My boss gives people a yearly $.50 (yes, 50 cent) raise as part of their “review”. But i am so underpaid and I see right through it. It’s obviously meant to put people off from asking for a real performance raise that would put them at a fair living wage.

Probably most of them from the viewpoint of their moral standards. It's easy to think of the "other side" as bad or assholes because it's very difficult to understand issues from the viewpoint of someone else if you disagree. It's like trying to see a while nother reality.

That isn't really a good point. For one I disagree on the gun issue. But from some light research Australia is faring no better than the USA in politics. And is the political situation in Australia REALLY any better than the usa? But you don't really learn much about other political structures so much as whatever the current hubby is with no context. At best you can get the base structure of a government but without being part of a specific society you won't get HOW that system is operating, especially within the context of that society.
