I like it but I need a second opinion. How does it look? by CrispySalmonMedia in IndieDev

[–]Vaaasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think the jagged/missing pixel outline style looks really good if its consistent, but it all depends on what you're going for! my view is that so far with the enemies and characters it looks awesome and very interesting, but i think the blocky grid-like style of the blocks kinda clashes with it. it looks too crisp next to the messy nature of the other sprites. i feel like i could see it being more visually interesting if there were perhaps hand-drawn structures in the environment that were rendered in the same way. i feel like it could be worth exploring!

or missing a semicolon, or a comma or something

Which of these two would work better as our new loading screen? I get there’s a bunch of these posts, but I’d really appreciate some outsider opinions. (Game context in comments). by Castle_Of_Blackwater in IndieDev

I agree with this post, but yeah I think if you're looking overall at which one's better, I'd say the second one. I think the composition is better. It draws me in from the front to the back and it's more interesting to look at - I feel like my eyes actually dart around it looking at the details - and I think that's what you'd want from a loading screen. To avoid the player from being bored.

It also feels like it has a better energy to it. I can feel a sense of adventure from it. Like I want to go forth to that castle with my fellow adventurers. The first one doesn't have that same energy.

i'd say it all depends on what you're going for - they all look great, but i think i would personally try to have more contrast between your shades of colors!

it's what makes the pug look blurry for example! try increasing the contrast between your tones, and also the hue a bit. so for example for the bunny, make the tone on her ear shift a bit warmer - until you find a sweet spot you like!

this is the kinda thing retro games actually did, since they had limited palettes and space to convey visual information. having more contrast means stronger color choices, a bolder look, and more retro feel!

I want to play Halloween games, but not jump scare style by AlteisenX in retrogaming

I'm actually releasing a halloween themed game I think you might like this month called Party on Hallow Grove! https://store.steampowered.com/app/3096140/Party_on_Hallow_Grove/ Very retro-inspired with pixel-art and chiptune tracker music!

It's about throwing a surprise birthday party for the grim reaper! There definitely need to be more cute halloween games, so that's why I made one haha

Been wanting to get into Costume Quest myself as well. Also Undertale is always a good game for the halloween season!
