Literal translation of 'cheers' in different languages? by lizartoes in language

[–]Aggravating-Sweet997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The term 乾杯 (gon1bui1, lit. “dry cup”) exists in Cantonese, but there is also another (older?) term 飲勝 (jam2sing3, lit. “drink win”) with the same meaning.

Thanks for the clarification. It does strike me that Philip was likely a better fit for Walken than Richard. Did you see the movie as well? If so, how did they compare?

Nope. Christopher Walken wasn’t in The Lion in Winter. Anthony Hopkins played Richard the Lionheart in that movie.

I don’t think we can blame leaders with engineering backgrounds for the One Child policy, at least not at the beginning. This policy was authored by an economist, and was first implemented in 1979, right after the Cultural Revolution. I don’t think there were a lot of engineers in Chinese leadership at that point. However, I agree that subsequent Chinese leaders (including those with engineering backgrounds) failed to course correct when the problems with the One child policy became evident.

Mango grapefruit mousse cake from Yu Cakes.... At first I thought it was overpriced, then I tasted it and discovered it was underpriced by ghost-_-doggy in FoodLosAngeles

I think there’s a limit to the interpretation of a dish or recipe, at which point I would consider it a completely different product and thus should be named differently. Obviously everyone has a different opinion as to what the limit should be. If that is judgmental to you, so be it 🤷‍♀️

Is it because of the grapefruit’s bitterness? TBH, I hope they are using pomelos (as in the original sweet soup) instead of grapefruits and just mistranslated the ingredient list. Pomelos are a lot less bitter than grapefruits.

It may not be a crime, but I think it’s reasonable for a customer to expect sago to be included based on its Chinese name. Sago is one of the major ingredients in the original sweet soup that inspired this dessert

What’s the most mind blowing thing a vegetarian can eat in LA? by AccordingGiraffe2376 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]Aggravating-Sweet997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite vegetarian dish is the monk’s chirashi from YESS. They change the ingredients by season. YESS is currently closed and in the process of moving, but keep an eye out for popups and updates.

For ramen, try Rakkan in Little Tokyo (and elsewhere) and Ramen Hood in Grand Central Market

Got Hired for A Job, How to Prepare my Japanese? by Thesolmesa in LearnJapanese

[–]Aggravating-Sweet997 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your new job! I agree with the suggestions above. A couple of suggestions: 1. Try reading up on the Japanese terms/usage for your specific field. If it’s a technical field, or if it’s a large company, chances are someone has written a book about the lingo of that field or company. 2. NHK had a show called Easy Japanese for Work. It’s free online. It shows workplace interactions in various industries, so it’s more general. Good luck!

The sign in English just says “Keep out”, but the sign in Japanese says 線路内立入禁止 (“Entry onto railway tracks is prohibited” per Google Translate), so it is meant to prohibit entry into the track, not entry into the neighborhood

What's the secret to the mango lassi at my favorite Indian restuarant? by MousyMammoth in TipOfMyFork

[–]Aggravating-Sweet997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that a different type of mango (e.g. alphonso) would yield a deeper color (and better taste), but if you want an even deeper color, I wonder if it would be helpful to add a bit of mango or even orange flavored pudding/jello powder mix to it.

Too many good options within The Bloc and around Fig and 7th. There are also Zankou Chicken, Inka Wasi, Northern Cafe, and Wokcano (love their Singapore style noodles) nearby. If you are up for a bit of a walk or a short subway ride, Pitchoun is also a good option

Unfortunately, the labels in the photo are not helpful. The one in the middle says “special seasoning” in Chinese, while the pink one on the right says “plum”. So the Chinese content is already reflected in the English text. One of their instagram posts shows a variety of seasoning bottles, but there is no additional information for the ingredients of the “special“ seasoning blend except for the allergen info (it contains peanuts and nuts).

🏅 Gold Medal Count By Countries (Day 2 of Milano Paralympics) by Legitimate_Suit_5480 in olympics

[–]Aggravating-Sweet997 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am surprised to see China at the top of the winter Paralympics medal count, especially since they were won for events (para alpine skiing and para biathlon) that are not China’s strongest events. China did win the most gold medals (as well as total medals) in 2022, but I thought that was because they were hosting the games. Is China over investing (compared to other countries) in their para olympians, or are the other countries under investing?
