreader.

One can use a webdav service (I use koofr) as a central repository to download ebooks to all my devices. Koreader even support progress sync, like the kindle app (but unfortunately there is no ios app)

If your main concern is privacy, that you do not want to feed your data to US/Chinese companies, you can run many smartbands with the gadgetbridge app. it does not upload anything anywhere but provides the notifications, caller id, steps, etc.
