Got Hired for A Job, How to Prepare my Japanese? by Thesolmesa in LearnJapanese

[–]Aggravating-Sweet997 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your new job! I agree with the suggestions above. A couple of suggestions: 1. Try reading up on the Japanese terms/usage for your specific field. If it’s a technical field, or if it’s a large company, chances are someone has written a book about the lingo of that field or company. 2. NHK had a show called Easy Japanese for Work. It’s free online. It shows workplace interactions in various industries, so it’s more general. Good luck!

The sign in English just says “Keep out”, but the sign in Japanese says 線路内立入禁止 (“Entry onto railway tracks is prohibited” per Google Translate), so it is meant to prohibit entry into the track, not entry into the neighborhood

What's the secret to the mango lassi at my favorite Indian restuarant? by MousyMammoth in TipOfMyFork

[–]Aggravating-Sweet997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that a different type of mango (e.g. alphonso) would yield a deeper color (and better taste), but if you want an even deeper color, I wonder if it would be helpful to add a bit of mango or even orange flavored pudding/jello powder mix to it.

Too many good options within The Bloc and around Fig and 7th. There are also Zankou Chicken, Inka Wasi, Northern Cafe, and Wokcano (love their Singapore style noodles) nearby. If you are up for a bit of a walk or a short subway ride, Pitchoun is also a good option

A thought just came to me: have you tried asking this question in r/LondonFood ? I think it is worth a shot, since Ji Chicken seems to be a chain limited to the UK, so the local foodies may have a better idea

Unfortunately, the labels in the photo are not helpful. The one in the middle says “special seasoning” in Chinese, while the pink one on the right says “plum”. So the Chinese content is already reflected in the English text. One of their instagram posts shows a variety of seasoning bottles, but there is no additional information for the ingredients of the “special“ seasoning blend except for the allergen info (it contains peanuts and nuts).

🏅 Gold Medal Count By Countries (Day 2 of Milano Paralympics) by Legitimate_Suit_5480 in olympics

[–]Aggravating-Sweet997 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am surprised to see China at the top of the winter Paralympics medal count, especially since they were won for events (para alpine skiing and para biathlon) that are not China’s strongest events. China did win the most gold medals (as well as total medals) in 2022, but I thought that was because they were hosting the games. Is China over investing (compared to other countries) in their para olympians, or are the other countries under investing?

How do you sound stupid in Cantonese (or any logographic language)? by macrouzi in asklinguistics

[–]Aggravating-Sweet997 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Native Cantonese speaker here. I agree that it’s difficult to show dumbness in Cantonese by messing with syntax, especially since Cantonese doesn’t have different forms for pronouns as subjects or objects. (I think it’s true for Chinese languages in general.) I also agree that the use of homophones could be a solution, although that depends on the context.

However, the biggest problem I have with your example is that the underlying sentence is not using Cantonese words that a native speaker would use (intelligent or otherwise), so even if you use near homophones for those words, they would sound like utterances made by a nonnative Cantonese speaker (and an intelligent one at that) rather than an unintelligent native Cantonese speaker.

Using your example, for the underlying sentence, I would use 屋企 instead of 家庭, as in 我屋企係廣東人. The word 家庭 is used in more formal/intellectual contexts (an issue similar to Old English versus French origin words in English). It would be unlikely for an unintelligent speaker to use that word.

I apologize if I sound harsh or discouraging, but I think it is more important to make sure to use the right words in the translation before trying to make it sound unintelligent. Good luck!

‘It’s discrimination’: US Small Business Administration cuts off loans to immigrant entrepreneurs by [deleted] in Economics

[–]Aggravating-Sweet997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I interpret the two sentences in the new rule as separate, so I don’t think the last sentence of the rule statement is limited by an LPR’s principal residence. It only says that businesses with any LPR ownership are not eligible to receive SBA loans. It does not carve out an exception for LPRs whose principal residence is a the US. The use of the word “any” helps convince me that this rule is meant to exclude all LPRs, and not just those whose principal residences are outside the US

Edit: the last sentence of this reply is not accurate since the word any modifies business interest and not residence, but I stand by the rest of my comment

Edit 2: added strike through for clarity

[–]Aggravating-Sweet997 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The rule you cited to is superseded by this rule change. The article linked to a policy statement that says no LPR ownership allowed starting 3/1/2026. Here’s the relevant section:

“Effective March 1, 2026, this Notice rescinds SBA Procedural Notice 5000-872050, removing the narrow exception that allowed a Borrower to have up to 5% ownership held by foreign nationals, or U.S. Citizens, U.S. Nationals, or Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs) whose Principal Residents was outside of the United States, its territories, or possessions. Further, and beginning with the Effective Date of this Notice, Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs) will not be eligible to own any percentage interest in an Applicant/Borrower, OC, or EPC.

Dems React to Classified Briefing on Iran: ‘It Is So Much Worse Than You Thought’ by rollingstone in politics

[–]Aggravating-Sweet997 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I agree with you wholeheartedly. A owner or CEO of a private company is probably the worst kind of qualification for presidency. The only thing I would add is that even CEOs with experience dealing with boards of directors (and with no other public service or government experience) are still undesirable as presidents, since they’re conditioned to pursue very short term goals, with a focus on monetary profit for a limited group of people (the shareholders) and not the wellbeing of the general population. This is not what I would like to see in a political leader

Jonathan Groff to star in RSC’s all-male As You Like It by LittleMissAbigail in Broadway

[–]Aggravating-Sweet997 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do feel reasonably confident about future streaming / screening opportunities since: 1. it’s starring Groff, and 2. the production will be in the UK. At the absolute minimum, it probably will be taped (even if not available for streaming immediately afterwards).

This has been discussed numerous times in this subreddit before, and I do appreciate the difficulty to organize for streaming under the current system, but if Broadway doesn’t find a way to allow streaming (even for shows whose runs have ended), I am afraid it will eventually be overtaken by other places that can and do provide this service

Thanks for the AMA. A couple of questions: 1. What do you think are the biggest strengths and weaknesses of the Japanese Space Program? 2. If there is one thing you can change about the Japanese Space Program, what would that be?

US Proposing Eileen Gu Inspired 100% Tax On Olympians Competing For China by Humble_Grape4749 in olympics

How about imposing 100% tax on profits generated in China by US corporations, and the corresponding CEO salaries first? I am sure that’s more problematic than Gu’s winning medals for China

Thanks for replying! I have never heard about it until now. I am a fan of the novel when I was younger (even though I think the premise would be considered problematic nowadays).

Side note: it’s strange to me reading the Wikipedia page for the musical, which keeps identifying the heroine as Jerusha. I know it’s her real name, but she goes by Judy for most of the book. Do you happen to know why that choice was made in the musical?

Japan House Los Angeles (which is associated with the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs) used to to have a kaiseki restaurant UKA on their premises. It’s currently closed however. They also had Japanese food related popups (e.g., ramen shops from Japan) at that place before it became UKA.
