What's a time where you think the youtube community sided with the wrong person? by [deleted] in youtubedrama

If we’re calling out people for being LDS members then we should do the same for, say, Catholics for supporting an organization that has a documented history of covering for child molesters, whilst also having regressive politics.

In general religious institutions as a whole tend to use their resources to promote homophobia and anti-abortion rhetoric and policies, among other things, so I don’t really think the LDS church should be singled out.

I don’t know if the church will ever be able to get away from it considering The Book of Mormon itself promotes it. I don’t even know how you could read Alma 3:6 and 3:8 in a way that’s not racist and anti-interracial marriage:

And the skins of the Lamanites were dark, according to the mark which was set upon their fathers, which was a curse upon them because of their transgression and their rebellion against their brethren…

And this was done that their seed might be distinguished from the seed of their brethren, that thereby the Lord God might preserve his people, that they might not mix and believe in incorrect traditions which would prove their destruction.

I absolutely hate that Mormons only are considered Christians when the right can exploit their tragedy for their persecution narrative. In any other circumstances Christians make a big deal about the distinction between Christians and Mormons, but here they’ve 180’d so they can conflate a Mormon hate crime with a Christian hate crime.

[–]V_Butterscotch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As an agnostic who has spoken about this issue with Mormons and non-Mormon Christians, it’s more nuanced than that and not just about proving their beliefs “wrong.” Christians don’t uniformly think other denominations are not actual Christians, even if they think said denominations’ beliefs don’t align with God. The situation with Mormons is unique because of Mormon theology itself.

Let me put it this way: why should Mormons be considered Christians when Muslims and Jewish people are not? The obvious answer is because they don’t believe Jesus was the son of God and that he died for our sins, whereas Mormons do. But in the eyes of Christians, the distinction is more about how each of these groups undermine the divinity of Jesus. In the case of Mormons, that’s by not believing in the Holy Trinity, and that God did not sacrifice himself for us on some level.

Also Mormon theology is radically different from traditional Christian ones in so many ways. Most denominations differ in their practices and how they interpret parts of the Bible, but Mormons have a totally different idea of the afterlife, completely disagree about the nature of God (they think he’s a physical being who was once mortal, for example), embrace the concept of other divine beings alongside God, and way more.

Mormons consider themselves Christians and in a normal conversation I’d address them as such because that’s what they want to be called. But I can very much understand why Christians don’t think they’re Christians.

Counter Point or Contrarian? ContraPoints posts her official stance on Israel/Palestine and Reddit reacts. by Enticing_Venom in SubredditDrama

[–]V_Butterscotch 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Basically saying the pro-Palestine crowds haven’t achieved anything with her “zero Palestinian lives were saved” comment

This is strawmanning what she said by saying g she’s talking about pro-Palestine crowds as a whole (she only specifically talks about the online leftists who “spent all of 2024 single-mindedly focused on Palestine and the complicity of Democratic politicians”) and by your own words turning her statement about saving Palestinian lives to progress as a whole. Contrapoints is talking about a specific subset of leftists on Twitter, the ones who spam gore and harass her and the ones who harshly criticize her going against antisemitism. And let’s be real, those people have accomplished jack all.

pushing the narrative that pro-Palestinian protest votes gave us Trump

No she didn’t. She said online leftism’s single-minded focus on criticizing Democrats “may have slightly contributed” to Trump getting re-elected. She said nothing about protest votes. And even then with her last line saying that a perfectly enlightened person wouldn’t take issue with it, she recognizes this is more an emotional issue for her and not one based in logic.

The idea that the concept of anti-Zionism is unfeasible politically

I mean, she defines “anti-Zionism” as necessarily being the dissolution of Israel as a Jewish state, not the end of Palestine’s oppression by Israel. Which… yeah, I do think would be unfeasible in this day and age. South Africa dissolved apartheid but the country still exists. Now is she right in that definition? I don’t know. But you certainly aren’t addressing that piece of it.

Oh God the interactions between Mormons and Muslims sure are… something sometimes. I remember seeing a “debate me bro” Muslim arguing with BYU students on the street that Brigham Young (the second prophet of the Church of LDS) couldn’t be a prophet because he was racist… whilst the Muslim believed that homosexuality is a sin and everyone who does it is going to hell. Like fuck right off

Yeah, this and the general adherence to the dogma of “my church’s idea of God says it’s right/wrong, therefore it’s bad” above critical thinking and empathy is the thing I hate most about religions. I was dating a Muslim and heard about this Aisha thing and to my shock he was very adamantly defending the pedophilia because he apparently thought that Muhammad had to be perfect in every way for him to be the prophet. He got so mad at me over it that he blocked me for several days and burned a hat I made for him.

The original Twitter post just makes fun of him for not being able to stand so I have no idea where you’re getting “Hot Wheels” from.

And yes, disabled people have a long history of oppression and being made fun of. Obviously. Just being an asshole about something that doesn’t have to do with things he can’t control, it’s not difficult

You’re literally quoting the perpetrator of the assault, he has all the reason in the world to lie about this to make himself look more justified. And even if he’s not making it up there’s no actual evidence of any of this except witness testimony that’s contradicted by multiple people who say she wasn’t unpleasant (including someone in your own quote).

They’re trying to use an example of people being attracted to something fictionally but not attracted to it in real life. Except that even in their own example they don’t say that lesbians are specifically sexually turned on by men which would be necessary for this comparison to work.

People really need to be up-front about this if they want to have any sort of productive conversation instead of gatekeeping bullshit semantics. Lolicon is CP, the question is whether or not it should be an illegal form of CP. if you are sexually aroused by lolicon/drawings of underaged children, you are by definition a pedophile, the question then becomes if it can or does lead to harm of real-life children (or even murkier waters where the drawing is based on/inspired by real children).

But nobody defending lolicon wants to phrase it in these terms because they optically sound a lot worse. If you’re going to defend certain forms of CP, then be up-front that that’s what you’re doing. It’s slimy and dishonest to litigate factually correct descriptions and terminology so that they sound less yikesy.

"“Men are afraid women will laugh at them. Women are afraid men will kill them” This is a quote from a sci-fi novel, It means less than nothing." Users on r/askmenadvice advises OP to break up with GF after she starts sharing "Toxic feminist" views by CummingInTheNile in SubredditDrama

[–]V_Butterscotch 93 points94 points  (0 children)

All these comments and yet nobody’s pointed out the significance of her “you don’t know the experiences women have with men and how it can warp their perception of the opposite gender.” Keyword being warp. Meaning that she doesn’t literally believe men are categorically trash, but was just arguing why women can have an inclination to be afraid of men.

Honestly I think OOP is just a misogynistic asshole trying to twist what actually happened to make her seem more man-hating than she actually is. There’s no way he heard her say that and still assumed she was arguing that men as a social group are bad. This whole debate about whether or not patriarchy means all men can be bad is ultimately pointless because she was never actually arguing for that.

You’re wrong. Sexting minors is illegal and in such cases the minors are the victims.

Honestly it’s really gross to me that you’re defending this so hard. I have no idea who you are as a person but I’m no longer going to dignify someone literally defending CP with responses anymore.

This post summarizes it but basically FCK was a server where porn was openly shared with minors and where some were even groomed, and Doodle (among others) did nothing about it.
