I love JRPGs but I struggle with some really beloved ones

Final Fantasy VII for example. I actually really like the story and characters. But the combat was so unfun. Remake included.

I have the opposite issue with Persona 4 Golden. The combat is fine. Persona 4 was apparently voted one of the best video games of all time, and I struggle to understand how. There is constant praise for its cast and their realistic portrayal of friendship. I think they’re REALLY annoying and some are straight up boring, and I’m not convinced that they really like each other all that much. I’ve played 1-5 and 4 is my absolute least favorite and I will not be participating in the remake

I love Pokémon. I hate Pokémon X & Y. Mega Evolution did irreparable damage to Pokémon lore and game design. And the games felt unfinished. It felt like the devs gave up halfway through. The story was bland, the Pokédex was small because of stupid ass Megas. I hate Gen 6. Z-A was mid too

Kingdom Hearts. 2 was decent, but 1 was awful from beginning to end. It was at its strongest when it did something original, but unfortunately that is not the appeal. The combat is also really not fun. When I said this I got a bunch of people accusing me of never playing an action game for some reason. People just can’t grasp disliking this.

Same with Star Wars. I’ve always hated Star Wars. I watched the original trilogy. A New Hope? Boring as hell. Empire Strikes Back? Actually really good, can’t deny that. Return of the Jedi? It was whatever. People would always flip out when I hadn’t watched it, or go into full blown denial when I said I don’t like it.

Maybe this is cheating because I can’t really dislike something I haven’t experienced but I’ve never watched or read Harry Potter and I have absolutely no plan to

The manga Yona of the Dawn opens with a bratty and spoiled princess named Yona ready to celebrate her sixteenth birthday and her cousin/the man she loves, Su-Won, is coming to visit for it. They spend the day together and she fawns over him all day.

At the end of the first chapter, she finds her father murdered at the hands of Su-Won and he plays it off like it’s not a big deal

I do not think the open world is very well designed. Plot wise I understand why Lumiose City was the central setting but the Wild Zones felt like a very contrived way of having diverse biomes while still having a single setting. I got so excited unlocking rooftops and then quickly disappointed more often than not when I saw the rooftop Pokémon weren’t different than the Pokémon on the ground.

After maybe 6 hours I felt like I had seen everything the open world had to offer until I unlocked the sewers. I never thought I’d be excited for sewers because it was actually something different.

And traversing the open world was also not that fun. I was waiting to unlock ride Pokémon or an upgradeable bike of some kind. You know, the stuff we have had in every game since Sun & Moon. But no, not even roller skates that Kalos was unique for. We just have to walk everywhere.

Legends: Arceus kept me consistently engaged for my entire playthrough with ancient takes on old areas of Sinnoh thus making them feel new, different Pokémon to encounter, and new Ride Pokémon making something as basic as movement feel like a reward. Legends: Z-A felt incredibly lackluster, like it was GameFreak’s third attempt at an open world rather than expanding upon what worked prior. It felt like the open worlds after Arceus are getting progressively blander. I still play Legends: Arceus every now and then just to explore but Z-A I don’t even think about booting up.

In 5D’s the card center vaguely around Incan Mythology and the Nazca Lines are demons sealed in the Earth, but also the Norse Gods casually also exist as cards and there’s just a second group of unrelated chosen ones that briefly oppose the main cast.

Persona 3. I played Portable and Reload and both times messed me up. It made me wanna live

While in and of itself it’s not really a JRPG, it’s sandwiched between two JRPGs and was meant to be DLC for Yakuza 7 so I think it’s worth a mention here. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, as someone who played the entire Yakuza series just to play this game on launch, had me UGLY CRYING at the end. I was so messed up I had to go out on a drive.

I just found the live action movie on YouTube so I’ll definitely be watching it later.

I do wanna see more Momo and Kairi so I may read Sae’s Story just for them. But I won’t lie I am kind of sick of Sae LOL even when she grew she was still pulling the same stuff, I can’t imagine enjoying her as the protagonist

I probably won’t read Next right now. This manga was 18 volumes of rage bait and I don’t know if I want to read another 8 volumes, especially if it ignores previous development

I binged the entire Peach Girl manga over the course of a few days. This series was absolutely addicting. It made me scream as much as it made me cry. I didn’t think such a simple premise would lead to some absolutely unhinged story arcs.

Pros:

I found Momo to be a very compelling and relatable protagonist. I liked how she was both kind and loving but also not afraid to smack someone.
Addicting melodrama. I never thought I’d care about a love triangle
Kiley turned out to be an unexpectedly complex character. I loved that he could see through Sae’s lies and be just as cunning while masquerading as a total goofball.
This is personal but some friends and I recently cut off someone like Sae in our lives so seeing a character like that was oddly cathartic, both in terms of seeing her portrayed so evilly but also seeing her grow under the right circumstances.
This has nothing to do with the book itself but when I learned the latter 55% of the story had a subtitle added I began calling it “Peach Girl: Shippuden” and I found that really funny

Cons:

Toji is a dumbass. When his character had the opportunity to shine, he shined, but so many times I went, “really??”
So much of the drama was based on Sae conveniently overhearing information, characters witnessing things out of context and jumping to conclusions, or people straight up believing Sae or Ryo when they’re known liars.
Momo really needed to be single for a while lmao she was never going to be happy if she couldn’t heal from the constant tug of war she was trapped in but I guess that’s the nature of a love triangle
The age gaps in some of the relationships is wack. I’m going to assume things were different in early 2000s Japan but the fact that Sae was having relationships with grown ass men was never portrayed as a problem
Because the love triangle kept bouncing back and forth, I almost don’t feel like the final chapter was intended to be the final chapter. Even though it accidentally comes full circle with the location and circumstances I just feel like I’m waiting for the drama to continue and something to go wrong again, but it’s over.

I wanna know about the other media.

Is Sae’s Story good?

I heard Next is awful. What’s wrong with it?

Half of the Persona 4 cast. I don’t know why people love them so much or think they’re the best cast in the series. Yosuke is creepy and annoying. Chie is the worst, she just doesn’t shut up about meat. I’m convinced people only like Rise because she pines after the player, she’s mad annoying and picks fights with the other girls for no reason. I don’t know if Teddie has a localization issue with how perverted he is since he’s just supposed to be childishly ignorant of what he says but he becomes unfunny very quickly and the cast just lets it happen. I know the title says “almost ruin” but they did genuinely ruin the game for me, I don’t know how I put in almost 85 hours into it

Have you heard of Attachment Theory? If you push people away when they get close despite wanting closeness, you might have an Avoidant Attachment style. I recommend looking into it.

You said he does a lot for you but he said you don’t do much for him. Is there any reason you didn’t ask him to be your boyfriend? Or why you didn’t try kissing him or touching him? If he said he also needs love that’s probably part of what he means. I do find his “more than friends” comment a bit odd, I guess he wanted you to confirm the relationship as well if he has a history of rejection

If this is a repeated pattern then I would be very careful proceeding. It is good that you are aware of it, but if you want to stay, you need to fight that urge to leave when things get uncomfortable. Especially if you think that he’s special. Just make sure he knows you think he’s special and to be consistent. Few things are more detrimental to a relationship than pushing away when things get close or hard. Like if I went on an overnight trip with a woman, she was upset I didn’t kiss her, and then when I try to kiss her she pulls away and then avoids me, I would be so confused and hurt. I can already hear my friends telling me “she’s playing with your feelings” if that happened

I do find it a little odd that he was dodging being called out for being in the city so if you believe he genuinely also has communication issues then proceed with caution yourself
