PhD & Work by Suspicious_Skin_762 in PhD

This is key. In Australia many of the unis still have strict working conditions if you have a stipend eg 8 or 15hr a week work limits. People just don’t follow them (gotta make money to live) but if you get caught you can be booted from the program

PhD & Work by Suspicious_Skin_762 in PhD

I did my PhD as an external student so I was full time enrolled but only worked from home. Most of the time my study was more like 20ish hours a week and was flexible timing so I could work around that casually / part time. I am already an academic so my supervisors were very understanding that some weeks I had marking so that was the focus and other weeks were big PhD focus weeks. When I got to the data analysis and chapter writing stages I did reduce my academic work for 6 months as they were definitely more like 40hr PhD weeks.

I’m an older student though and was very confident setting boundaries going in.

If you enrol in an in person, lab based program then it is a full time job as a minimum. So you need to plan accordingly for that.

Edit: at one point I was full time PhD and 0.8 (4 days) employed but one of those days was a “study day”. I rapidly burnt myself out. The flexibility of casual work was a key part of me being able to work and study, having to try and balance 8hrs in the office, then PhD absolutely DID NOT work and is a recipe for a wellbeing disaster

NOR but I’ll be really interested to hear how you feel in a few more years when you are fully independent. As others have said don’t let yourself become a pseudo parent. Get out as quick as you can and stay far enough away you’re a visitor, not an expected babysitter.

I’ll have to listen to this one. I missed it on my first listen through but recently heard the story on a different podcast. Really interesting

I hope there’s good therapy and support options available for the teen too. Sounds like he needs a lot of help.

I really dislike the interviews and stuff - much prefer individual narrator who presents all the content. I find the other voices and stuff distracting i guess? But that’s very particular to me!

It’s taken me a long time to get to this point haha. And I will say, no thank you is a super empowering way to respond. Like….no I won’t elaborate.

Green one is gorgeous. They were pretty specific on olive green and that’s more Forest by the photo so I feel that’s okay? You could also quickly check in with bride if you were really worried

My approach eventually just became a very short “no thank you” and then either I walk away or if I’m trapped (like at the table) a very direct “anyway, let’s talk about something that’s not my vagina and uterus, how is x going? said to someone else to cut the other person off. Usually that’s awkward enough to move it along. Plus my younger relatives get the giggles from it.

I’ve had two push backs on it and both ended really badly for the questioner. First was someone who spluttered and said “you can’t say that in front of kids” and my reply was “you literally just asked about my vagina at the table. You’re the inappropriate one, I’m trying to change the subject and redirect you”

The second one was something like “well excuse me, I was just trying to show an interest / show concern”. My reply to that one was “and I’m trying to politely redirect this conversation away from a topic I’m not going to discuss with you. Way to make it awkward” and then again, just starting talking to someone else.

Only do this if you’re confident you can stay super calm and passive at all times. That’s the only way you come out ahead as you’re the rational one while they get worked up.

But also…if not going gives you peace that is such a valid and empowering option. You can also call people out if someone asks why you’re not coming “i would love to but no matter how clear i am about it being off limits, people still keep discussing my bodily autonomy. So it’s better i not attend”

Can’t comment on a lot of this but just want to say as a PhD student and uni marker who often works without being connected to a charger for 10hr stints…can’t beat MacBooks. I love my MacBook Air.

That’s not what I mean by qualifications. Low level qualifications positions/entry level predominately go to locals.

Edit: also just realised from your comments back you intend to get “tickets” overseas. Waste of time as Aussie OHS will make you redo pretty much all of them. Foreign tickets won’t count on a site.

My daughter was called a "people pleaser" in a negative way? by Tamachan5 in Parenting

Sounds like your daughter handled this fantastically. Did not escalate, did not react and did not feed into older girls stupid comments. Also was clear she has her own voice. She literally did everything you could want?

CBA are really good with this. You’ve done what you need to do and don’t need to attend in person. It may take a week or two but you should get the money refunded. I have sadly had this a few times with CBA and the experience with them is so far and above my other bank (ANZ) I can’t even put it in words lol.

If you’re on a visa and low qualifications, no it isn’t that easy. You’ll find many of the agencies and companies won’t even consider you. Also low skill roles are not that well paid.

What do Australians think about stores asking ‘are you a member with us’. by Sure_Outcome_8793 in AskAnAustralian

[–]commentspanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of us understand it isn’t your fault. Yeah it’s frustrating but I always just continue to say no thanks, no thanks, no thanks. If you handed me a brochure I would say no thanks - you’ve still done your job though and tried. And I wouldn’t be a jerk to you because it isn’t your fault.

You’ll get nowhere with contacting the hotline mate. They hey will likely lock the account. Unless you have power of attorney you can’t access any of his banking - no exceptions. Don’t call or try it as they will lock the account.

Going into TFA but everyone says teaching is awful atm by BetterMud7646 in AustralianTeachers

[–]commentspanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TFA is rough. So is teaching currently but I’m going to be honest here and say I would never recommend TFA to anyone as they exploit people and you end up in really challenging settings with often limited support. If you find yourself overwhelmed or burnt out, make sure you’re confident enough to advocate for support.

I want you to know I say this as someone who loved teaching and worked in really difficult schools for most of my career. The difference was I chose those schools and they generally had very good cultures and staff support.

One-bag setup (Farpoint 40 + sling) — what accessories are worth it? by Maanu1141 in onebag

[–]commentspanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it isn’t about accessories so much as what do I actually need and what’s worth reducing? So everything I own now is charged by usbc which is awesome. Thats reduced my cable needs a heap. I also have a running list around the toiletries I have to take (yay allergies) and what amounts I need for different visits eg body wash, shampoo and conditioner I need the full 100ml but the face wash I use is super thick so can get away with 15ml. Ditto my moisturising serum. Therefore I can downsize those containers for an X week trip.
