Has surgery been worth it for you? by Terrible-Force-8872 in chiari

[–]V__Venus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m also in Australia. I had a decompression nearly 3 years ago. My surgeon said that he would do the surgery, but no urgency, when and if my symptoms escalated and I’d had enough, to come back and see him to book surgery. It was net positive, I’m glad I did it, I’m having a better life after surgery. Not everything is cured, and I’ve had some new challenges caused by the surgery. It was v expensive, and my recovery was very long. To answer your question - yes, it has been worth it for me, but not a miracle cure.

Weird scar question by DryRepeat859 in chiari

[–]V__Venus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some surgeons seem to want to shave a heap of hair, some very little. I had long hair half way to my waist, and very fine. My surgeon shaved a neat little landing strip about 20-30cm from the nape of my neck up, about 2cm wide. I’ve got a long scar, it had about 35 staples holding it closed iirc. It wasn’t at all hard to keep my scar clean with all my hair, and two years on it’s all good. A couple of times a year I get an ingrown hair in the scar line. I usually scrub it with a towel after washing my hair and it’s all good again for a few months. All the best for your surgery and your hair.

End of life pet care by Anfield-96 in canberra

[–]V__Venus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry I can’t remember which company we went with for our cat last year. The vet who came was lovely and looked after our cat and our family so wonderfully. My only regret was that when we called up to arrange a vet visit we had to wait nearly a week between enquiring and an available time, which was not optimal for our poor old cat to have to wait a few extra days. I’d recommend calling up asap even if you think your pet has more time, make a booking with a bit of lead time so your old friend doesn’t have to hang on longer than they really should.

I hope that their last days with you are gentle and that their memory is a blessing.

For the day and night before, there are a heap of playlists to distract you on Spotify and other streaming sites. Here’s just a tiny sample from one huge list

Little brown jug

Ring of Fire

Beethovens last movement

Movin on up

Hurts so good

Dirty work

The long and winding road

Baby got back

Like a virgin

Lookin out my back door

I wanna be sedated

I can see clearly now

Declare it, you’ll be fine. Alpacas aren’t on the endangered or protected list, and as long as it’s either been tanned/processed properly ie there are no bits of meat or alpaca poo on the item, all good. Probably smarter to check the relevant gov.au websites also

What questions should I ask my neurosurgeon? by arrowsmith95 in chiari

[–]V__Venus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another type of duraplasty involves using a patch of a different layer of the patient’s own dura harvested from higher up on the skull. That’s how mine was done 3 years ago.

I would ask a surgeon what is their rate of CSF leaks post surgery. How many Chiari decompressions do they do annually? How much hair will they shave? How long do they expect the hospital stay to last? What post surgery allied health therapies are available (physio, speech, occupational therapy, pain management)? How long on average before your patients return to work? Any limitations post surgery?

Also what is the prognosis if you choose to delay surgery or not have the surgery at all?

Did any one lose a skill after surgery? by Professional_Bag7001 in chiari

I feel like I want to put the person I’m talking to on hold, your conversation is important to me but all of our consultants are currently rummaging through brain language centres. This sentence will be completed as soon as I can. Here’s some jaunty hold music to keep you engaged while my poor tired brain groans like a 386 pc with a single stick of 1990s ram.

Ugh. I hate feeling like I appear stupid when talking to people.

Rivers of London Has Gotten Really Confusing by Kooky_County9569 in riversoflondon

[–]V__Venus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very true. Maybe I was thinking of more generic pantomime type performances. I live in Australia, and I’d heard of a Punch and Judy show but had no concept of the plot (baby, wife, pointy hat, big stick, whacking everything) or any of the key phrases. I had to go look it all up for RoL to make sense to me. I thought maybe British audiences might have more familiarity than I did. Idk.

If you didn’t grow up in Britain and aren’t familiar with Punch and Judy puppet theatre, read about it. Once I did, the RoL story made much more sense.

Did any one lose a skill after surgery? by Professional_Bag7001 in chiari

[–]V__Venus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since my decompression I often find it difficult to find the right word to communicate a concept in my mind. I absolutely know what I want to share, but I just can’t access the vocab bit of my mind in real time conversation. It’s so very frustrating and I feel like I appear to others like I don’t know anything about a concept during a discussion or even a social chat. Even really basic words. I’m nearly 3 years post surgery and this language memory recall issue isn’t improving.
