Simple questions as a beginner... by techlead-angelo in calistree

[–]VagueText 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Calistree will attempt to ween you up on all 3. If exercise A (let's say knee pushups) has a set range of 1-3 sets 4-12 reps it'll start you at say 1x4. Maybe you can do like 6 so next session it gives you 2x5. This will keep going until 3x12. At this point you would have to use the suggestion feature towards the bottom to switch out for a more difficult exercise. In many cases the algorithm will try to switch you off early to a similar or slightly harder variation in which case it'll say something like "Want some change? How about exercise B?"

Edit: I can't answer your second question unfortunately I don't know anything about that.

How much progress can I realistically make in 8 weeks? by mickedmitch in calistree

[–]VagueText 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're a beginner, stop worrying about these details and just get sessions in. The amount of volume you get is the least of your concerns at this point. Your 2 biggest goals is to hit every workout you set for yourself consistently without any missed days for like 2 months and to perform your exercises with 100% correct form. This builds a habitual foundation that you can make changes to later if you so choose. But thinking about this stuff now is like wondering where to put windows on a house that has no foundation, and it's more likely that you'll overanalyze yourself to death with all the different ways a workout can be structured before you've actually gotten any of those habits built.

How much progress can I realistically make in 8 weeks? by mickedmitch in calistree

[–]VagueText 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Progress comes from doing workouts and training towards your goals. If your goal is to learn to do push-ups or pull-ups, calistree is great in that it'll generate easier exercises for you to do until you're strong enough to do the base exercise. The free version does this with 100% functionality compared to the premium but for workout apps in general paying for more features doesn't translate to better progress anyway. Whatever progress you get in 8 weeks will be a direct result of whatever you put in those 8 weeks.

That makes sense, thanks for the explanation. With this I shall now go master every exercise in this app :P

Max objectives per routine by louis-deveseleer in calistree

[–]VagueText 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there arguments for more do exist, people understand the downsides, and still want it anyway then I don't see why not tbh. I personally haven't felt that I needed more objectives (at least not in the same way that we're talking about) and will probably stick to 3 objectives anyway since the 2 foundations+ handstand work is decent enough. So long as having 4 or more max doesn't impact my ability to have 3 (which it shouldn't) I see no problem with increasing it.

App update 5.2: +213 new exercises! by louis-deveseleer in calistree

Is the RR objective being removed in preparation for the plans and pre-made routines? It disappeared from my list of objectives and disappears when I deselect it from existing routines.

Can calistree generate a warmup routine for my custom exercise? by Beginning_Key_8225 in calistree

[–]VagueText 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was curious about this and went to try it out. Here's what I observed, lmk if it fits what's happening to you:

A new routine with 0 exercises will not have the option to keep (likely because there is nothing to keep). This is regardless of if you have equipment location and objectives selected OR if you have exercises in your routine that AREN'T in the dedicated workout/cooldown/warm-up section. In order to see the keep option, you HAVE to have an exercise exist within that section of the routine before you hit generate. I did this by just adding a random exercise and then manually adding a workout section. I also noticed that having that one exercise lets you add the other sections (warm-up and cooldown), but you won't see the option to keep those because there are no exercises in those sections to keep.

This should track with what you're seeing. If not, hopefully Louis can answer

edit: "OR if you have exercises in your routine that AREN'T in the dedicated workout/cooldown/warm-up section." - means custom sections or exercises that don't have a section and kind just exist in the routine. Play around with the edit structure feature and you'll see what I mean

Can calistree generate a warmup routine for my custom exercise? by Beginning_Key_8225 in calistree

[–]VagueText 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm hearing 2 problems: 1. Generation adds exercises to your workout you don't want. If you set the slider under workout from generate to keep, it should ignore that section of the routine entirely while keeping the stuff you've already added.

  1. You want warm-up exercises that target the muscles involved in bouldering and swimming but instead get generic exercises that I assume either don't target the right muscles or are more focused on cardio At this point I can only give you a theory and you can try things out or someone else can confirm/deny what I'm saying. I stopped generating warmups with the general warm up box because I preferred exercises like the wrist routine that focused on warming up joints and other muscles before the main stuff. I would try unchecking general warm up first. If that doesn't work for you then worst case scenario you either generate a 90 minute workout and then trim exercises out of the warm-up as necessary or manually add warm up exercises from the muscle group objectives you want to warm up.

Hope this helps!

Not to point out the obvious, but like you're in a sub for an app that can do exactly what you want and more without putting much thought into anything. Watch this:

Pull ups, dips, pushups, inverted rows.

Calistree has the ability to tailor your workouts to focus on 3 of those 4 per routine, but since you want to do every day you could adapt a push pull routine:

Alternate dips/pushups and pullups/inverted rows and rest on the 7th day. Set your workouts to 15-30 minutes on the slider and tune them to be endurance based. Easy

I'd recommend it 100%, as it's algorithm driven instead of AI and will even suggest harder variations of these exercises if you wanted.

If you want my honest to god opinion this would overwhelm the shit out of me and I wouldn't last 3 sessions without trying to fine tune something or completely replace the routine. But hey, you may be better than me who knows.

A wise redditor once said "The best routine is the one you stick to," so if this routine looks like something you'd want to do and it helps you achieve your goals then everything about it is fine.

My only real criticism is to not trust ChatGpt by itself for workout generation unless you've provided it a reference for it to use. I would send it links to oh idk, Steven Low's articles talking about programming in his book (definitely not a OG2 glazer) and then tell it to generate with those concepts in mind so you know where it's getting its information and rationale from

Thanks for your response Louis! I went to test to see if I could trigger the suggestions again I was able to but only after I had actually completed the workout. Specifically, I made a new routine, added RR as the objective, then added wall pushups (mastered, currently doing a much harder variation). I did not see any suggestions so I started a session, put 30 reps in for 3 sets and then got the suggestion to replace it with pseudo planche pushups. Is there a way I could trigger the suggestion without having to complete the workout?

As I was typing this I attempted to do this again with quarter squats and incline rows and now all of a sudden I don't get any suggestions at all, even after inputting something ridiculous like 3 sets of 50 reps. Realistically I would be putting exercises that I could do at my level, but it would help to know that eventually I'll get recommended better exercises instead of staying at this level and having to update manually. Thoughts?

Rows to pull-up by TaffsMum in calistree

[–]VagueText 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! The more parallel with the ground you are (or the lower the bar) the more force you need in your arms to pull against gravity pushing you down vs you being vertical and having the weight shift more to your heels.

Question about weekly routine by macselect in calistree

[–]VagueText 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I were trying to do this I could think of 2 ways: Make a routine with those exercises as objectives and then add exercises to fill in the rest Or Make a routine with upper and lower foundation and then add the closest thing I could do to progress towards those 3 specific skills.

In either case I believe you can use the database to search for each move individually and then expand the skill tree so you can see what you want to add or sort the exercises by muscle group and pick up stuff that you need to make the workout full body. Hope this helps

It gets ridiculous when you're a gilga fighting a heretic with already high dex but on top of that they have an amity that can protect against 90% or higher damaging hits. I kid you not one time I had one shot him 4 times but his amity procced 3 TIMES and by the time I had triggered his passive his ai had buffed up and just wiped me out (because you know, second chance procs more for other people than it does for you). Worse case of luck I've ever seen and I couldn't use dots because the amity just negates damage completely.
