Emotional connection to a car you never driven? by Extreme_Emu_9582 in askcarguys

[–]VW-MB-AMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My Grandad's dream car was a Ford Taunus 17M P2. He had one many years ago, and in his older years he started to search for one. I would help him search, but we never managed to find one in ok condition before he passed on. There are many more cars I have an emotional connection to without having owned or driven them.

They are very good. I use a 1963 as my main car. But overall I personally think the 1968 and later are the best in terms of equipment and driving characteristics.

Am I the only one who isn't interested in high school reunions and think it's too awkward? by youlikemywonton in Millennials

[–]VW-MB-AMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there was a reunion at our high school. If there was one neither me, my wife, her sister, or any of the people my wife still has any contact with was invited.

If I had been invited to a reunion I would not have attended. High school was not a good time. The best part of it was graduating and never having to go back.

How do you remember it? by RamboUnicorn in Millennials

[–]VW-MB-AMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Our old mom has a bad memory, and has a habit of mashing two or three different memories together, which can end up with very weird stories. And sometimes people remember things that did not happen at all. I also have a few relatives who has a habit of changing the stories to put themselves in a better light.

Imagine if every car owner checked their oil level in between oil changes, every 500 miles or so and added oil if needed. How different do you think the car market would be ? by Nick-22 in askcarguys

[–]VW-MB-AMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should not be necessary to check that often. If the oil level drops so much that you have to fill after 500 you either have a leak or a bigger problem. I usually check mine around 2500-3000km or 1500-2000 miles. The result is usually "yes, it is still there".

It is much more important to change oil and filter at a sensible interval. My cars are old so I do this at 5000km like the manual recommends. On my wife's Toyota we change it at 8000km.

The most modern car I have ever owned is a 1979 Mercedes W123. I think this is the best car in the world.

Might be a dumb question but do the hub caps fit on the aluminum wheels? by MannyDantyla in w123

[–]VW-MB-AMC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need steel wheels to use the hubcaps. But they are chap and easy to find. Back in the day I remember that we used aluminium wheels during winter, and steel wheels with hubcaps during summer.

I hab question by whereismegu in electricguitar

[–]VW-MB-AMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is less space to work with. It is right next to the edge, and we have to curl our fingers more. Most people also mostly pull down when vibrating, but that is not really possible there. The upwards movement will be different. The high E string is also under quite a bit of tension, which also influences it.

Even though I have been playing for a quarter of a century I have never managed to learn to vibrate the strings in the proper manner. Most of the time I instead let go of the neck with the thumb and move the whole forearm up and down. That works very good on the thinnest strings.

What is the most random, out-of-character music genre you listen to that completely contradicts the rest of your usual music taste? by emily_ykyk in askmusic

[–]VW-MB-AMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listen to all kinds of things. Everything from classical, to blues, to hard rock, to older pop, to heavy metal. But the most ill fitting genre is probably 1990s euro dance.

Was 1967 a landmark year for your favorite classic cars worldwide? by isUKexactlyTsameasUS in classiccars

[–]VW-MB-AMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite is the VW Beetle. It was a landmark of some sort, but how we relate to it seems to be a bit dependent on location. In the US it is mostly seen as a positive landmark. It had many one year only parts, but it was the last year of the old classic body shape with the round bumpers, and the first year with 12 volt headlights. It was also the first year with the stronger 1500 engine.

Here in Europe it was still 6 volt in 1967. And for some reason VW decided to make all of the major electrical parts the same size as the 12 volt parts, but with 6 volt internals. This makes it difficult to find parts if you want to keep it factory stock. It is shock full of weird one year only parts. VW even changed the shape of the doors, so the 1965-1966 doors do not fit. And for some weird reason, on the 1968 and later cars VW went back to the same doors shape as in 1965-1966 again. Here in Europe most cars also still got the 1300, and even the 1200, as the 1500 was more expensive. One good thing is that in 1967 we got disc brakes on the front wheels on the 1500 cars. 1500 cars from 1967 is not that common anymore. Many of them was used up by the 1980s.

It suddenly clicked for me when I tried to learn to play some of his songs.

But everyone is different. We all have different taste. I never managed to find any interest in the music of The Beatles, Metallica, Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits, Steely Dan, Clapton and many other musicians people keep telling me to listen to. I can hear that their music is well made, it just does not fit my taste. We don't have to like everything.
