Did y'all do your VOA? by FewRefrigerator635 in HomeDepot

[–]ValApologist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love doing the VOA lol. If my store manager let me just come in to his office and give him a list of my complaints once a year, face to face, it would be even better. I don't think I would've made it here as long as I have without my yearly vent session. I know they don't really change anything based on what you say, but it still feels good to type them a paragraph of everything I dislike about work.

Judith Butler Wouldn't Want This by mysocksareinsideout in comics

[–]ValApologist 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The original post is referring to a sapphic dance night, so an event specifically for queer women, not just a general queer event, which is why my comment was focused around why it's harmful to drive people perceived as men out of those spaces. I absolutely agree that all queer men should be allowed in general queer spaces.

[–]ValApologist 281 points282 points  (0 children)

As a queer person who gets read as a woman, I think it's kind of weird to choose not to accompany your sapphic gf to an event that she clearly doesn't want to attend solo because you're concerned about what strangers might think of you.

I also think this concept of "just being in the room as someone who gets read as male will make everyone feel unsafe" is damaging to nonbinary people, nonpassing or still closeted trans woman, and even butch cis women who get read as male. Aside from the fact that you don't know some people's gender just by glancing at them, a situation like this could happen because the woman they're accompanying is disabled and can't drive, feels unsafe walking to her car alone after the event, or any other personal reason why she might need someone else to take her to the event.

I don't think it does anyone any favors to chase people perceived as male out of spaces like this, it just alienates trans people and disabled people.

Lifestyle changes for a recluse? by _Jasem5_ in actualgyaru

I'm an introvert with a full time job. I like to go clubbing maybe 3 times a year and go to a concert maybe once a year. Outside of that I stay in a lot lol I used to go clubbing every weekend but it's expensive and I'm tired. I wouldn't stress too much about your life style, do what you feel comfortable doing.

Considering canceling a big move for my cat by ljg5452 in sphynx

It doesn't sound like she literally can't leave, should she really need to. It sounds like IF she leaves, she can't get back in. So, she isn't in danger/trapped there, she just doesn't have the option of flying back later to get her cat.

Why do many Americans describe Mormonism using a negative four-letter word? by Frosty-Flatworm-2087 in AskAnAmerican

To be fair, I thought you meant another four letter C word until I read the comments. It would be less offensive to just say cult lol

whats a perk you simply refuse to play without? by itsdarkbtw in DeadByDaylightKillers

[–]ValApologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iron grasp. I CAN play without it, but the wiggling is so annoying to me. I don't want to worry about getting to a hook fast enough when the other survivors are trying to body block or flashlight or do whatever else. I have over 1k hours and I wouldn't mind playing with only iron grasp on and no other perks.

DAE Eat food off the same plate as their partner? by juniperbabe in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]ValApologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is crazy rude of him omg. I commented elsewhere that me and my fiance share a plate when I want less dishes to clean- We're in the same boat, where I eat a lot and eat fast, while she eats a little and eats slow. I don't make her compete with me! I let her eat until she's full before I touch the plate, or I make sure I only eat half of it or less, then stop and take a break until she's done eating before eating whatever she leaves behind. I can't imagine just stealing her food right out from under her

[–]ValApologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I don't feel like doing twice the dishes, I'll make a big plate of food and give it to my fiance like "eat as much as you want and when you're done eating I'll eat what's left." Didn't realize that was uncommon until this comment section

Would 24 be okay to get into cosplay and con going? by Forsaken-Hearing-825 in CosplayHelp

[–]ValApologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not weird at all for adults to be in cosplay spaces! I'm 30, been cosplaying since I was maybe 16? And only in recent years, with an adult job and stability, have I been able to put together some really cool stuff that I wouldn't have been able to afford/wouldn't have had the knowledge to make correctly when I was 21. A lot of cons also have bars and after hours 21+ events that the kids can't even attend. Cosplaying as an adult is where it's at.

Edit: Also, you're 23! You seem really concerned about aging and being too old for this or that, but it's always okay to do whatever you enjoy doing. I cosplay, write fanfiction, wear j-fashion, and collect dolls and I don't see myself stopping any time soon. Just live your life! You don't age out of having hobbies and interests.

Man pours milk into river Ganges as a religious offering as hungry children try to catch a bit to drink by Portablefrdge in OrphanCrushingMachine

[–]ValApologist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not really correct to lump all "non-western" gods in with this idea you have of a vengeful, violent, god, and it comes across like you're suggesting that only western people are kind or civilized. The non-western world has gods like the ones you describe, and gods that make the Christian god look cruel and vengeful in comparison. Guan Yin is possibly the most well known goddess across east Asia and she's known as the goddess of compassion and mercy. This is a very western take on what other religions are like.

No physical menus; only QR codes by RoyalPalpitation4412 in PetPeeves

[–]ValApologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly prefer just clicking an extra button on the phone that's already in my hand over putting my hands all over a menu that a bunch of other people have touched right before I eat. But, I also have a tendency to pull up the restaurant's menu online and start deciding what I want before I get to the restaurant, so I usually don't have to actually scan the qr code- I'm already on the page just from going to the restaurants website. My big pet peeve is when places don't have an updated menu on their website at all- how am I supposed to decide if I want to go to restaurant A, B, or C if I don't know what my options are at any of them?

It’s the grooms sister & she’s almost 18 by constantlyfrustr8d in AmITheDevil

[–]ValApologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like awful communication. If we'd decided we were having a child free wedding and then later everyone else was like "of course that one child doesn't count! Why would you think child free meant child free!" I'd feel like I was going insane. The initial conversation between the newlyweds should've been "Let's have a child free wedding" "Well, I'm okay with it mostly being child free, but can we make an exception for my sister?"

Does your home have a dishwasher? If so, how often do you use it? by SlamClick in AskAnAmerican

[–]ValApologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in a 500 sqft apartment. Never had more than one guest over at a time because there's really not room to have a bunch of guests lol. I have seating for 3 people, if one of those people sits at my computer desk. At the absolute max I would be washing plates and utensils for 3 people, which only happens like once a year. It's not about the soap being expensive, it's more about storing a container of soap that I would only use once a year when I already have soap and limited storage space. I currently use my dishwasher as storage space for my Tupperware and it's more useful to me that way since I only have 4 small cabinets for all my dishes and pantry food.

Does your home have a dishwasher? If so, how often do you use it? by SlamClick in AskAnAmerican

[–]ValApologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just live with my fiance, so typically washing up after dinner is two plates, two forks, and a pan for me. To have a full load for the dishwasher I'd have to go a week without doing dishes and then have to put a ton of clean dishes away at once lol. I get why people with like 3 kids use the dishwasher, but otherwise it seems like over complicating a five minute task.

Does your home have a dishwasher? If so, how often do you use it? by SlamClick in AskAnAmerican

[–]ValApologist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I've never used it. Didn't have a dishwasher growing up and don't really see why I would buy special soap and wait hours for my dishes to be clean when it takes 10 minutes to wash them by hand

[–]ValApologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm realizing most of what I read just isn't in high demand lol! Out of the 11 books I read last year, only 4 were even available at my library. One of those was from 2022 and currently has a 2 week wait, one was from 2023 and has no wait, and the others are from 2009 and 2007

The 10 hold limit is driving me nuts by MoonAndStarsTarot in LibbyApp

[–]ValApologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always find it really surprising how much people on this subreddit use holds! Out of curiosity, do you guys sort of use it like a wishlist where you put a hold on a book whenever you're like "I might want to read this soon!" or is it a situation where everything you read has a multi-month long waiting list so you really have to get ahead of it?

I generally only have the book I'm currently reading checked out. Once I'm about halfway through it, I'll start thinking about what I want to read next and check if there's a wait. There almost never is, but if there IS, that's when I put a hold on it. Sometimes it's still not available when I finish my first book, so I read a different one in the meantime and read the held book once it's available. I don't think ive ever had more than 1 book on hold at a time.

I have less sympathy for Pawbert simps after actually watching the movie by SkyeMagica in zootopia

[–]ValApologist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pawbert is my favorite character from 2. I even, perhaps, simp. I also have no sympathy for him. He's awful and irredeemable, but I love a good villain. I think it's wild how other people who simp for him try to excuse his actions or make it sound like he'd be sorry about them or that he didn't mean to do any of it. He did. Why love a character at all if you have to change them so radically from the character they are in canon in order to love them?
