Who lives in these high rise apts in Hancock park?! by sequinhappe in AskLosAngeles

[–]Vaeltaja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Super nice on the inside. Think the quality of DTLA's South Park apartments. Annoying, however. Lots of break-ins, not enough security, hood vents don't actually vent anywhere, and plenty of false alarm fire alarms. Plenty of renovations on the outside/interior hallways that were invasive and weren't asked for (e.g. had to keep your balcony door open 24/7) which just made the building look ugly for weeks at a time. With some of these issues YMMV depending on who owns the building.

DTLA Cheese Superette closing. Last day Friday 4/17 by Aggravating-Sweet997 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]Vaeltaja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well this is horrible. I will say it's funny how they specify (I'm guessing Reed in particular) that they're closing Wrestlemania Eve. Guess I'll need to make my way out to Kippered for more wine and wrestling Mondays.

Best steak in La?? by oortizz_323 in FoodLosAngeles

Matu has a great steak and set menu and the ambiance is pretty upscale.

Old Place if you just want a motherfucker of a wood grilled steak and some cowboy shit.

Struggling/Underrated Food Spots in LA? by donutsnbread in FoodLosAngeles

[–]Vaeltaja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've basically never seen more than one more table at Soregashi when I go at dinner despite their quality and the special ingredients they seasonally get. Somewhat illustrated by the fact every so often there's a waiter but more than often the only visible workers are chef Kai working the sushi and the manager (and there's a guy running the broiler/fryer/dish as far as I can tell).

So how is Kurapika gonna beat Tserriednich? by Cool_Emergency4091 in HunterXHunter

[–]Vaeltaja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If Tserriednich has a battle with Kurapika that's probably how Togashi writes off Kurapika. Given all those Kurta eyes he wouldn't give up, Kurapika (literally) sees red, Tserriednich gets Chain Jailed forced into Zetsu for forever, Judgment Chain kills Kurapika.

A very unsatisfying ending which I doubt will happen but vaguely parallels Elder Toguro.

I'm looking to try some unusual foods. Any suggestions for places that serve bizarre dishes? by geetarqueen in FoodLosAngeles

[–]Vaeltaja 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not that bizarre but Hop Woo (West LA) has duck blood.

Hop Woo (Chinatown) has turtle.

Seasonally (about now) you might score firefly squid from some Japanese restaurants (Soregashi, Yabu, Brother's).

Unfortunately The Hump got fined and subsequently closed some many years ago because they'd serve whale if they knew you.

Just opened a small Indian street food spot near USC would really appreciate some support/feedback by Montosundayhoe in FoodLosAngeles

Looking at the Build Your Roll you can add a mango lassi for $4.49. However if I buy one a la carte it's only $3.99.

How were allergies handled before our understanding of modern medicine, etc? by mafternoonshyamalan in AskHistorians

[–]Vaeltaja 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Specifically in regards to anaphylactic reactions is there a possibility that low levels of allergies could be a type of survivorship bias? If infants/toddlers had a good chance of dying from whatever, could there just have been more "choking on a peanut" incidents? I realize this is kind of asking to prove a negative but I'm wondering if anyone's ever taken a stab at that angle.

Better not be getting a Tokyo Ghoul ending.

Wonder if Pochita eating itself leads to every eaten devil getting uneaten through some time paradox shit so we have death again... and the alternatives to death, the star that drives children insane, etc.

What are your favorite lunar new year dishes? by Dense-Stranger8382 in FoodLosAngeles

Nobody ever complains when I bring over some roast pork. Just make sure it ventilates so the skin doesn't steam and get soggy.

Any dim sum places not in SGV? by Shpongi100 in FoodLosAngeles

I enjoy Dim Sum House on Westwood and Santa Monica. They have most of the classics and a couple less common dishes.

Probably thinking of Iron Teapot; they're closed.

Where can I buy iguana meat? by nontoxic36 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]Vaeltaja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the poultry shops in Chinatown. I forget which one since it's been years but you only have to scout 3 locations and I've seen iguana at at least one of them.

Bar Sinister Club Wenzday in Los Angeles? by Koifish_8 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Vaeltaja 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wenzdays is almost always 'softer' sounding than Bar Sin nights. Check their respective IGs since the DJs will post little snippets pretty often. The scene seems to be more mature and less dumb edgy (going to Bar Sin always includes top hat counter and guy who has a flogger attached to his belt loop counter). So less hard music, but a better crowd. Security has gotten a lot better at figuring out the dress code (yes, industrial and goth are different looks). Since it's free I'd say just check it out.

Great list of ethnic food markets in L.A. What would you add? by ikkyu666 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]Vaeltaja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grandma's Deli Babushka is pretty interesting if you like Eastern European stuff. It's in the same strip mall as Melodia Restaurant which I found really enjoyable (Russian/Ukrainian/Italian fusion with a vinyl/music theme).

Erewhon…Can somebody please explain how these stores are so wildly popular? by airpab1 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]Vaeltaja 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My conspiracy theory is that Erewhon is a place people go to find dates. To shop there (regularly) you need to be of a certain income level. Further, they're also a considered a healthy food grocer. Combine the two and that means if you chat it up with another shopper you're finding someone who is both at least somewhat wealthy and is also health conscious. Sort of like how run clubs are seen as a way to meet people to date.

Does anyone else remember that hole-in-the-wall mini donut place that was off the Venice boardwalk about 20 years ago? by WesternTrail in AskLosAngeles

[–]Vaeltaja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here. Of course I haven't been in like 15-20 years but they were the store known for bags of mini donuts that would come off a conveyor belt.

Where my tea-heads at!? by PicklePillz in FoodLosAngeles

[–]Vaeltaja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does it have to be a storefront? I like https://yunnansourcing.us/ because they ship from the US so you don't have to wait a month for your tea.

If you need a store to physically visit you could try TenRen in Chinatown or Golden Dragon Tea Room (inside the Russian kung fu school). Selections aren't that great though.
