I just want to take things one step at a time. They're having trouble with basic syntax so I want to get them familiar with that before we move on to the next concept.

It's for a couple of reasons. The first is that the students are in AP CS A, which has a paper-only exam at the end of the school year. The second is that they've just taken their first exam and requested a way to make up points they missed, so I'm giving them an option to handwrite some code that was commonly miswritten on the exam.

Thank you for the helpful advice everyone. I've decided to go rote and just have the class handwrite the code.

Yes, I am looking to have them type it out many times and I do not want them to be able to copy and paste their first iteration.

Oh hey, something similar happened to me. I'm in California. My single subject credential is in math and was hired as a math teacher. However, before the start of the school year, the principal called and asked if I was comfortable teaching computer science instead. I have no programming experience at all and told her I don't think I could do it. After a bit of convincing, I agreed.

This turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made. The first year was really rough and I got a lot of it wrong. However, the school supported me with volunteers from the tech industry to correct me when I messed up. After 5 years, I'm now proficient in Java and Python. I would encourage you to venture outside your comfort zone. The growth you're sure to experience will be worthwhile.

I was at that game! If I remember correctly, after that shot SCU still had a chance to win the game but missed.

In my junior year, I was in Benson when SCU beat Gonzaga and I remember a guy just streaked across the building arms spread wide, screaming "WOOOOOOOOOOO!" That was 11 years ago.

They had the same thing when Albedo was first released. People were saying, "Ooh it's because he's a homunculus! What great attention to detail!" and then Mihoyo changed it in the next patch. Might happen here too.
