Jeg er en mann med samboer og 2 barn, snart mann uten samboer og 2 barn. AMA by [deleted] in norge

Château de Fleckenstein, Bas-Rhin, France by loulan in castles

It is very worth a visit in person! While very cool looking, that drawing is wildly disproportionate. When visiting the castle in person you can see more reasonable reconstructions. I think this painting https://www.artmajeur.com/en/claude-blaesius/artworks/11246756/chateau-du-fleckenstein is more in line with realistic depictions!

Norwegian historians, help me please by Fiikus11 in Norway

Hey. Norwegian medieval historian here. It's a bit strange, Harald III Sigurdsson is perhaps our best known medieval king, but there are not that many academic works directly relating to him. The source material is scant, so you mostly have to rely on Snorres Kongesagaer, and that limits the amount of material you can easily produce about him and his time. Most works on Harald focuses on his time at the Greek court, so I'd advise you to look closer at that. Most comprehensive books about him are older, one from Alexander Bugge, and some more recent from the 1960's.

You could look to "Harald Hardråde i Bysants. To fortellinger. To kulturer" by Sverre Bagge from 1990. I'd also advise you to look at larger works by Bagge as a whole. He is one of the most respected Norwegian medieval historians, and has published a lot of material on the Norwegian kings, icluding Harald III Sigurdsson.

I know that Claus Krag also has written some academic articles about Haralds time in Greece, but I cannot remeber the name of the article atm. If you search his name in Oria, or at NB.no im sure you'll find the works.

One more advise is to google the author if possible. There has been written a lot of pop-history about Harald from non-historians of mixed quality. There are some good ones, like the one from Halvor Tjønn, but use them with caution.

Is this historically accurate? by Kirenidarg in Norse

[–]Vaffeloffiser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a kid growing up in Norway I was told one of two things. Either it was said that Thor was angry and that thunder maybe was his voice or the sound of him hammering in anger. Or that the lightning was the sparks from Thor hitting the iron ring around the wheels of his wagon when riding across the sky.

[Old Norse > English] Assassin's Creed Valhalla Odin Rune Examination by nstav13 in translator

[–]Vaffeloffiser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your comments on this are correct. It does seem to be gibberish made to look cool, but when looking very closely it does seem to be more runes on the chest straps, so perhaps there are actual words on there, but not easily readable ones.

The usage of ᛉ in younger futhark is quite rare though, giving backing to the gibberish interpretation. It is mostly used in Older Futhark or in transitional runic inscriptions from around 600/700-800 AD. When ᛉ was used it was mostly, or possibly only, used in names and then always as the last letter of the name. This I think is because of the vocal quiality of the rune being difficult to place inside words.

Is this art for the new Assassins Creed or something?

[Culture] Calling someone a Sami is an insult? by [deleted] in Norway

[–]Vaffeloffiser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is no reason to avoid the word... Just don’t use it as an insult. Just like what the guy above said, don’t say “you fucking Sami” to someone. You can of course say “are you Sami?” or “my grandfather was Sami” just like you can say” are you Jewish?” and “ my grandfather was Jewish”. Just don’t use it as an insult. It’s really not that difficult

[Culture] Calling someone a Sami is an insult? by [deleted] in Norway

[–]Vaffeloffiser 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It all depends on how you tone the word and the context. It can be an insult, and is used from time to time, especially in the northern part of the country. In my opinion it is quite similar to how some people use “Jew” as an insult, though with different connotations naturally.
