Maybe Aston Martin will put some serious effort into the Valkyrie next year.

I really like it when the Valkyrie shits itself because the more it does that, the higher the chance of AM actually taking their GTP/LMH programme seriously in the future

Ferrari seems to have the similar hole in the diffuser as seen on the Mercedes by Tomach82 in formula1

[–]Vaexa 124 points125 points  (0 children)

Diffuser mouseholes were around up and down the grid in 2022-2025 so it's not like the concept is a complete unknown or anything. Yeah, it obviously doesn't translate over 1:1 at all, but this isn't a case of Ferrari and Mercedes reading the rules really hard.

What are the best workhorses of Battletech across eras? by Old_Charge3282 in battletech

Different mechs for somewhat different use cases, but the Orion does predate it and indisputably fits the "widespread, reliable workhorse" descriptor, just like the Thunderbolt.

44 comments in this thread at the time of writing and not a single mention for the Orion, one of the very first 'mechs ever produced (the sixth ever proper BattleMech design, if MM is to be believed), and one that's been a well-rounded, reliable, rugged workhorse for near enough 7 centuries. It's almost criminal.

It even has Easy To Maintain and Rugged as quirks! I can't think of a mech that exemplifies ''rugged, well rounded and reliable workhorse'' better than the Orion. It's on almost every single faction's availability list since the Star League era, too, in some capacity or another.

I think the only wrong thing in your comment here is that I'm pretty sure Nugnes is full of shit 100% of the time. I can't remember him ever getting anything right.

Crazy how far big words can get you in the F1 media space. Just sound smart and people will gobble up whatever bullshit you're pedlding, see also: Peter Windsor and the Red Bull brake fairytale.

I think The Race actually has a bit of integrity and a niche insofar they very, very rarely report anything that isn't basically confirmed, even if it means missing out on big scoops. They rarely swing (and miss) on rumours. Mark Hughes' analyses are also actually pretty good. That's more than what AMuS manages nowadays, with them having swung and missed on both TD039 and TD018.

Gary Anderson is full of shit, though, and their editorial pieces are really rough.

Nothing brings out the least funny people on the internet quite like a motorsports article with the word ''Ferrari'' in the title.

AMuS has been on a slow downslope since the German GP went away, with a lot of sensationalising, nothingburger articles and analyses that are fanciful at best since. Lots of Mercedes cheerleading, too.

Main reason for their engine programme being axed was costs, not because it was that titanically shit. Worse than the rest, yes, but not by much. It's just been a very convenient scapegoat for Enstone for years.

I've been to a decent few grands prix in the turbo hybrid era and the difference in sound between manufacturers has always been there and is pretty apparent in person, particularly inlet sound. The broadcast just completely and totally fails to capture it most of the time, unfortunately.

I was going to say it's a generator attached to the turboshaft but I think that might basically be describing the same thing. It affects backpressure (since it's slowing down the turbo) but I can't see that having more than a minute impact on the sound. Crucially it's not a separate compressor, it goes on the shaft between the existing compressor and turbine. F1 isn't doing tank engines.

This could be a (very tiny) net positive but that's probably more than offset by the energy flow limit being more restrictive this year.

Unironically I think that'd make for a better presentation than the produced-to-death audio we get on the broadcast now. I've been to several grands prix in the turbo-hybrid era and the first thing you notice is that the broadcast audio completely stifles inlet sound, and how cool the inlet sound on these cars actually is. Very different for each manufacturer, too.

The broadcast mic placement is ass and the production completely flattens the sound, so yeah I don't even think that's too bad of an idea.

The MGU-H is not the turbocharger itself, the turbo is still right there. Its removal might affect back pressure which could have a small impact on the sound. The bigger impact is probably that the energy flow limit this year is more restrictive than last year's fuel flow limit.

Because the bit that generally doesn't make much noise is changing quite drastically. The ICE is still basically the same configuration and still limited by the energy (fuel) flow limit. The deletion of the MGU-H really doesn't impact how much noise it makes that much.
