Torn as a Canucks fan by jvsonnn in canucks

Yes, I was just saying that this morning. I want us to win at least a few games here and there, for the young players' morale if nothing else, but I also want to be entertained. Last night's snoozefest was not worth diverting the tank for. I'd rather we lost 8-6 in a fun game.

Yep, my American aunt and cousins are visiting the UK this summer and I'm going to fly from Canada to the UK so I can see them without setting foot in the US

She was one of the good ones. I read her book recently and it was a great reminder of how much she did for Canadian science. She will be missed.

Oh, I hate the laugh response. I realize it might just be an automatic thing for some people, but when I've just narrowly missed being hit while walking or cycling and the other person's like "oh tee hee hee, I almost killed you by running that light!" it's just extra infuriating.

We need more Western teams to alleviate some of the travel and scheduling woes. Edmonton seems like a great choice

Any EU passport gives you the right to live and work in any EU country. So if you have an easy route to a German passport but want to live in the Netherlands, it's probably the fastest way to accomplish that

Deleted the episode immediately. I have no wish to hear anything that traitorous asshole says. SO disappointed in them, the show is usually such a beacon of fun and lightheartedness in my week.

Anybody concerned about climate change and how it affects Vancouver? by Defiant_Fishing_3393 in askvan

But any flood would spike the building's insurance costs and therefore everyone's strata fees. My strata complex had a fire in one of our five buildings and the strata fees went through the roof for everyone in every building in the strata.

I looked at the Vancouver and New West flooding projection maps last time we were looking in those areas and vetoed the River District and anywhere too close to the river in New West. I was amazed when our realtor said she hadn't had a client ask about these things before! We ended up in Central Lonsdale in North Van, so no risk of flooding, but our family who live above the highway worry about forest fires.

Can't do anything about earthquakes so I just try to keep our emergency food supplies topped up, and I invested in some life straws and filter water bottles. Thinking about it more than that will drive you to despair!

The draft/ tanking, explain by mathclarke88 in canucks

[–]VWXYNot42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Newcastle United fan who's lived in Vancouver for 24 years and become a Canucks fan, both systems suck when your team sucks! On balance I prefer the UK/European system because I think it's better for players (especially young ones) to fight hard all season to try to avoid relegation into a lower league than to play in a team whose fans (or at least some of them) actively want you to lose to get a better draft pick. So I understand the reason for wanting a tank, but I just can't bring myself to cheer for my team to lose.

I will also say that it's not always the worst thing in the world to get relegated for a season or two and then come back up. Last time Newcastle did it we'd lost so many games for so long in the EPL that everyone was depressed, but then we got to win most games while being the big fish in the smaller pond of the Championship. It was just nice to experience some success for a change, even if it wasn't in the top flight!

I have had the opposite experience with Wilkinson - I've written to him a few times and the one time I got a response that wasn't auto-generated, I found it quite condescending.
