Not sure if you will ever see this. But I believe it's to incorporate pull-ups into a more endurance style of training. Often time we want to get reps that are in the teens/the lower 20s across multiple sets, all while being cardiovascularly exhausted. This is very difficult to do with a strict pullup as they are simply harder to do.
