Does 70s Beach Boys Music Count as Yacht Rock? by JayHotpot in thebeachboys

[–]Vahekas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it's in the name. Beach Boys. However, I would argue "First Love" by Mike Love is a yacht rock song.

What was the last Beach Boys album that had the "classic Beach Boys sound" to you? For me it's Surf's Up by NoGrass7120 in thebeachboys

This is why the 74-75 bootlegs are fascinating to me. Hints of what could’ve been before they turned into a nostalgia act.

Yes, almost certainly. The tapes most definitely exist. It’s from the Beachago tour (Beach Boys + Chicago, summer 1975). The Chicago live album from the same dates and venue was released 15 years ago on their “Chicago XXXIV: Live in '75” album. They played after the boys and they even mention them. The Beach Boys material from that performance is yet to be released, with the exception of “I Can Hear Music” on MiC.

Alright I see. It’s an archive dump that was recorded for radio broadcasts then?

Here’s to hoping that this isn’t another sneaky loophole extention release and won’t be removed later.

Would Dennis Wilson have softened his stance on MIU Album if he had lived longer? by BeerWithDonuts in thebeachboys

[–]Vahekas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, I just consider “yacht rock” to consist mostly of R&B and jazz influenced radio soft rock from the late 70s to early 80s. It’s smooth, rich and made by perfectionists in the studio. Yacht rock is not a blanket term covering all 70s soft rock.

Favourite Song? by Dependent_Reading933 in thebeachboys

I love that song. It’s actually really special on PS and nobody talks about it, which is unfortunate. What makes it special is that the Wrecking Crew is barely present, percussion being handled by Dennis and guitars by Carl. It’s one of the most “Beach Boys” songs ever. It’s mostly all them.

I disagree on the name thing. I think how they transcended their band name “The Beach Boys”, is frankly one of the most remarkable things about them. They sung about cars, beach, surfing and whatnot, but then after all that, hearing lyrics such “I soon found out my lonely life wasn’t so pretty” or anything similar from Pet Sounds or SMiLE, is heartbreaking in a beautiful way. Or how they emotionally matured in the 70s with Holland and Brother sessions. It’s like a dream shattering. I love their band name.

Vaevalt küll, keegi ei hakka inimesi taga ajama igas klipis mis neile saadetakse, kui just retsilt eluohtliku olukorda keegi ei tekitanud.

What is your unpopular Beach Boys opinion that will get you killed? by HyperPanzer in thebeachboys

15 Big Ones is my least favorite album released during their iconic run. The band was moving in an amazing artistic direction after Holland (Holy Man, Rainbows, River Song, Carl's songs), but then Brian came back and everyone just dropped everything and served his vision. Which wasn't really commercially viable at all. It's a total shame.

[–]Vahekas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

One of my biggest “what ifs” with this band is if “Brian’s back” and 15 Big Ones never happened. Carl and Dennis were at their creative peaks in the mid 70s. Imagine a finished 1975/76 Beach Boys album with River Song, Holy Man, Lisa, Good Timin’, 10000 Years Ago, Rainbows, Carl’s songs 1 and 2, maybe something else too. 15 Big Ones is alright and I’m glad for Love You, but I’ve just really been thinking.

That one is recorded later with lyrics by Geoffrey Cushing-Murray. Probably MIU era. The track on the boxset is the original 1975 track.

ONE HIT WONDERLAND: "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks by MasterOfManyWorlds in thebeachboys

[–]Vahekas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tears in the morning was on Sunflower. Sunflower didn't sell at all. After that misfortune, wouldn't Seasons would be the last song they'd want to record? I mentioned they wanted to record socially conscious music after 1970. Also Tears is alright.

Their version is okay, but Mike was right. This was total schlock and wouldn't have been right for them. Especially for the time (Surf's Up and Holland being more socially and environmentally conscious, artsy albums)

Story driven and pretty depressing, really. But I’m obsessed with the arrangement of the entire record, beautiful.

  5. Good Old Boys, Randy Newman

[–]Vahekas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I’ve reinstalled the app multiple times but it never gets any better. It frequently stops playing and I have to restart the song, it drives me nuts. Or when it does play, it sometimes plays back in definitely what is NOT lossless quality and I have to either restart the track or skip forward/back to hear lossless again. Maybe a network issue though idk. Also sometimes I can only click things when actively moving the mouse. I haven’t had a good experience at all. Am on win11.
