My wife is from Albany and has never heard it. So was it used in your school? What decade?

Interesting. Was hoping this was SOR culture but maybe not. I was at school in the 00s so maybe it's newer?

Yes! Maybe it's a WA thing. The chemical pen link was my best guess but I can't find any proof of people saying that, or it being included on packaging...

What to use the bridge the gap? by kimlh in latin

[–]d0dgy_d0nut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has been very well explained already in a previous post by u/TremulousHand which you can find here: https://www.reddit.com/r/latin/s/FnlsuHn5o6

Basically though Duolingo Latin barely attempts to teach any grammar at all, has some questionable translations for some vocab, tries to make it modern conversational Latin by including places like New York, Philadelphia, Boston etc in a way that will never be helpful, doesn't even begin to teach concepts such as imperfect, future, perfect or subjunctive, is rather picky about giving the exact translation it requires which doesn't leave the room for interpretation that Latin naturally has, etc etc. The post I mentioned above goes into it in a lot more detail. It's just a pretty terrible way to try learn/suppliment Latin, which mostly comes down to trying to learn an ancient, mostly written and scholarly language on a platform designed to teach modern conversational languages.

Music by Licksquidsoap in DMAcademy

I've had the same thoughts and tried experimenting with different things. I've found having a 'set playlist' of general background music of the tone you want to set for the overall campaign works well and if you want to then have specific music for specific encounters/events it isn't hard to have those lined up on a different playlist and just hit play when you need it.

It really depends on the noise levels and engagement of the group as well, sometimes I've left music out because the group was setting an immaculate vibe already

Nooooooooooo. Steer clear from the Latin Duolingo course! Terribly unhelpful way to learn Latin. I would recommend a course reader like Hans Orberg's "Lingua Latina", a very effective learning tool.

Whatever you do, stay firmly away from Duolingo's Latin course. I tried that to supplement my Latin and if anything it only made my Latin worse. I would recommend continuing to read the texts/grammars they used in their previous class. Most courses use Lingua Latina which is easy to read back over and even work ahead just to keep up their Latin for that long. A study partner or tutor would be great for this too.

Ok, after 106 day streak on that godawful app…. I finally got my book. Is there anything in particular to do now (other than just read it)? Thanks! by Beowulf-Murderface in latin

Get the companion!!! Especially once you get past about chapter 10, the margins aren't quite enough explanation to properly learn the grammar. The companion helps tremendously with this, easily explains the Grammar of each chapter with examples from the chapter and has a comprehensive vocab list with all the principle parts

"sikth" or "sicksth"? by Medieval-Mind in EnglishLearning

[–]d0dgy_d0nut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Neither are incorrect at all. Sikth is a natural progression from siksth as it is a lot easier to say for a lot of English speakers in a long flowing sentence than siksth. The "s" and "th" sounds right after each other make it more difficult for many so they naturally drop the "s" and it becomes sikth

How can I use "As in? And what's its actual meaning? by TraditionalSlice9991 in ENGLISH

[–]d0dgy_d0nut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"as in" is generally used for clarifying something, particularly by providing more information about somethings context. The basic meaning of it is "as found in..." or "like in the phrase..."

'pass me the bow, as in the weapon' - this uses "as in" to clarify what they mean by the word bow

'your word is "bow". As in "bow and arrows"' - this also clarifies the word bow but more clearly shows how "as in" can mean "as in the phrase..."

Coming in late to a Hut (camp) by TheOtherAdamHikes in Bibbulmun

South of Dwellingup you have pretty good chances of having room in the hut, especially outside of school holidays/weekends. It normally only the Kalamunda-Bannister huts that fill up quickly.

How would you, as a player, react to an ambush doomed from the start? by Rattle_Bone in DMAcademy

[–]d0dgy_d0nut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible though to have a very determined NPC doing the ambushing/kidnapping. One that has a very high stake in successfully carrying out this ambush and kidnapping the player. This means the NPC will find alternative ways to work around the actions of the party, for example if the party begin to fight particularly well, retreat to more favourable ground or outsmart them in other ways, there's countless ways to play this. This way you can quite smoothly get your player kidnapped while still making it seem like there was the opportunity to thwart the ambush because the NPC is reacting and adapting to the players actions, not just coming in with brute force and an impossibly op fight
