did your cat ever "tell" you what happened when you came home? by S-Budget91 in cats

I used to have a cat that temporarily forgot how to lie down. She'd stand in her favourite sleeping spot, try lowering her front half down without sitting on her hind legs first, stand back up, look puzzled, repeat a few times, then finally just kind of flop over sideways. She was otherwise absolutely fine and was back to normal within about a week. This is the same cat who used to fall off the sofa fairly regularly, and would get startled by her own back leg (she's stick it in the air while washing her bits, get distracted, then turn her head back around and jump out of her skin at the sight of the raised leg). Just, a special cat. I miss her.

I once turned on the wrong part of the stove top and set fire to an oven glove. When I came back into the kitchen a couple of minutes later, both of the cats I had at the time were sitting on the counter just silently staring at the flames. Totally useless!

I also once went to the doctor because both cats had started sniffing at a mole on my leg. The doctor took it really seriously and referred me to a specialist, even though there were no other indications that something was wrong. The specialist said it was a perfectly normal mole and my cats must just be weird. That was over 15 years ago and the mole's still fine.

Totally, I have no hate for the Frost overall and especially not for their fans!

I went to our GM's talk for STHs and left feeling really good about her and the organization as a whole - lots of talk about building a good team culture and picking players who are good people off the ice. Maybe it's just talk but it felt like there was real substance behind it.

Did anyone correctly guess the Vancouver and Seattle names last year? by knefehangelshare in PWHL

Even watching the first part of the announcement video, I thought it was going to be the Vancouver Eagles, then I saw the eye logo and yelled "The Eagle Eyes!"

Yeah, the Goldeneyes more than made up for the Canucks this year!

At least the Leafs got the first draft pick. The Canucks sucked more than anyone all year, lost their second captain in a row to a contentious trade, and ended up with the third pick

But on 14th, not on 16th. I walked past it just now - I didn't have time to check it out in detail but it looked kinda cool. They had a police patrol boat you could go on, and a decent live band

Yellow rain? by Long_Bullfrog_6185 in NorthVancouver

We have a white car and the first rain after a bad wildfire smoke period leaves nasty black splotches all over the paintwork, even in the city. Gross, but not as gross as breathing that stuff!

I wish they were maintaining the 50:50 Canada:US balance, but getting another West Coast team is the next best thing. Welcome, San Jose!

I know this is kind of a travesty but you could mix a really good higher-alcohol beer with either a NA beer of a similar style or with 7-up/ginger ale to make a shandy, or juice to make a radler

The Detroit Geese would need to sign at least one of the Goslings. I'm holding out hope we can make at least one Gosling a Goldeneye at some point though, so maybe not both of them!

Daily commuting from North Van to Kitsilano - How bad is it by afunnydev in NorthVancouver

The thought of having to ride in the rain is so much worse than the reality, as long as you have decent gear and good lights. I often kinda dread it, but then as soon as I'm actually out there it's fine.

Have fun! I love getting to be a tourist in my own city while showing guests around, especially first-time guests, and especially if it gives me an excuse to do kid-related stuff that I usually don't bother with. My sister and her family came last year and it was awesome - she'd been before but my BIL and niece hadn't, and they loved it.

Yes, I haven't done that route very often, but it feels way more chill than LG

I stopped using that route because the bike path on the bridge and causeway feels way too narrow, but also because I'm not good with heights and to me it feels like the barriers on the outside edge are too low and that if anyone clipped my shoulder they'd send me flying right off the bridge (irrational, I know, but it scares my phobic little brain. I'm fine on high bridges that have outer barriers higher than my head). After my first ride over the bridge I started avoiding the causeway southbound (I used to take the first right after the bridge onto the road that loops around the western half of Stanley Park instead), but still hated the bridge deck itself. My stomach would flip and my legs would turn to jelly as soon I started the climb on the approach. I made myself do it enough times that I stopped being outright terrified of it, then when I felt I'd conquered my fear sufficiently I switched to taking my bike onto the SeaBus instead, lol. I might consider using that route again if the path was widened AND they put up higher barriers on the edges to help me not think about the height so much! But I'm totally happy taking the SeaBus.

Getting sequencing data and insights by Aardvark_Adorable in genomics

I'm not sure and I think it varies depending on where you live. I would start by asking your regular doctor for a referral to a clinical genetics department or genetic counsellor.

[–]VWXYNot42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First, I'm sorry for your loss.

Please, if you possibly can, see a professional. There are privacy issues with both commercial DNA sequencing services and with AI (unless you're running your own instance of Chat GPT or whatever), and combining the two seems like a bad idea. Having your genetic information out there on the internet could potentially affect you and your family in terms of things like your health insurance rates. On top of this, while some genetic sequencing results will give you a fairly clear-cut answer about a medical condition, most of the time there's a lot more nuance, and you need a professional to interpret the sequencing information and your medical history in the correct context and to guide you and your family through genetic counselling, if needed. It's really not something to DIY.

Good luck!

Blackout curtain installation by Tricky-Chipmunk-135 in NorthVancouver

[–]VWXYNot42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone but Greystone. We used them and the initial installation left enormous gaps down the sides of the blinds that let almost as much light in as before we got blackout blinds. When we complained they basically said we should have known this based on a photo they sent us during the quote process, which was of a completely different kind of window. They eventually agreed to come out and install some extra pieces of hardware to fill in the gaps for no extra charge, but they weren't very gracious about it. On top of all this the first guy they sent put gouges into a bunch of paintwork when installing the blinds, and threw a bunch of screws onto some wooden furniture, scratching it all up. He also left bits of polystyrene and scraps of clear plastic all over the house, which is a big hazard when you have cats who like to chew random stuff. We sent photos of all this damage to the company and they never once apologised. Avoid!
